Ok I have been supporting Buchanan for a long time and Ron Paul is my political hero. What i think pat is saying here is not just ron paul's point it goes beyond that, so yes he's supporting Ron Paul but not blindly. What he basically means is that yes the war is major drag(but for now). The war event has tipped the scale on the economy only becuz our ECONOMY IS BUILT ON SHAKY FOUNDATION IN THE FIRST PLACE. so in the long term the war is minor(but it played a central part in junking our economy)
Did Buchannon not say his man of the year was Petraeus? The war is the problem obviously as we cannot allow business to function under this debt. The war caused the economy obviously.
As usual, we have the rabble of idiots, "left" and "right", with the only intelligent, sane voice being that of Pat Buchanan.
Zuckerman, Crowley and Clift are all globalist maniacs, as is the easy assumption for about 95% of the marionette talking heads we get stuck with.
No logic whatsoever, and somebody like Clift is somehow supposed to be more liberal than Zuck and Crowl even as she agrees with them in near-totality as far as global overreach without logic as to interest or sovereignty.
And why is that? Because the real war is between patriots and one-worlders. Unfortunately for America, and the the rest of the globe, the one-worlders won long ago and are merely doing their victory lap(s) as the US crumbles as an autonomous or pure entity.
The neocons are Trotskyist chicken hawks (constant revolution, and disaster resulting from that, over and over), which is why they openly attract names like Christopher Hitchens to their cause, as only he is honest enough to readily admit.
Zuckerman: "4 years of war, the economy was booming."
Um, for whom? The top 1%.
Zuckerman's another neocon, and then you have Crowley...somehow segueing to a rant about the economy of IRAQ. WTF?!?!
These globalists are not insane or stupid (well, maybe Crowley), rather they just assume we, the viewing public, are. I'm supposed to be happy that US jobs continually poor overseas because this helps "the people of the world". America? Oh, well, FUCK America, in coded language, of course.
He basically says as he sees it. He doesn't blindly follow people/or say things. His opinions have always been more or less consistent.....very reason why he's pretty much left out in the dark. You don't have maniacally spout the same lines repeatedly to show that u support some1(also shows athat u r a noob with limited background knowledge).
when did he support romney???!!! H emight have some good things about him, but he does the same thing for barack, he regularly says that barack is a strong candidate. but being an observer is different from being a supporter.
All need to read End of America, Naomi Wolf, 2007. You will than begin to see the chain of events unfolding. Remember, the banksters always win, they are in control. Eleanor is right, if the general public can ever figure out what is going on, the other candidates are in big trouble. Notice others try not to mention Ron! Go Ron Paul 2008
mort sukerman is a paid golbalist bullshitter, look where figthing a terriosit group made by the cia, its all government made, they have to break the old system to make the new one ron paul speaks the truth, no gold behind our money, just the world bankers, the dictate what our paper (toilet) money is worth, they want chips for us all and bar codes, and these well to do asswipe talkin dont live here with the real workin class, bush is great siek heil...
GATA, a non-profit 501 headquartered in Manchester, Conn., further asserts the federal government strategy to manipulate the price of gold has begun to fail.
"Gold's recent rise toward $900 per ounce shows that the price suppression scheme is faltering," the GATA ad reads.
"When it is widely understood how central banks have been suppressing gold, its price may rise to $3,000 or $5,000 an ounce or more."
It all comes down to "Fractional Reserve Banking", the biggest fraud in human history. With the inclusion of compound interest. The Fed is doomed and totally exposed by it's own greed and treasonous corruption.
If this nightmare continues (it will) the Neo-Fascists will have painted targets on their backs for the world to shoot at. They will run and they will be found!
What do any of these people know about the cost of war or the "drag on the economy"? I don't see them putting their lives on the line in a war for the military industrial complex and corporate profits; or working for minimum wage. lol
I agree with Crowley that federal spending is the major problem. Of course that includes Iraq, but even more so the domestic spending on education, health care, etc. The federal government is an out-of-control monster, and is heading toward a police state. More people incarcerated than any other country in the world, and among the establishment party presidential candidates only Ron Paul is talking about ending the failed "War on Drugs" and restoring fiscal sanity.
Me racist? Well... No seriously! This is purely an economic issue. Do Illegal Aliens need SSN's for this??? From what I read, NO they do not!!! If they do not have SSN's how do you do a credit check??? You know, computing the likelihood that people will pay their bills. E C O N O M I C S...
