  • ever notice how all bass singers are in christian bands?

  • Where did you get the recording of "Now is the time to worship" ? Nice arrangement of this classic with a lot more meat on it's bones... Love 4 part harmony

  • @BassoReichert You can actually find it on Itunes, I think. If not try napster or rhapsody. It is also featured on some Southern Gospel compilation CDs and Christian Country Music compilations.

  • @BassoReichert Forgot to add....I don't remember exactly where I got it because I made this 3 years ago (man, time flies!!!), but I spotted it on amazon.com. Just search "Oak Ridge Boys Come Now is the time" and it'll pop up. And I think it's for download from the site for like $1 or something.

  • Richard is the man who mad the Oaks, we all love you!!!!

  • I used to think that the ZZ Top lookin' dude was the one with the deep voice growing up. :-)

  • Richard Sterban does have quite the voice..My very first concert was to see the oakridge boys.many many years ago... . talkin about one of the deepest bass voices.that goes much lower than Richards..... is George Younce ... {God rest his soul}

Richard is such a hunkie dunkie... {I agree he is best looking with the clean cut hair.}. much too handsome for the long woolie booger hair don'ts

  • I love them all but I could listen to his voice all day

  • Richard can do it all. Just might be the perfect voice.

  • I think he is hot either way. I would just love to meet him.

  • @dollysbiggestfan1 I met all of them, except him! He was in the bus too long...

  • There's no comparison to any other bass singer I am aware of. This guy is the best.

  • He is a great bass to be sure, but why has he gone the greasy looking way? He was always sharply dressed and handsome. The sould patch and sloppy hair just detracts.

  • I feel the rumble in my soul... and it is GOOD! He is the inspiration behind my singing bass in school choirs and groups of friends.

  • Muito boa a música deles...Música gospel americana é muito linda.

  • The verbiose introduction of this video is hilarious. You made me laugh just now. Thanks. Thanks so much. I am going to download the video and use that part in videos letter to my family and friends. LOL. I hope you wont mind. It is funny, as entertaining as the singer you are showcasing.

  • Richard's always been the man! I've been an Oaks fan since I was a kid in the early 80s. Richard can crank out the low notes. The lowest note I've heard him hit was the F below C2. That's at the end of 'Trying to Love Two Women'. He hits it clearly which means that he can most likely sing lower. He regularly hits the A and G below C2 as well. The end of 'Family Reunion' is great too.

I do have to say I hate his new look. Go back to looking clean cut and short haired, Richard!

  • @guibox3 His lowest is actually in this video. It's the lowest e flat on the piano. You can tell he is pushing his voice to get down that low but it doesn't sound like vocal fry to me at all. I will also include the lowest e on the piano by Richard when I finish part 2 of this tribute to him. And u never know...he could cut his hair sometime lol!

  • @GamingDrummer89

Is it 'Working on a Building'? For some reason I never thought of checking how low that one was. I assumed it was around a G1. Wow! most Ebs I've heard basses hit are pretty soft. Can you imagine if he went a little easier on it? I bet he could hit it really nice.

  • @guibox3 I think he looks like he needs to.

  • The very definition of "A gift from God!"

    Wow.......

  • he stiil alive

  • I saw him and The Boys on Directv and he hasn't looked to have aged a bit. Nice tribute to a worthy artist.

  • O im so glad! i really liike to hear him sing lol!

  • He aint dead is he!?!? I hope not!

  • @christian7gal7 Oh no he's far from dead. I just wanted to give him a tribute since he's one of the front runners in bass singing today. He's still with the Oaks and he's alive and well (and appears to have at least a good 25-30 years left in him, too...hope I don't jynx him by saying that, lol!). And I've been planning since I made this video to do a part 2 (and maybe part 3) of this tribute, so I'm probably going to dedicate my next bass singer video to him (with mostly clips of him, too).

  • @GamingDrummer89 I don't know if I'd say 25-300 years. I just looked up his age because I just saw him and the OakRidge Boys in concert and found out he is 67!!! I know I was Stunned!

  • @dabeinman Well certainly not 300 (lol yeah I know that was just a typo). But I knew he was in his late 60s. You never know. He just might make it to his 90s. And that'd be awesome if he was still singing then!

  • @GamingDrummer89 Lol. Yea, that would be awesome. But what's even more awesome is that when I just saw them in concert they sang Mamas Table and he sang the whole thing low! The whole time he was on an Ab or G1!!!!!!! And then he did BOOM BOOM and got down to and F1! He can shake the ground that low.

  • He aint dead is he!?!? I hope not!

  • Great vid. What's good about Richard is that he so doesn't look like a profundo.

