I actually don't think he was based on anything if I remember right the Gonzo puppet was first used in The Great Santa Claus Switch as Snarl the Cigar Box Frackle. Then became Gonzo after that and was never given a species but It was often said he was a whatever which is what I've always thought. P.S My 8 year old cousin (now 9) whom I was watching at the time made that comment :\