No time for accademic interrests or passing fancies. MAYDAY FUCKING MAYDAY THE SHIP IS FUCKING SINKING!!! THE FUCKING CHINESE OWN AMERICA!!! do you have any comprehension of the absolute galactic SHIT we are in???
Too fucking late for interests. AMERICA IS GETTING FUCKED FROM EVERY HOLE!!! This so called CREDIT CRUNCH was by fucking design. People live well beyond their means. IN SHORT
Bedlam, Armageddon. It is all coming. The new Dark Ages will be here shortly...Now just wait for the big boys to start buying up property...YOU WILL NOW BECOME A FEUDAL TENNANT TO THE ELITES.
Even the elites are doomed in the long run. The underlying cause of the mess we are in is not just the Federal Reserve, fiat money, etc. (though they certainly have exacerbated and accelerated it).
The fundamental cause is that we have used up roughly half of the non-renewable resources on this planet. The remaining half will be harder to extract, and cost more. Hubbert's Peak is upon us, and with it comes all Four Horsemen.
Human civilization as we've known it is unsustainable.
Unsustainable??? That sounds to me like Sustainability Theory?. But isnt that the same argument the elites use to regulate and tax us to death??? Isnt that the same argument used to reduce population??? This is also the same ploy they use to limit private property... right??? Eminent Domain is a good example of this. Look it up in Google.
Fact: In 1956, geologist Dr. Marion King Hubbert established the principle that, for a single oil well, or a field, or any oil-bearing geographical area, up to and including the planet as a whole, productivity will increase, then peak, then enter terminal decline.
Fact: at that time, he calculated that this would happen to the USA in 1970. He was widely ridiculed for this.
Fact: he was right. Well, off by a few months: the peak happened in October 71.
The only reason he was off by even that much was because neither he nor anyone else in 1956 knew about the massive Prudhoe Bay field in Alaska. That bought us another year.
Fact: We began seriously interfering with the Middle East beginning in the 1970s. Coincidence?
Fact: No new refineries have been built in the USA since the 1970s. Coincidence?
I live in what used to be a MAJOR oil-producing state. We used to supply 95% of the USA's oil. Now, it's < 5% and dropping.
I was a young adult during the Iran hostage crisis and oil embargo of the late 70s. Gas jumped from 60¢ to $1 almost overnight. New gas pumps had to be made as the old ones couldn't handle past 99.9¢/gal. LONG lines. Rationing. We had to set thermostats high in the summer and low in the winter. 55mph speed limit on the Interstates to save gas.
ALL THAT because the total oil supply to the US dropped by ONLY 10%!
That was TEMPORARY and POLITICAL. What's coming is PERMANENT and LAWS OF PHYSICS.
Nobody even mentions the fact that the US government has given all of our jobs away through NAFTA, CAFTA and such. Nobody has the money to buy anything because everybody has shit jobs now.
The war & the economy are tied together. Poor americans haven't figured it out yet, you can't spend a trillion dollars overseas, print money out of thin air & expect your dollar to hold its value.
Clift and Bucannan and McLaughlin are all right- the war is a BIG drag on the US economy but, as Bucannan points out, it is certainly not the only drag. The overwhelmingly ultimate biggest drag the US economy are the apathetic citizens who tolerate incompetance and even tyrany within their own elected government.
If people get very uncomfortable they will eventually get off the couch. I don't wish discomfort or adversity on anybody but I have noticed that it puts people in motion.
I am afraid you are more optimistic than I. Everyone acts in their own self-interest; the government has made it a goal to consciously enslave through provision. When government handouts, food, jobs, etc. become so large that they influence the electorate to preserve these handouts, all is lost. This is how it is in the socialist states in Europe. Most work for and are owned by the state. They will riot if government reduces provision. We are headed in the same direction. Socialism
Silly senile old farts! Shouting louder doesn't make your delusional perceptions have anything to do with reality. Dr. Paul stands correct. You can shit talk all you want about his hairstyle or tie but barking meaningless nonsense cannot disprove the clear logic of his statement. Let's give Eleanor a megaphone next time okay?
Zuckerman simply wants to protect Israel; he will never admit that the war is sapping America's wealth and blood. Let's stop arming the Arabs and Israel will take care of themselves. Let's cut spending, bring the troops home and stop a foreign policy that breeds war. A strong interconnected global economy will encourage peace based on mutual interests.