  • Lol that happens a lot...there was a previous lineup of the Palmetto State Quartet (when Aaron McCune was singing bass with them) where the biggest guy was on tenor and the smallest guy (Aaron) was on bass. And most people expect William Lee Golden to be the one singing the Oom-Papa-Mow-Mow part on Elvira as opposed to Richard.

  • @GamingDrummer89 George Younce was about 5' 8".........with cowboy boots!

  • Been a fan of these guys over 40years. Love their Gospel & country. Richard is one of the best Bass Sgers of all time. If you enjoy Bass Singers take a listen to a quartet I came across about a month ago. Lonesome Road / JerichoRoad The Rangers. These guys are really good & the Bass is awesome. From what I find out these guys have been around awhile, don't know how I missed them.I have been a fan of Gospel quartet over 40 years. Dad & 3 sons uncle plays piano.

  • All of the bass singers we talk about here and on other vids are good or they wouldn't be doing it for a living. JD, Richard, Tim and old school were doing it before the age of bass mikes, bass speakers, fancy soundboards, and all the other stuff to help deepen the voice. Those were true bass singers who could sing on a tenor's mike and vibrate nails outta the floor.

  • Yup! If you look here on youtube, user BamaMTA04 has a video with Tim Riley and the Southmen singing Rainbow of Love. If you watch part 2 of version 2, you'll hear that Tim's voice isn't only quite clear and crisp, but also is quite capable of rumbling an entire building! It's especially awesome to listen to with a subwoofer or with headphones that have good bass response!

  • where can i find the whole song of "come now is the time worship"?

  • JD was garbage. he had a deep voice but you can't understand him. the best is george younce

  • @danielloyd2 ..Your comment is garbage. It takes a lot of class to call the lowest bass singer of all time garbage...Specially with J.D. Being dead and all. What an imbecile.

  • @danielloyd2 Your a real piece of Garbage.

  • I think Elvis's favorite bass singer was JD Sumer of the Stamp's Quartet. The group traveled with Elvis for eleven years.

  • Richard was one of the ELVIS favorite Bass Singers!

  • Sorry you are wrong. Elvis's favorite Bass Singer was JD Sumner of the Stamp's Quartet who also traveled with Elvis for eleven years.

  • check out some of Elvis's videos, you will see Richard with the Stamps.

  • JD the best bass singer that ever was, is, and will be.

Having said that, Of the bass singers alive today, Sterban is one of the best. I would say in the top three with Tim Duncan and Tim Riley.

  • If you like JD, Richard, and Tim Riley, you might want to also check out my latest video...it's a bass singer montage.

  • I only agree because I'm not prejudiced...Related to the late, and GREAT J.D. Sumner!

  • From what I've heard, he's probably the greatest bass singer ever!!

  • I agree Richard is one of the best. however Tim Riley beats them all. Just listen to his video " Rainbow of Love" Part 2 and I'll bet you'll agree.

  • Yeah, I do have to agree that Tim Riley is the best bass singer alive (and one of the best ever, he's right next to JD Sumner)...however, Richard is a close second. He doesn't have the same resonance as Tim or JD, but he has the low range to match them, and he does have pretty good resonance despite JD and Tim having more.

  • Great job. Best bass singer alive! Thanks for the time and effort for this clip.

  • I'm confused Tribute???? Has Richard Passed away

  • Oh no definitely not. He's only in his 60's, he's still got a long way to go in life (hopefully). It's only a tribute because he's one of the best bass singers alive today.

  • Yes he is and he can do it Cleaner than eveyone too nice Tone! Thank's for the note

  • Sterban could never hold a candle to J.D.

  • I was 3 when my dad (a DJ) brought home an extra copy of Elvira on a 45 record from the radio station. That was my first time to here a DEEP BASS vocalist. I fell in love with deep bass. I'm a high school band director who ended up playing clarinet as a student. I switched to BASS clarinet in 11th grade. I play bass guitar, and I love the sound of tubas in a wind band. I'm a left handed piano player so I can give the bass a little extra "umf." Tim Riley is #1 but Richard Sterban is #2!

  • Ever heard of a bassoon or a contrabassoon? The latter, if given an extended lower range, can reach A0!

Even more interesting is the lowest instrument known...the octocontrabass clarinet...that plays down to a B-2 (8HZ!).

  • i disagree, george younce was and is king of basses!

  • He certainly has a God given talents... I love his deep voice and I from the onset when I first heard it.. btw I am lots older than 16.. you keep up that singing, maybe one day we will hear you on a record label..

  • I just wish he'd clean up. He's gone from one the the best looking guys in music to greasy and dirty looking. On the other hand - nothin' can match his voice!!

