First of all, this is 1960's cold war footage. A really bad mix of the Nuclear Cannon and Hydrogen bomb footage. The U.S. and Russia suspended all Nuclear testing in the 70's. Yes, these guns WERE real, Russia built them too. One is on display at the Smithsonian. As is the M-65 Nuclear Rifle. It's all a relic of the cold war. India and Pakistan and North Korea are the latest to test nukes, under ground. Worry about them.

Hydrogen bomb is a misnomer(the energetic neutrons produced by the fusion stage are generally used to fission depleted or natural uranium such that most of the yield is still from fission).

@drummerDENY Twaddle. Fallout is the least dangerous aspect of nuclear weapons. There are two hazzards, accute radiation sickness and a barely noticable increase in cancer rates.

Fallout after 14 days is 1000 times less active than fallout after 1 hour, so radiation sickness is very much a short term problem(see 7-10 rule). A slow walk in a crosswind direction is enough to get out of the lethal areas, or if you stay, a covering of 3 feet of dirt is enough to provide a protection factor of 1000.

In a block of flats you can go into a central stairwell; far from ground, roof and outside walls. 1 foot of concrete has a PF of ~30; 2 feet a PF of ~1000.

In a house you can go down into the basement. Which has a lot of dirt between you and the ground and a lot of building between you and the roof.

Sit under a table with some buckets of drinking water and food stacked around it and you can easily double your PF.

Cancer mortality from all types of cancer among Hiroshima and Nagasaki survivors was a mere 7% higher than the cancer mortality in control groups.

Conventional bombs produce a far greater number of missing limbs, and other permanent disabilities.

In Vietnam the US was already walking a tightrope between being effective, not involving the USSR or China and trying to maintain support in the south.

The neutron bomb is probably the most usable nuclear weapon. It's a small thermonuclear device that is very good at taking out blast and heat resistant tank soviet tanks, if they ever invaded europe.

@StinkyTaco Nuclear weapons do not vaporize much else but themselves, let alone turn people to 'dust'. In Hiroshima and Nagasaki, thin clothes, even leaves and blades of grass protected almost completely from flash burn.

Modern warheads are about 10-20 times as big(it's more efficient to have many small warheads than a few big ones if you can aim properly), but the optimal burst altitude is also much higher, so it still doesn't vaporize anything.

actually, this cannon was a total success when talking about the power of the explosion, the explosion was something like 10 times bigger than they had calculated because of something they didn't anticipate, as this nuke was detonated way closer to the ground than any other before it, what happened was a formation of a second shock wave that due to the hot temperature of the ground (from the inicial blast), it created a higher overall dynamic pressure that resulted in a more destructive wave.