PRoblem is, Israel wants to take over all of Jerusalem, tear down the Dome of the Rock, and rebuild the Temple there which will have EVERY living Arab banging on their gates with bombs strapped to their chests. Israel & the US are setting the stage for things to come for the benefit of Israelis & the detriment of the US.
Israel lived for years with peaceful Arabs, and I don't believe that is Israel's intent to tear down the Dome of the Rock. The USA should mind it's own business, not other countries. We should be friends and trading partners with the entire world, but not with weapons. We should let Israel and their neighbors work out their problems without our interference. If Israel is attacked then it will up to Congress to decide if we go to war not the President.
Eleanor Clift tends to have some of the most incisive takes on things, but too often has to scream at the top of her lungs to get a word in edgewise. It's a shame the media won't give Ron Paul the time of day.
Most of the money in Iraq is wasted, just like in most war zones. And the economy is an interrelated thing in the US. You can't have major problems with the housing market and the oil market, and not have it have a knock-on effect in the rest of the economy.
I don't really want the our economy to totally crater, but in the next few months you'll see our economy going down & down & down, and as it does the support for Ron Paul going up & up & up.
I'm not sure Ron Paul can get us out of the horrible mess Bush has put us in -- BUT HE'S OUR ONLY HOPE.
Zuckerman knows more about the economy? What makes you think that? Because he's a publisher? It's publisher's like him that don't print the whole truth and thus lead the uninformed to drink the Kool-Aid. What he fails to mention is the inevitable clash between bourgeoisie and proletariat where people like him will be hung from a flagpole.
djgeoffe: If you were talking to me, I say that Zuckerman knows more about the economy because everytime he starts throwing around terms like "credit swaps," the rest of the show's panel sit there like dopey little kids. Also, you may not know that at the end of this show, Zuckerman predicted that we'll have the worst recession since the Great Depression. Hopefully he was wrong about that one.
The gold standard is great if you want to limit the money supply to exactly how much gold you have. But then when you want to ease up the money supply for more lending and investment, you can't unless you get more gold. That's actually a good recipe for creating a massive credit crunch and stalling the economy. See: late 1800s. PS: I like Ron Paul, but let's be honest -- Zuckerman knows more about the economy than everyone else on this show and surely more than most commenters here.
Most Paul supporters seem to "know" that the Federal Reserve is bad. But seriously, would you REALLY rather have Congress controlling the money supply? Sounds like "out of the frying pan and into the fire" to me.
@PilsenB - Would you have us believe that the current system, with the Fed operating with impunity, in totaly secrecy and with no oversite is democratic? Many would argue that the Fed operates solely for the benefit of the banking institutions, allowing them to operate in the most profitable manner possible, while passing off all the risk to the American Tax Payer. This is what we see happening now. At least the people would have some redress if it were directly controlled by congress.
citizen: Your comment is full of distortions about the nature and operations of the fed. Unless you can be honest in your statements, please quite commenting.
@nicholas9999 - Point me to the findings / presentation of a recent detailed audit and I will retract my statements. Otherwise, they are totally honest. Perhaps ignorant, but honest.
citizen: federalreserve dot gov/generalinfo/faq/faqfrs dot htm#9 Might have been a bit hasty in my earlier comment. This explains some of the oversight, and if you click on the annual report stuff, it's got some audit info stuff in it. I'm not an accountant, so I'm not sure what I'm looking at.
citizenBNW: You say that the Fed operates "in total secrecy and with no oversight." Actually, the Fed releases detailed minutes of its meetings to the public. And twice a year, Bernanke travels to Capitol Hill and delivers legally-required testimony to Congress. The Fed itself was created by Congress, Jekyll Island notwithstanding. And the interest the Fed can earn is limited by law. A "banker's bank" acts as a safety valve, providing additional money (aka liquidity) when needed.
"The powers delegated by the proposed Constitution to the federal government are few and defined. Those which are to remain in the State governments are numerous and indefinite. The former will be exercised principally on external objects, as war, peace, negotiation and foreign commerce." -
James Madison, Federalist No. 45
See Article I Section 8 of the US Constitution
The FED is a concept was developed during the socialist FDR era.