  • im only 15 1/2 and i can hit an Eb1and i can also hit a C1

  • When you do it in front of thousands for a living let us know.

I had a friend in high school that could do it as well but is a Pastor now.

It is not about the fame but about the ability

  • Well, I don't do it in front of thousands, but I'm 16, I can get almost as low as Mr. Sterban, and I sing bass with my church quartet in front of around 500-700 people, depending on the event. On an average Sunday it's around 200.

I love doing it, and I'm hoping we can go out into the world and preach God's word through music. Just like these 4 wonderful men are doing.

  • wow that increadible I am only 14 and I can hit an Eb1! but i can't hit subcounter C though wow good job dude!

  • If that's true, you are truly gifted - but please: post a vid of yourself singing that Eb1 og maybe even the C1,

  • Yea, Richard is my favorite bass singer of all time!! I love the oak ridge boys!! I've had the opportunity to see them three times, so i can't complain, and I'm 20 yrs old so even us young guys still love 'em too!!

  • Thanks and ditto to drfever63's comments. I actually was lucky enough to meet the ORB's and Richard at the NBC Cafeteria around 1980-82 or so when they were taping The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. I think I fell in love with Bass singing from then on. I have a pretty good low range and love to sing along and try to keep up with the "big boys".

  • Really? That's cool. I'd love to be able to meet them someday (besides in Heaven, that is, haha!).

I also love to try to sing along. Of course, the lowest I can ever get (unless it's in the morning) is a C2 (or a C#2 if I'm not warmed up). I'd wish I could get Sterban's Eb1, lol. :)

  • I can Naturally hit sum of his notes wit ease...i sing in a quartet.....hahahah....=]

  • This tribute was pretty cool! I enjoyed watching it. I've been a huge fan of the Oaks since the early '70's when I was a kid - & of course it was the bass voice that drew me. Richard has really good volume & rich tone at any note. Good work, GamingDrummer89!!!

BTW - until this vid, I never saw any pics of Richard with the longer hair & goatee. Different, but cool. With the right costume, he could pass as one of the 3 musketeers! lol

  • Richard is awesome!!!!!

  • I went to see them in concert tonight. Great concert. That was my second time seeing them in concert.

Richard is my favorite with Joe close behind. This guy looks great for an almost 67 year old and the guy looks great in person.

  • He's that old? He could pass for 40 in some of these pics!

  • yeah Steve, I had Richard on the mind. Yeah I heard Golden was back, I actually stopped listening to them when they did that crap to him, and I was sorry to read that Sanders committed suicide.

  • yeah it was great and a long time ago! Both times in Ohio. The first time was at the Ohio State Fair, with a friend Carla who was in love with Joe, the way I was in love with Richard. That was before Richard Sanders took over for Golden. Sanders was playing in the band back then, I think it was in the 80s. The 2nd time I saw them it was with a little known band named 'The Judds'. :D

  • You mean Steve Sanders, right? I think that was his name. And actually, Golden is back...I think it was on New Year's Eve 1995 or 1996 that he came back. Just pointing that out. :)

  • Glad I found this, have always loved Richard, only got to see them twice.

  • You've seen them live? That's cool. I hope to be able to one day as well (haven't had the privilege yet).

  • Hi Gamingdrummer89, thanks for doing the effort to do this tribute to Richard, great to see you passion for Christ. May God bless you.

  • Thanks, and same to you! :)

  • would you be able to send me the song "I know what lies ahead"?

  • Yup. Just send me a PM with your e-mail and I'll send it to you. Luckily, the file isn't in m4p format (it's in m4a). If it was in m4p, I wouldn't be able to send it to you. You might need to convert it into mp3 format, but you can do that with any m4a file.

  • Richard Sterban has always been one of my favorites. I think singing gospel shows off his voice even more than country because that music is designed to show off a great bass...and he is.

  • very very good!

  • Hey jowox, would you happen to know any of the notes I was unable to identify in this video?

  • I´ll see if I find the time!

  • Richard never fails to amaze me.....he IS the best. Great video!!

  • Thanks! :)

  • It looks like william goldman would sing low.

  • It's actually, Golden, not "Goldman", haha! Just pointing that out!

And yeah, he does look a lot like a guy who could be a very low bass singer.

  • Oh, I didn't know who he was, well I kind of did, I just knew his last name had gold in it.

  • No problem. I thought it was "Golding" until recently (*laughs*).

  • What a fantastic bassist. I was amzed when I first heard himwith Elvira. I could not believe someone that looks on the short side could sing so low. Very nice presentation with all the vrious clips and notes.

  • Thank you for the comment, man! :)
