I remember that Jolly Cholly had the BEST... and I mean the BEST!!! pizza ever! Does anyone know if that recipe has been preserved? I have a fantasy that somewhere in the area there is an anonymous pizza place that is still serving made from some secret Jolly Cholly's pizza recipe, and if so - I want to know where it is!!!
@luckiebean Lum's is now on route 114? sorry might be the wrong route but it's near the 99 restaurant in seekonk.....just up the street on the same side towards Providence...hope they are the same good roast beef sandwiches.
I worked maintenance here in 1976 - something was always going on. Lots of fond memories, the food, the atmosphere the size and quaintness of it all. JC's, the North Bowl, the Boro & Plainville drive-ins, Bobby's Rollaway, A&W root beer in Attleboro with the car hops, Tex Barry's and Freits on Rt. 1 in Plainville and CB radios - who could possibly need any more while growing up. Oh yeah, forgot the motorheads at Friendly's parking lot...
Wow! I was born in 1957, and grew up in Norfolk , not far from Attleboro. Going to Jolly cholly's was a huge treat when my sister and I were kids in the 60's Thanks for the great memories!!!!
Ive never seen this place and i was born after it had already closed. The rusted arrow sign still stands and i hear the reason the sign is still there is because when u leave a trademark from something back then, property value is much higher. You let it sit and the longer it sits, the more its worth.
I wished i could of have seen this place, Thanks for posting this, its cool to see this park that rte 1 used to be a lane road each way, lol
Wow thanks for posting this. I was born in 87' when jolly chollys was clearly a distant memory. Ive always seen the rusted sign .. makes me smile to see the town as it was when my mom was a little girl.
North Attleboro was the best place I could have grown up in during the 70's and 80's. I hear it is much different now. I haven't been there since 1992. Not sure if I ever want to go back. The woods where I hung out near Falls Pond have houses now. They took two of my friend's houses to build that huge mall in S Attleboro. Just not the same.
Thanks so much for posting this. We had quite a debate about theproper spelling of Cholly's. My first job was at the BB booth at Lincoln Park in 1972. Remenber Crescent Park in Riverside?
I was born in '75 but my family ran most of the food stands and some of the games and rides at Crescent Park. Remember McCusker's? That was us. My Great Uncle Fred co-managed Crescent Park from 1950-1965 but our family was there in some way from the early 1900's till it's end. My father grew up in the house once owned by the original owner of the park.
Thanks for posting this. One of the only memories of my grandfather is from this boat ride. I was three and he grabbed me before I hit the water. He died shortly after this trip from northern Maine to visit him.
wow the sign is still up for this place and it is all rusted. too bad it was wrecked and replaced by a empty space. It was a good place for kids to go.
awesome video! I live in N.Attleboro but nver had the Jolly Cholly experience. It was long gone in 79' when I moved here. Any one remember Lincoln Park?
Wow that was kinda spooky for me A place I haven't thought about in 30 years suddenly appears and in the same period as my, quickly returning memories. The same clothing, (bought at ann&hope. which was mismanaged to death but it was the mold Sam Walton used to create Wal-mart) same rides.
My Father use to take us there all the time when we were kids. I was there with my two brothers playing miniture golf when it came over the radio that Elvis had died. I actually have a t-shirt that says Jolly Cholly's on it!!! I get such a reaction from people when they see me wearing it. Thank-you for posting. I sent the link to my Dad, and he reminded me that him and my mother had met there. North Attleboro WAS a great place to have grown up in.
I recall being a little kid sitting in a small enclosed ferris wheel in this park on a COLD day, teeth chattering, think I had to cry to get my parents to let me ride. Don't know what we were doing there from Shrewsbury, must have been a family trip ... perhaps we went to Ann and Hope department store? Wasn't that around here? At any rate, thanks for the memories!
Ann & Hope is in Cumberland RI. The building/shop is still there, but A&H is just a garden center now. Do you remember if this place had a coaster or not? I have found one picture of it, but no others or any mention. It looked to be a small kiddie coaster next to the train. Thanks...
Yes there was a coaster, a small kiddie one, but the train ran past it not next to it. it was next to the bumper cars after the coaster you would have to walk a bit to the end of the park to get on the Screamer. I STILL remember the place in VIVID detail. Spent the 60's ther as a kid. How I love that place!
Awesome, thanks for the info. As I said I have only seen one photo of it, and not much mention (wasn't on roller coaster database, but is now :)), so I wasn't sure.
If anyone is interested, from the photo, the coaster looks to be a Herschell Little Dipper. I was told that it runs the newer style trains, which started being used in 1960 (also the opening date for the ride). Does anyone know if it closed at the same time as the park?
Yep the whole park went down at the same time, about 1980-81 I think. SO sad, Not only was the park great in it's day, but across the parking lot you could get excellent Pizza, clams and fries. Behind the food joints was the minature golf course and a an asskicking playground. DAMN I miss that place.
We moved to Foxboro in 1974,by then Jolly Chollys was still in operation but half of it was gone. The famous sign and closed sight remained for years. Is it condos now? What a piece of history from my childhood memories! Thanks for the video!!
What great memories. I grew up in South Attleboro. Things sure were a lot simpler back then. On the way home we always stopped at Howard Johnsons for a clam roll or The Clam Shack on Kelly Boulevard for fried clams. Does anyone remember a place called Cowboy Town? It was farther up Route 1 headed north towards Foxboro.
This video is great. Thank you so much for sharing it. I drive by the empty lot daily. Too bad the park isn't still there. All that's left is a few rusted pieces from the past. Thanks again.
OMG THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! I remember this place so well, The funny thing is that my father lived in the apartments that now sit in it back parking lot...
So there was an A&P across the street

I won a free round of Mini Golf one day when I was a kid. I lived only about a mile from there. It was in North Attleboro.
