  • dude...you are examining this movie just a little too hard. you do realize that this is a fictional story and not based on real life, right?

  • movie tells about destiny

    too some extent my destiny

  • As far as Latika being a prostitute, she didn't really have a choice. Her kidnappers sold her into prostitution and she had one of two choices: Be sold to multiple strangers every night, or find one person who would provide a stable albeit violent envoirnment. If those are the only two choices open to her, then it would seem prudent to choose the safer of the two.

  • i agree with you... but you'll hav to consider that u r watching a commercial movie, not a documentary... the movie is 25% accurate & 75% exaggeration... slumdog has been appreciated the way it has because it potrays india the way the the western world wants to see and believe in. The western man has never seen or experienced poverty, hunger or hardship... its all a big deal to them...

  • Most shocking is how little attention the situation surrounding the children in the movie is receiving. If this was a Hollywood production, it would be expected that they be provided for. However, being British, there is oddly little fuss over their trust funds, provided they stay alive for x number years to reap the benefits; hypocrisy.

  • For example, contrary to the common perception, those public toilets are actually quite cool. The best thing is you dont need to flush. I've spent a good deal of the first fifteen years of my life in them... Its in one of these places where you are inspired to think big...

  • I agree, I felt just like you. This movie is extremely overrated and Boyle made some decisions in this movie that ruined it for me. It is not a great film and truthfully not deserving of the best film award.

  • Agreed. I preferred Frost/Nixon. Last I saw, Slumdog was right in front of Terminator 2 on IMDB's Top 250 list (actually Star Trek is creeping up on it).

  • i agree i saw it i didnt think it lived up to its reviews

  • A belated thanks for your sane opinion.

  • iv'e watched alot of your video's on movies, and to be honest you know fuck all about films, you actually hate great movies, so u suck balls, and are shit at life. good day.

  • See you in Hell.

  • i think salim is a realistic character because you can be really close to someone and they can be infected by peer pressure, the lightest way to put it. He deceived his brother many times for fortune and wealth, but in the end, he sacrificed himself for jamal because the trust was there. salim saw how much of a jerk (also a light way to put it) he had been and how much he deceived his brother's trust in him.

  • @hermitagedanceafan Salims character and Jamals character are interesting opposites. They both grew up in the same environment, on the same streets, yet they became different people. It shows the differences in their personalities: Jamal is guileless, and a little clueless where as Salim is shrewd, street savyy, and perhaps envious of his brother. Nature vs Nurture, it seems that this movie would promote the Nature mode of thinking: It's not your childhood that defines you rather your attitude.

  • i still dont think you watched the movie.

  • I doubt you watched it yourself.

  • actually if u saw his rant video it's nothing but rant about the movie.

He don't like the moie and he told u why

When he told us why i just explained to him what he thought was wrong about the movie next time before you choose sides watch his rant video first then read my comments.

  • maybe you did watch it you just were not paying attention to the most detailed parts. Like when he said who's american face is on the dollar bill it flashed back to the blind child and he asked jamal who's picture is on it jamal says a man who looks like a girl the blind kid says benjamin franklin. Thats AN ANSWER!

Now you get it dumb shit??

  • U must honestly be retarded. He likes the movie, you like the movie, so quit COMPLAINING! He's pointing out that it's not perfect. Deal with it and move the hell along.

  • Actually you are just one of those people who have not seen the movie yet, you watched the awards and get bumbed because your movie did not win and this one did so you hate it so much that you decide to talk shit about it. do people a favor and go see it and see why people like it so much instead of moping about it.

  • You're right, I didn't watch the movie. I simply and correctly guessed that Jamal's brother is an inconstant psycho. Just like how Jamal magically guessed the answers on the game show. I guess that since I'm a Native American (Indian), my guessing isn't as noteworthy to you.

  • he did not magically guess the answers it happend to him when he was a child thats the dam point of the whole movie! His brother just not turn physcho over nothing he lost his mom watched her die and now has to take responsibility of his younger brother. So yea obviously you didn't!

  • First of all, police in India do act that way. i should know, because my dad lived there all his life and he's told me all the things that the police do to people in India that are caught. So stop saying stuff that you dont know anything about! And another thing is that Salim's character is suppose to be complex that is what makes him human, and you may not believe in what he does but in his perpective he wants to make the most of his life even though it isnt the right thing to do.

