if you dont have the level and are using the one inch of water method u can measure it in the corners and center with a measuring tape to see how far off you are
Hey steelo, i have my stand and it is a bit unleveled so i leveled it and i looked at the bottom frame and noticed that my tank was touching the stand in the middle but on the sides their is a slight gap in between could it be possible that the surface is uneven? Then i was thinking of also shimming the tank but i might buy a think piece of plywood waht do u think
@blackreef13 i have the same problem on my 125 gallon tank, if your stand is level but the surface is slightly out you can use a sheet of 1/4 or 1/2" styrofoam between the tank and the surface of your stand. This should account for any variance up to about 1/8 of an inch.
i leveled my tank and it still has alittle leak in the corner. i think that i just need to buy some aquarium safe sealant. if you or anyone have any ideas why this is happening, please comment back....
@MrIAN1077 The sealant will only patch the problem, and it may leak again. The best way to achieve a good seal is if the tank is empty and silicone sealant is placed on both the inside and outside of the tank, and then allowed to dry for a minimum of 24 hours before you use the tank again. Good luck.
@aharon115 There is no day 4 buddy. i have been taking the videos as the system gets set up and there are changes so on some days, there are no changes. I want to show how long it takes to set up a 90g system and also want to get across that patience is key to being successful in this hobby. Next update will be day 10 so it will skip 5 days pr so. Thanks for watching :)
my 4 footer is on an angle length ways, which is really akward when it comes to filling it because one end has a good inch from the hood but on the other end it is touching it. im not to sure bout shimming it but in the future when i revamp the tank ill shim it to make it level.. :)
@31668999 There are bigger shims that would level a tank with your excessive unleveled condition. Try asking at home depot to see what they recommend. I would try and level the system in this condition or in time, it may cause leaks. good luck.
Come on man! Lol. I want the ones on the corner. But I feel ya.