The FED was created when FDR was Assistant secretary of the Navy. The President was Woodrow Wilson. I agree that FDR made it worse by not getting rid of the Fed after it caused the depression. Instead we have deficit spending replace the gold standard.
I stand corrected, your right of course. FDR invented so many socialist programs, I forgot that this one was not one of them. However, it's luckly for FDR that the FED was invented or he would have never been elected. The FED certainly made the stock market collapse and money crunch much worst following 1929.
@PilsenB - When they release the entire minutes of meetings like the one they held early morning last week prior to the market opening I may start to believe that. The dog and pony show on capital hill is a joke. I understand the stated purpose of the lender of last resort. I just don't take the stated purpose at face value. Cui Bono?
citizenBNW: Actually, they do release minutes of unscheduled meetings. Go to federalreserve dot gov/monetarypolicy/fomc.htm. The minutes for the unscheduled meeting should be appended to the 1/29-30 meeting minutes, which should be released in late February.
@PilsenB - cont'd - Interest is 6% on reserve deposits right? And interest on treasuries held by the Fed are rebated right? I think I understand, but isn't the real coin made in the FRB game by the member banks?
citizenBNW: Re: the 6 percent, my understanding is that that's actually the maximum allowable dividend earnings member banks can earn for their shares in the Fed. As for member banks making "coin" -- yes, banking is profitable! Although maybe not profitable enough, because a lot of banks have been swallowed up in consolidations. If you want to look at something interesting, though, check out the Fed-orchestrated bailout of the LTCM hedge fund in 1998. And also how they stopped reporting "M3."
citizenBNW: I will say that in general terms I agree with you're saying about risk. Too often "we the people" are called upon to bail out the financiers when they don't manage risk well, e.g., propping up the LTCM hedge fund in 1998, bailing out foreign currencies, etc. All in the name of "financial stability."
@PilsenB - What Dr. Paul is proposing is allowing Gold and Silver to circulate as competing currencies without taxes on every transaction. Not an immediate return to the gold standard. It is humorous to me that Mr. Zuckerman acknowledges how over leveraged the banks are but dismisses Dr. Paul's call for monetary reform. In a monetary system of bank credit, the banks get over leveraged because of the monetary policy. Monetary policy and banking leverage are one in the same issue.
citizen: Are you suggesting that banks can't get over-leveraged simply because the economy may be in the middle of "good times"?? Do you mean to say that the FTC or other agencies ought not to do their part to avert predatory lending? Fed-blaming is the latest refuge of people who can't admit to the real causes of problems in our economy.
@nicholas9999 - If I were a smartass I might say by 'good times' do you mean a bubble created by the Fed exacerbating the business cycle with loose policy? I would probably examine the 'real' reserve ratios and Regulation D games being played by reclassifying demand deposit accounts to time deposit accounts by member banks.
citizen: Here is the problem. You're continuing to ignore the root causes of problems. When is a bubble not a bubble? Is it when investment results in long term growth in an economy? As I've said already, you can always blame the fed, someone always is advantaged, and someone is always hurt by any move it makes. There are always going to be business cycles. The fed moves to offset and contain these cycles so they are not as extreme as they might otherwise be.
@nicholas9999 - I would argue that one class benefits a majority of the time while one suffers a majority of the time. It is not random. I am not ready to hand the Fed a halo. They operate for the benefit of the member banks, the political class and the corporate plutocracy more often than the common man. They are not just the messenger. They are not neutral. This is the way I see it.
citizen: As to the way deposits are classified, now you're talking about a specific gripe with the fed, and/or its member banks. I'm not sure what effect those classifications will have. Are you saying such reclassifications will have the effect of allowing banks to loan more money?? Not sure where you're going with that.
@nicholas9999 - Yes. Across the board reclassification of demand deposits as time deposits. One has a reserve requirement and another does not. The end result is exactly that, to lend more money from the same size deposit thus leveraging the institution even further. Both my bank and credit union implemented the changes in 2Q2007.
Zuckerman is a tool. He thinks we're not going to be in a recession at all but has no economic basis for his claims. The NY Daily News isn't worth being used as toilet paper no less reading material.
The only liberal on the panel show is Eleanor Cliff, and she was the only one who was willing to give Ron Paul his due. I may not agree with some of Paul's ideas but on the economic mess he is absolutely right.