  • Salim was drunk when he pulled the gun on Jamal and raped Latika. Not to mention he just got into Javed's gang.

Salim + alcohol + gang power = one bad brother

  • Goe Fawk ah hoe BISH!!!

  • it was not a vision of ram..just a boy dressed up as ram(kids often dress up for religious festivals).

Salim is a rough guy and does anything for money, but his brother is dear to him. he gave his life for jamal, and if you look closely you'll find that he was helping jamal in the most crucial moments.. and he wouldn't have shot Jamal.

  • In Durga Puja a little girl is worshiped as the personification of Durga. I saw young girls, as young as seven wearing saris during Saraswati Puja. Stands to reason a child would be dressed as Rama, especially if the raid was during a Hindu, or Muslim holiday.

  • Salim was cruel to Jamal the whole movie. He sold his Amitabh Buchen autograph and sold it for pocket change. Clark was trying to show that there is no loyalty in the slums when your eating hand to mouth. I'll give you the Rama appearance but it was a religious raid...who knows how those things go down??? My only gripe with the movie thats going to win best picture is that they didnt follow the rules of who wants to be a mill..You don't get Zero for missing the last question

  • Tsk-tsk...this world is just, too confusing a place for you, ha? ...you look so confounded throughout this "call for help" Poor poor you.

  • But even with all of its connect-the-dot contrivances, Slumdog didnt play out like much Oscar fare; it never eyed the little gold man from the outset, it had no big-money backing, no Hollywood talent. And in that way, the film itself has managed to espouse the very underdog spirit of its script. But still. Some of you continue to think that Slumdog isnt serious enough (boring enough?) to earn its nominations. Go watch Frost/Nixon then—I hear that ones quite swell.

  • Frost/Nixon is surprisingly energetic. Much more so than Benjamin Button. Both were conceived with Oscar intentions, but Button is a heartless film which meanders toward the predictable and nonsensical.

  • i love how u live in fantasy land where rape and torture doesn't exhist. ur what we like to call a "hater"

  • i think the "vision" of Rama was actually a kid dressed as him. I mean, the fight was between Hindus and Muslims, and i think it makes sense that the Hindus used the kid as a .. mascot, if you will. Also, about Latika being a prostitute, that shit actually happens! Little girls get kidnapped and get forced to make money through prostitution. And i think this movie's strongest message is to show the hopeless conditions of people born into slums, so it makes sense.

  • The use of a child as a holy war mascot is striking and entertaining in a very sick way. If Jamal can take a somewhat higher road than Salim, then it is disappointing to see Latika treated as less and placed in the Princess Toadstool role.

  • well...trust me i know what happens in india...for ur concern abt the salim char...his character was there to balance out the goodness of jamals character...it was there to show that although some people like jamal could overcome poverty, situations and live their life with dignity and truthfulness and honesty...most people cant ..even if they are blood related..thts y salim's character was so important..becuz had all three characters been so nice...it would have been a stretch...not everyone

  • in india who grows up in slums chose the right path...not everyone could distinguish between the right and the wrong...jamal and latika had the heart...the niceness ..the love live thru it...salim didnt...NOW...salims niceness to his brother...thats another thing..from the beginning of the movie..if u notice it carefully...salim has a soft spot for his brother...but he does not repect him..yea he would save him from the people tryin to make him blind...he would save him from the thugs

  • when they are trying to harm him and latika...but he never respected what jamal WANTS...like the autograph...like LATIKA...he loves his brother JUST ENOUGH to not let him get killed or get blinded... now why did he let go of latika in the end...that was because when he met jamal ...his long lost brother after so many years..and he saw tht jamal still loves latika and hasnt forgotten her...he gets that conscience call...he see that his brother is still the nice little innocent kid he was when he

  • Salim is only consistent in his inconsistency. It is infuriating on the intelligence to see a character who every time he appears to have learned his lesson, he ends up forgetting it. Frankly, (SPOILERS) I was more than glad to see him go because only after that would he finally be out of the picture. Boyle always places these characters (who act without reason, heart, or motive) in his films; making many critics' eyes roll as we scoff at what he calls compelling.