@oceandweller1 The new video is rendering as we speak and wont be done till 3 am. then another hour or so to upload it. Rating my videos is all I ask for from my viewers. Thumbs up or down does not matter to me, but I want a rating. Not too much to ask for since I take quality time from my schedule to answer peoples questions and upload videos. Which would you prefer, rate my videos or pay me for my services haa haa haaa :)
Thought I'd give Steezy a break tonight. I usually just absorb your videos without rating them. How important is it to rate them. Just wanted to know to make sure I give you the full props.
Hey
Can you hook me up with some real authentic underground New York mixtapes. I got the bad boy mixtapes 1-5 with DJ S&S, DJ Clue and more. I know it's old but man it's the bomb diggy.
Quick question... Your pc light is 420 or 460? Or 420/460. I saw marine depot has both individually or mixed 50/50. I hear the purple is better for corals. What's your opinion in this? Thanks in advance.
@javier91782 For this system my actinics are 420. For y 30g nano they are 460. It's a matter of preference really and both will work out well for you only the 420 have less par, more on the purple side, and bring out more fluorescence, while the 460 have more par, more blue, and less fluorescence
@vanhalenman60 I did that and mentioned it on the video too. I used the patio out door wood clear sealant and it is now water proof. Thanks for the feed back :)
My question doesn't have anything to do with this particular video but my question is by looking at my video, is the cloudiness normal? I added the 50 lbs of live rock a day ago and the water still looks like I just poured Liquid into it.. The cloudiness is so strong that the powerheads looks like Someone painted them white. The live rock as well!! What can I do or is this the normal cycle?
I just looked at yours online and I just saw the four blue and two halides. They said that there in there but I couldn't tell from the pic. I'm looking for more pics just out of curiosity cause thats way out my price range. Lol. The LED's must be hiding in there somewhere. That's what I get for trying to keep up with the Joneses. Lol. You've been more helpful than my friend. I got some new animals in the tank and I told my friend about it and he said I shouldn't have got that one because it's
Lol!! Man I thought wrong. ( still laughing! ) the guy I bought my fixture from took the LED's off. He had them drilled in. I bet you got a small kick out of this:). Oh yeah what's your water temp.
@oceandweller1 lol, it is apparent we do not have the same light fixture. My water temperature stays at a constant 76 to 78 degrees at all times, but I do have a chiller.
@oceandweller1 The LED's are build into my fixture. Bro, I have the "Coralife Aqualight Pro" metal halide system. It comes with 4 blue moon LED's which are simply for our viewing purposes, not necessarily beneficial to the reef tank. It does help with the dusk and down effect.
Sorry if I got it wrong but we have the same lighting fixture. What lights do you use other than the two metal halides that are in the center? And what hours are your lights on? And what temperature are you set at?
@oceandweller1 There are 2 power compact Fluorescents "Actinic" bulbs (96 watts each bulb), and 4 Blue Moon LED's. My metal halides are on for 10 hours every day, Actinics are on for 12 hours, and the LED's stay on for 14 hours. LED's go on first at 8 am, Actinics next at 9 am, MH's go on last at 10 am. Later in the evening, MH's go off at 8 pm first, then Actinics at 9 pm, and LED's go off at 10pm. This is a full days lighting just like the sun provides in nature. I never have algae problems :)
I think you said it was ok to swap out my four x2 blue actinic T-5's for some VHO florescent s. And if I decide to keep two of the blues can I keep those on by themselves at night. I don't no if u remember but I was using lights from 3-12am but my rock was starting to turn brown and my lfs said to do 5-12am to keep the rock from browning.
@oceandweller1 T5's are way better than VHO bulbs. I do not recall recommending you switch to VHO? I am confused here with the strange lighting hours, 12AM? The one thing i will tell you is this, your lighting should resemble that of nature, especially for corals. You can get away with less photo period if it is a fish only system, but even with live rock, your tank should get a full days sunlight. You need to look into ways to manage your nutrients, not cut back on the lighting period.
@newyorksteelo Learn alot from ur videos cant wait to see how it all turns out.. How many days r u going to let the water cycle? When is ur next video beening uploaded??
What do u think is better mixing salt and making your own saltwater or buying natural sea salt water from a lfs??
@Losangelesaquariums The tank is already fully plumbed and with saltwater in there. I am letting the system develop the slime and the skimmer to break in. Next video is coming soon so be on the lookout for it. I like to use my own RO/DI water and mix it with reef crystals. Its a peace of mind for me to know that I have the purest water and that I mixed it to my perfect specifications.
Just ordered the aqualight pro. Should have it here by Thursday. After this I will get a rodi unit then I'm start putting some corals. Great inspiration when watching ur videos. Thanks bro!
Keep makeing the great videos. I do have a ? When u had your deep sand bed what did u do to maintain it. I have about 5in or so with algae and live rock but am getting a film like on the top of the sand. What is it. Thanks
@reddogg850 Thanks. My deep sand bed took care of itself. When you said fil like algae, I am assuming cyanobacteria which is an indication of high phosphates and excess nutrients. I have 2 videos you should see to further help you out. Check out my videos called :Red Slime Algae (Cyanobacteria) Problems & Solutions" as well as "Reef Aquarium Old & New Tank Syndrome". Good luck.