Watching this makes me ill. More wealthy elites having no earthly idea how the average American lives. Economy booming in the first 4 years of the war?? What planet are they living on??
I watched this two nights ago thanks for putting this on. I say we send a bill to Iraq, Israel, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, and the United Nations for fighting this war. The bill should come to at least six trillion dollars. We should also send a bill to France, Great Brittan, Poland and Germany for fighting in WW2. Send a bill to the oil companies for boosting their profits to the tune of 1 trillion dollars.
Zuckerman and Buchanan clearly do not understand our economic policies. Sure the war was a boon until the U.S. was under a 9.2 trillion dollar deficit to China because of the war. Sure the dollar was strong until everyone starting dumping it because of our debt and the war.
J1: I was gonna say - Am I the only one who finds it ironic that ol' Morty is talking about how horrible the economy is? Of course he loves Iraq war. Israel is getting her Mosul-Haifa pipeline & "Clean Break". Their done downgrading this country. Thanks Greenspan, Bernanke, Rothschild, Warburg, Lazard, Feith, Perle, Kristol, Podhoretz. Time to move on to UAE and Qatar. The textbooks framed expulsion all wrong.
McLaughlin is cool but that other fucker has no idea what he is talking about. How could 600 billion dollars of printed money to fight the iraq war not affect the US economy? Where does he think inflation comes from? What a FUCKING idiot.
The printing of money by the federal reserve which creates low interest rates, creates artificial inflation and increased credit surpluses. The low interest rates are what cause people, corporations and businesses to depend fully on debt in order to meet their needs.

Ok I have been supporting Buchanan for a long time and Ron Paul is my political hero. What i think pat is saying here is not just ron paul's point it goes beyond that, so yes he's supporting Ron Paul but not blindly. What he basically means is that yes the war is major drag(but for now). The war event has tipped the scale on the economy only becuz our ECONOMY IS BUILT ON SHAKY FOUNDATION IN THE FIRST PLACE. so in the long term the war is minor(but it played a central part in junking our economy)
sarjil 3 years ago
Did Buchannon not say his man of the year was Petraeus? The war is the problem obviously as we cannot allow business to function under this debt. The war caused the economy obviously.

As usual, we have the rabble of idiots, "left" and "right", with the only intelligent, sane voice being that of Pat Buchanan.
Zuckerman, Crowley and Clift are all globalist maniacs, as is the easy assumption for about 95% of the marionette talking heads we get stuck with.
No logic whatsoever, and somebody like Clift is somehow supposed to be more liberal than Zuck and Crowl even as she agrees with them in near-totality as far as global overreach without logic as to interest or sovereignty.
sunshinebutmorerain 4 years ago
And why is that? Because the real war is between patriots and one-worlders. Unfortunately for America, and the the rest of the globe, the one-worlders won long ago and are merely doing their victory lap(s) as the US crumbles as an autonomous or pure entity.
The neocons are Trotskyist chicken hawks (constant revolution, and disaster resulting from that, over and over), which is why they openly attract names like Christopher Hitchens to their cause, as only he is honest enough to readily admit.
sunshinebutmorerain 4 years ago
Zuckerman: "4 years of war, the economy was booming."
Um, for whom? The top 1%.
Zuckerman's another neocon, and then you have Crowley...somehow segueing to a rant about the economy of IRAQ. WTF?!?!
These globalists are not insane or stupid (well, maybe Crowley), rather they just assume we, the viewing public, are. I'm supposed to be happy that US jobs continually poor overseas because this helps "the people of the world". America? Oh, well, FUCK America, in coded language, of course.

Buchanan has one opinion for his website, one for McGlaughlin and one for MSNBC. The man flip flops more than Romney. He's a joke.

He basically says as he sees it. He doesn't blindly follow people/or say things. His opinions have always been more or less consistent.....very reason why he's pretty much left out in the dark. Bedlam, Armageddon. It is all coming. The new Dark Ages will be here shortly...Now just wait for the big boys to start buying up property...YOU WILL NOW BECOME A FEUDAL TENNANT TO THE ELITES.
uhaegde 4 years ago
Even the elites are doomed in the long run. The underlying cause of the mess we are in is not just the Federal Reserve, fiat money, etc. (though they certainly have exacerbated and accelerated it).
The fundamental cause is that we have used up roughly half of the non-renewable resources on this planet. The remaining half will be harder to extract, and cost more. Hubbert's Peak is upon us, and with it comes all Four Horsemen.