  • well..thats the thing with language and culture barriers...you would have to understand how people reach and adapt to different and similar situations in india....HUMAN BEHAVIOR IS THE SAME EVERYWHERE...thats not true...u had to understand the human behavior in india to enjoy this movie better...like heres an example...MOST PEOPLE DO NOT GET WHY JAMAL DELIBERATELY CHOSE THE WRONG ANSWER WHEN THE HOST GAVE HIM THE RIGHT CHOICE ON THE MIRROR IN THE BATHROOM...

  • The supposed belief is that I, living in Kansas, no nothing outside of wheat even when evidence can be presented of the contrary. I guess that unless I can be born in every country, only then can I fully know if a fictional character is an imbecile based on his/her erratic behavior. Seeing as how I'm not Dr. Sam Beckett, I'm sticking with my original statement.

  • you have a hard time considering the opinions of others...or maybe u r one of those egotistical people who just can not face that maybe they went wrong somewhere or maybe someone does know more than me about something...when i said "language and culture barrier"...it was an opinion...ur a critic...but tht shouldnt mean tht u know everything abt every movie...but whatever dude...when i first checked ur review..i thought ur a smart dude..who actually knows abt movies...but u r nothing but one

  • of those self satisfied maroons out there...sitting in their own box..and thinks "i know it all"...well whatever makes u happy...i am not sayin slumdog is the perfect movie...but the logic behind u not liking it makes u a sad ...in lack of a better word...stupid person...but like i said...WHATEVER MAKES U HAPPY

  • Did Danny put you up to this?

  • LMAO...u knw...u r a sad sad dumbass to even have that thought!!! anyways...i will end this here...i got better things to do and better people to argue with who actually uses logic !!!

  • @VaughnFry Have you observed much in human nature lately? It's our instinct to make the same mistakes over and over again until a lesson is learned, and some more than others. This serious character flaw in Salim only solidifies him as a believeable character. I've known people, my older brother, who make the same mistakes over and over again. I also know people who look at those mistakes made by others and take care not to replicate them. Salim is a believeable character BECAUSE of this flaw

  • last saw him...he was somewhat moved by the love jamal had for latika since the day he met latika in the slums...salim did not let latika go because he likes latika...he just wanted his brother to have her love after all these years...NOW if jamal had lost his path and heart and turned into some one bad...[say like SALIM]...then salim would not have felt the niceness around him...and he would have continued his selfish life..like he was all this time..may have turned worse...but JAMAL's niceness

  • for all these years since their childhood forced salim to look into his past and regret his choices and finally he decided to stand up ...not just against the mob boss but also against himself...we all make mistakes...we just dont chose a wrong side or a right side and stick to it...sometimes we make choices that we regret..sometimes we make choices that make us feel human.....thats what salims character was there for...SALIM was like the 1000 of poor ..neglected kids in india or anywhere in the

  • world as of that matter...we always see it in hollywood movies..in real life..that any kid...from any background...if they dont have anyone to guide em in their childhood...they usually get molded to their surroundings...SALIM like any other regular kid...got molded to the surroundings he grew up in...GANGS..THUGS...NO EDUCATION... in this movie SALIM is the regular kid...he is not the anomaly ...JAMAL IS THE ANOMALY...he turned out to be good in spite of the eevry thing bad that happened

  • around him...SALIM's life ...his choices...his inconsistency with distinguishing between right and wrong was to balance JAMAL'S character who always made the right call in his life..to me JAMAL'S character seemed more unbelievable than salim's...

  • Jamal took the high road because he could. Latika as a female slum child would not have the freedom or opportunity Jamal did. Women are frequently treated badly in India, and that shouldn't be changed in the movie so it doesn't offend western sensibilities. It should actually be seriously documented in order TO offend our sensibilities so that we might do something about it. To you Hindus. I'm aware you worship devis. However India has a bad track record in the literal world. Sati for one.

  • salim's actions made sense, to a certain extent. he was going back and forth between his own individual survival and the survival of his younger brother. so, almost, individual responsibility vs. community responsibility. as far as latika as a prostitute goes, i don't really think that that is a global issue to be sort of brushed under the carpet because it's been done too many times. it should be done until it is no longer relevant. prostitution is often the only option for women, unfortunately

  • After listening to your ranting, I seriously lost my own judgment on the this movie! What I can do now is to send all critics who vote for it in critics' choice award, BAFTA award, Golden Globe, Oscar etc. (And gave it a 4 star in NY Times, People, etc.) to you for a counseling session. They must be victim of mass hysteria!

