by the way I know well over 300 standards by ear and don't need a book. I mean when you lift Bill Evans and learn the tunes directly from the composers versions, you really don't have to worry. You see that is why I am able to make the correct observations that I do. Please let me know if you need any help in learning jazz music I would be happy to help. Let me guess you are American right?
having a great ear is probably your most valuable tool as an improviser or a solo performer but in my opinion a well rounded musician is someone who can effectively communicate what they themselves are doing or what anyone else is doing using a language that most other musicians understand (in modern jazz that language is theoretical). learning 300 tunes by ear is impressive but who cares if you don't actually contribute anything to the style outside of blowing over standards?
Let me get this straight, you have to use effects at home. oh my god man can't you play in time with proper groove like Ed Bickert or Wes Montgomery. Come on stick to rock guys this is sad !!! There is'nt a shred of Chalie Parker or Bill Evans or anything that sounds like the language of jazz. it is just rock sorry guys !!
@JA22guitar ....if you don't know what you talking about, stay away, or get yourself a book and learn the basics and then come back to this discussion. Sorry man.
@JA22guitar - Mark, man - you are a good player - I just hope you realize it reflects poorly on yourself when you are so dissmissive of others in this art form......It may benefit you to start thinking about how "you don't care for this player" as opposed to the whole "if I don't like it, it is not jazz." grow up.
@TheAxis456 Mario jumps no more pipes. He got tired of fungi and the koopas. Now he's playing jazz, spiritual rest. He played with an old Luigi (Dave Holland).

the scales and the chords that go with them are the same thing...what the hell is he talking about.a lesson video tape is supose to be for people who don't know but like to learn...how would you makes sence of the modal chord progressions if you dont know the modes LOL..i always get pissed off when people of high rank talk bullshit.
@AtanasovPeter well if youre starting jazz you should know the basics of guitar, this isnt strating from scratch learning jazz, this is learning improvising, hes not being cocky and pretentious, hes preaching useful words to those who can understand, go take a music theory class, it helps
John is the best. He came to my school last year and was hilarious, outgoing, humble and outstanding to listen to. If you ever get the chance to attend one of his clinics or take a lesson with him do it!
i wish that five people and men could have kids, then i would go back in time and have wes montgomery joe pass john abercrombie george benson and pat metheny have kid and make that kid be me
Nice to see this up. I love this guy. Saw him with the Gateway Trio. It's wonderful to get more personal with these musical figures via things like this.
thanks for posting! John has some great ideas for playing outside the box. I only wish he had made the video a bit more pedagogical, with some exercises or practice concepts. Some of the ideas are rather complex although he presents them to be very intuitive. Still it's great to get into the head of a great player there are nuggets to be had!

Wow. I'll leave your playing alone. Let's just say you're a (barely) intermediate player and leave it at that. More importantly:
1) You're dissing a jazz legend, on the internet, which means it will last *forever*.
2) Maybe you're missing something that DeJohnette and Erskine hear in this guy.
3) Your attitude flies right in the face of what Abercrombie - and ever other serious master - cultivates, namely, transcending ego in one's playing.

@JA22guitar
the idea of "proper groove" or "correct bop/jazz rhythmic phrasing" in a style which is highly improvisational seems a bit ridiculous.

Excelent video, even if the theoretical or technical stuff is way over your head, theres lots of musical wisdom to get here.

He makes a mean face like a heavy metal player. Kinda like Ted Nugent after he got his hair caught in the thicket.
If it helps me play like that though, I'm gonna start practicing my best mean face
