Lolita looks way to mature in this version. The actresses starring in movies back then all looked 17 or 18 to begin with, and the men always looked older. There doesn't seem to be anything disturbing when you look at these 2 together. The 1997 version is way better and Swain is perfect in it!
@Hendrikdevuile Oh, no. It's from the book. This version was actually written in part by the book's original author. There are a lot of "little jokes" in the book.
I love the weird faces Quilty makes when Hum is asking about the bed situation. Also, I love how it's a "state police" convention. How . . . . . . ironic?
@Tordy1 I think the older version picked up on all the subtle humor and nuances in the book that made it so terribly clever. This is the version Nabokov himself was involved with. But it certainly does seem to lack the seriousness of the situation. The newer version picks up on the darker serious message of the text, but leaves out the humor. Each movie has its strengths and weaknesses.
I think this version has a better portrayl of how manipulative Humbert Humbert really is. The 1997 version makes him seem like such a tortured nice guy.
i must say that the Claire Quilty in this version was more enjoyable. the 1997 Quilty was just disgustingly hideous, and made it hard for me to imagine Lolita running off with him, when sexy Jeremy Irons was playing Humbert lol.

lol sounds like Quilty's saying "Mister Swain" ... isn't that the surname of the actress who played the 1997 Lolita?

@UESwifey
What? The actress, which played Lolita in the original, was even two years younger than Swain. And imo she also looks younger.
MightyJabroni 1 year ago
@UESwifey Climax = orgasm, an unfortunate name for a summer camp. I don't think it was in the book, just another little joke of Kubrick's I suppose.

well red me if you want, but the background- the music, the slightly funny atmosphere and everything makes it less riveting for me.
Gosh, each to his own, there's really no need for red flags.can you not live in a world where other people have an opinion different to you?

The "laaa, lalalala laaaa" background song is supposed to highlight the fact that Lolita is a gum-chewing, pink sweater-wearing teenager, that's all.

State police convention.
I love the look on Humbert's face.
He's so guilty. He wants to boink the hell out of Lolita LOL

There was more nudity in the 97 Lolita..
JoeChrisMorris 3 years ago
if i need nudity, i'll watch porn lol.
besides, that was a body double. dominique swain was too young to be having sex scenes with men at that time.

Ghastly movie
Why remake it? especially when Nabakov helped out on the original screenplay?
Poor Meg Ryan!

Actually, that was Melanie Griffith. Not Meg Ryan.