Human civilization as we've known it is unsustainable.
COMALiteJ 4 years ago 2
Unsustainable??? That sounds to me like Sustainability Theory?. But isnt that the same argument the elites use to regulate and tax us to death??? Isnt that the same argument used to reduce population??? This is also the same ploy they use to limit private property... right??? Eminent Domain is a good example of this. Look it up in Google.
uhaegde 4 years ago
The thing is, this time it's for real.
COMALiteJ 4 years ago
The only reason he was off by even that much was because neither he nor anyone else in 1956 knew about the massive Prudhoe Bay field in Alaska. That bought us another year.
Fact: We began seriously interfering with the Middle East beginning in the 1970s. Coincidence?
Fact: No new refineries have been built in the USA since the 1970s. Coincidence?
I live in what used to be a MAJOR oil-producing state. We used to supply 95% of the USA's oil. Now, it's < 5% and dropping.
COMALiteJ 4 years ago
COMALiteJ 4 years ago
And it will be much, MUCH worse than a 10% drop.
Look up "Hubbert's Peak" for more info.

Socialism

Zuckerman simply wants to protect Israel; he will never admit that the war is sapping America's wealth and blood. Let's stop arming the Arabs and Israel will take care of themselves. Let's cut spending, bring the troops home and stop a foreign policy that breeds war. A strong interconnected global economy will encourage peace based on mutual interests.
erasedcitizen2008 4 years ago 4
PRoblem is, Israel wants to take over all of Jerusalem, tear down the Dome of the Rock, and rebuild the Temple there which will have EVERY living Arab banging on their gates with bombs strapped to their chests. Israel & the US are setting the stage for things to come for the benefit of Israelis & the detriment of the US.
FattKidd 4 years ago
Israel lived for years with peaceful Arabs, and I don't believe that is Israel's intent to tear down the Dome of the Rock. The USA should mind it's own business, not other countries. We should be friends and trading partners with the entire world, but not with weapons. We should let Israel and their neighbors work out their problems without our interference. If Israel is attacked then it will up to Congress to decide if we go to war not the President.
erasedcitizen2008 4 years ago
Eleanor Clift tends to have some of the most incisive takes on things, but too often has to scream at the top of her lungs to get a word in edgewise. It's a shame the media won't give Ron Paul the time of day.

Most of the money in Iraq is wasted, just like in most war zones. And the economy is an interrelated thing in the US. You can't have major problems with the housing market and the oil market, and not have it have a knock-on effect in the rest of the economy.

Zuckerman knows more about the economy? What makes you think that? Because he's a publisher? It's publisher's like him that don't print the whole truth and thus lead the uninformed to drink the Kool-Aid. What he fails to mention is the inevitable clash between bourgeoisie and proletariat where people like him will be hung from a flagpole.
djgeoffe 4 years ago
djgeoffe: If you were talking to me, I say that Zuckerman knows more about the economy because everytime he starts throwing around terms like "credit swaps," the rest of the show's panel sit there like dopey little kids. Also, you may not know that at the end of this show, Zuckerman predicted that we'll have the worst recession since the Great Depression. Hopefully he was wrong about that one.
PilsenB 4 years ago
He IS wrong, but not in the right direction.
What's coming (and sooner than you think) won't be the worst recession since the Great Depression.
It will be an outright global DEPRESSION that will make the Great Depression look like the Dot-COM Boom in comparison.
And, it will NEVER END until humanity itself finally becomes extinct, which will take a VERY long time.
Look up "Hubbert's Peak."
Ron Paul can NOT save us from this, unfortunately. It's far, far too late.
COMALiteJ 4 years ago
The gold standard is great if you want to limit the money supply to exactly how much gold you have. But then when you want to ease up the money supply for more lending and investment, you can't unless you get more gold. That's actually a good recipe for creating a massive credit crunch and stalling the economy. See: late 1800s. PS: I like Ron Paul, but let's be honest -- Zuckerman knows more about the economy than everyone else on this show and surely more than most commenters here.
PilsenB 4 years ago
Most Paul supporters seem to "know" that the Federal Reserve is bad. But seriously, would you REALLY rather have Congress controlling the money supply? Sounds like "out of the frying pan and into the fire" to me.