  • you even dont know main characters name...i dont think you have any right to review movies..go do something else....

  • I thought that the main character was named Jamal and not Salim.

  • ohh...and the vision of rama made complete sense...his mother was just slaughtered by fanatical hindus...and he envisioned rama (synonymous with hinduism) blocking his path...

  • I did a full written review where I explain very well that I understood all of your points. Of course I understood that it's a vision. However, it's not something that fit within the film. It is the only answer that isn't grounded in reality. It is obvious that the writer was reaching, "well, let's just say he saw a vision and move to the next question."

  • it wasn't a vision, it's a real live child dressed as a god for religious purposes that he came across while running from the rioting scenes

  • @art545454 Or it was a kid dressed up like Rama to bless the raid, or for a hindu holiday or something. Didn't have to be a vision.

  • even though it is a rant...and u r entitled to ur opinion...but god u dint get the movie! u dint get its energy, it color, its magnificence, its spirit of hope and redemption...u dissected it like a frog in a laboratory...

  • lol, it's refreshing to hear a guy rooting for us girl "power", thanks! out of the three, Latika's character is the least developed, but it doesn't bother me so much bc I see this movie as more of Jamil's point of view. It would definitely be interesting to see Latika's view though. I still think this role for her is right for the movie, else it wouldn't be as powerful. If u don't like fault the screen writer for adding this twist of a love story (not in the book Q&A)to portray universal appeal

  • It seems like you're just trying to find bad things to say about this movie...

  • Right you are. This video is not an example of a review; I labeled it rant. The goal is to illustrate what kept me from loving this picture. My written review, linked in the information box, shares more insight into what this film got right. My video on Frost/Nixon is very different because the faults I found where insignificant to enjoying the film.

  • CONT(from bottom post)...do you expect a girl growing up in the slum become?!?! I actually applaud Danny's vision by hinting at the obvious but not making it grotesquely uncomfortable for audiences to watch, it's not at all a brutal depiction of "prostitution", she belongs to the top mob man and that's all we can assume.

Liking a movie or not is base on taste but I also think this one, specifically, also depends on cultural knowledge. I can't say enough how well this movie had succeeded for me

  • As the only movie critic on YouTube who actually responds to intelligible comments, I grant you one. History shows that men control the film business. They have the money, and frequently neglect female characters because of notions that what worked in the past, will continue to sell tickets in the future. That is why women are so often objectified and in need of rescue. Latika was a likable character and I found it an unfortunate error to reduce her to an overused cliché.

  • @VaughnFry That's not the case in real life though! Women in the prostitution business are S.O.L. They have little to no chance of improving their lifestyles, they're considered by many to be pariahs (despite the caste system being illegalized it still lingers in some places), and sometimes their only chance at a life without an STD is to give themselves as a consort. Perhaps you shoudl watch/rewatch Born into Brothels.

  • ran out of space...as for Rama kid, I read on a post somewhere where an Indian viewer comment on this same question. They say that its very common for a young kid to dressed up in a deity god, especially during holidays. Being Asian myself, I don't doubt the brutality or "loose" handling of the laws and such especially in poorer area of town (in my own hometown there's plenty of "crooked cops")...As for your reasoning of Latika, I'm sorry you don't like prostitute character but what CONT...

  • I've heard some people complain about that, for me I like the portrayal of Salim, it doesn't portray him as one-dimensional character veering only in one path. As human I believe we are unpredictable creatures full of hypocrisies and inconsistency...even the nicest person will do something regrettably bad at one point(to what extend is depending on the moment & the person) he was drunk and high on power trip, so although its on the high end of drama, it's what makes the movie so engrossing!

  • haha xD, i just made a rant to about 10 minutes ago

  • On this movie? What timing!

  • ya :P, i just deleted it though, cause ur was better and i don't think it was rly my style :P

so i made another rant on short forms XD, if u want to check it out it's in my channel box called "Rofl isn't a word"