My oceanic biocube has feet that make leveling a little more difficult. When I redo my set up and add the refugium I'm considering removing them to make leveling easier. The other issue is that the tank is on carpet so when I refill I will have to recheck for level as the tank settles. Thanks for another great video.
I really have went backwards in this hobby and when I filled up the 120 on April of 2010 I didn't take into consideration the weight of it when filled, so I didn't check if it was level or not. I now have a bad feeling that I'm going to have to take it down to level it. I have enough money to get all of the new equipment that I need now though.
@JamieT96 im in the same boat as u but i dont have the money to by a new light fixture for another tank in which i would keep the corals or the fish can i do this shimming if i just empty the tank half way? or 100 percent of the way keeping my animals in the sump i think im screwed if have 85 pounds of live rock even if i emptyed the tank
With your aquarium on the hardwood you are able to level with the tank empty. I had to put my tank on carpet, so I filled it up partially with water and let it settle and then shimmed it. Payed attention to the level while I filled it the rest of the way.
Very nice Steelo...I like how you are taking a lot of time to put your system back together instead of falling into the "I got to get it back up quick" syndrome...
hey newyorksteelo have you considered a long piece of plywood about an inch tall to place in the front behind the doors so that if there is a mishap the bottom of the stand can act as a pan so water doesn't get on the hardwood floor and being that you siliconed the inside?
@eDub0784 I think I will let it be just the way it is cause I have made sure that no hose will pop out of a pump accidentally or anything of the sort, and will talk about that on the next video. Thanks for the suggestion as well as for watching my video :)
@dm002a8686 No way man, not possible. 1cm is nothing man and wont do much of any damage. I would be more worried if the aquarium is unleveled like 1/4 of an inch or more. Good luck.
Something some people may want to keep in mind that shims should be under vertical supports or the when weight is applied it will warp the wood and will cause the tank to sink back to previous unleveled state and may cause troubles with doors opening.
You hit my trade Steelo (carpenter/construction) :~)
@tkdhav A good point. As long as it is shimmed all the way across and the gaps are filled with shims, it will remain leveled. I have since added the water and turned on all equipment and man is it silent in the living room. The noise is mostly coming from the MH fan and the MP40's. I am now looking into building my own canopy since it has to be one of a kind to house my MH fixture. I do not want to buy one already built and then have to buy a retrofit kit. Thanks for the comment :)
@tkdhav Yes, that is why there will be a fan on the left side of the top opening blowing in air, while the air escaped the right top side of the opening. This was planned out and there is an annotation in the video indicating it. This will also help with the heat although heat is never an issue when you have a chiller :) Thanks for the suggestions and for watching :)
@fhangorn Not needed since I already used a clear outdoor patio water resistant sealant inside of the stand, and also, the stand being made of solid oak wood would never experience what the old stand made of compressed wood experienced. It would be good to add some sort of plastic or rubber mat though to reduce vibration noise but i have since set up the sump and poured in the water and its really quiet in there :)
@lillilmike I wish so too but unfortunately I cannot hold the camera and do it at the same time :) At least there is an illustration and it is better than just reading about it you know :) Thanks for watching and commenting.
i liked what u did with the wood back man tank is coming together excited to see whats in store now that ur making RODI to add on the tank and soon see some habitants.
@pulga2389 Thanks man. Once I install the fan to keep the area aerated and fill the tank with saltwater. On to the inhabitants. It's a slow process but its best to be done correctly. Many more to come. Thanks for the comment and for watching ;)

This will also help with the heat although heat is never an issue when you have a chiller :) Thanks for the suggestions and for watching :)

why don´t you place a plastic mat or water ressistant material on the sump floor?
fhangorn 1 year ago
@fhangorn Not needed since I already used a clear outdoor patio water resistant sealant inside of the stand, and also, the stand being made of solid oak wood would never experience what the old stand made of compressed wood experienced. It would be good to add some sort of plastic or rubber mat though to reduce vibration noise but i have since set up the sump and poured in the water and its really quiet in there :)

I wish your videos would have more hands on approaches, it's good with all the talking but a lot of us viewers need to see and hear the experience.

@lillilmike I wish so too but unfortunately I cannot hold the camera and do it at the same time :) At least there is an illustration and it is better than just reading about it you know :) Thanks for watching and commenting.

@pulga2389 Thanks man. Once I install the fan to keep the area aerated and fill the tank with saltwater. On to the inhabitants. It's a slow process but its best to be done correctly. Many more to come. Thanks for the comment and for watching ;)