PilsenB 4 years ago
@PilsenB - Would you have us believe that the current system, with the Fed operating with impunity, in totaly secrecy and with no oversite is democratic? Many would argue that the Fed operates solely for the benefit of the banking institutions, allowing them to operate in the most profitable manner possible, while passing off all the risk to the American Tax Payer. This is what we see happening now. At least the people would have some redress if it were directly controlled by congress.
citizenBNW 4 years ago 2
citizen: Your comment is full of distortions about the nature and operations of the fed. Unless you can be honest in your statements, please quite commenting.
nicholas9999 4 years ago
@nicholas9999 - Point me to the findings / presentation of a recent detailed audit and I will retract my statements. Otherwise, they are totally honest. Perhaps ignorant, but honest.
citizenBNW 4 years ago
citizen: federalreserve dot gov/generalinfo/faq/faqfrs dot htm#9 Might have been a bit hasty in my earlier comment. This explains some of the oversight, and if you click on the annual report stuff, it's got some audit info stuff in it. I'm not an accountant, so I'm not sure what I'm looking at.
nicholas9999 4 years ago
citizenBNW: You say that the Fed operates "in total secrecy and with no oversight." Actually, the Fed releases detailed minutes of its meetings to the public.
PilsenB 4 years ago
"The Fed itself was created by Congress...."
The FED is a concept was developed during the socialist FDR era.
erasedcitizen2008 4 years ago
The FED was created when FDR was Assistant secretary of the Navy. The President was Woodrow Wilson. I agree that FDR made it worse by not getting rid of the Fed after it caused the depression. Instead we have deficit spending replace the gold standard.
hiimallen 4 years ago
I stand corrected, your right of course. FDR invented so many socialist programs, I forgot that this one was not one of them. However, it's luckly for FDR that the FED was invented or he would have never been elected. The FED certainly made the stock market collapse and money crunch much worst following 1929.
erasedcitizen2008 4 years ago
@PilsenB - When they release the entire minutes of meetings like the one they held early morning last week prior to the market opening I may start to believe that. The dog and pony show on capital hill is a joke. I understand the stated purpose of the lender of last resort. I just don't take the stated purpose at face value. Cui Bono?
citizenBNW 4 years ago
citizenBNW: Actually, they do release minutes of unscheduled meetings. Go to federalreserve dot gov/monetarypolicy/fomc.htm. The minutes for the unscheduled meeting should be appended to the 1/29-30 meeting minutes, which should be released in late February.
PilsenB 4 years ago
@PilsenB - cont'd - Interest is 6% on reserve deposits right? And interest on treasuries held by the Fed are rebated right? I think I understand, but isn't the real coin made in the FRB game by the member banks?
citizenBNW 4 years ago
citizenBNW: Re: the 6 percent, my understanding is that that's actually the maximum allowable dividend earnings member banks can earn for their shares in the Fed.
PilsenB 4 years ago
citizenBNW: I will say that in general terms I agree with you're saying about risk. Too often "we the people" are called upon to bail out the financiers when they don't manage risk well, e.g., propping up the LTCM hedge fund in 1998, bailing out foreign currencies, etc. All in the name of "financial stability."
PilsenB 4 years ago
@PilsenB - What Dr. Paul is proposing is allowing Gold and Silver to circulate as competing currencies without taxes on every transaction. Not an immediate return to the gold standard. It is humorous to me that Mr. Zuckerman acknowledges how over leveraged the banks are but dismisses Dr. Paul's call for monetary reform. In a monetary system of bank credit, the banks get over leveraged because of the monetary policy. Monetary policy and banking leverage are one in the same issue.
citizenBNW 4 years ago
citizen: Are you suggesting that banks can't get over-leveraged simply because the economy may be in the middle of "good times"?? Do you mean to say that the FTC or other agencies ought not to do their part to avert predatory lending? Fed-blaming is the latest refuge of people who can't admit to the real causes of problems in our economy.
nicholas9999 4 years ago
@nicholas9999 - If I were a smartass I might say by 'good times' do you mean a bubble created by the Fed exacerbating the business cycle with loose policy? I would probably examine the 'real' reserve ratios and Regulation D games being played by reclassifying demand deposit accounts to time deposit accounts by member banks.
citizenBNW 4 years ago
citizen: Here is the problem. You're continuing to ignore the root causes of problems. When is a bubble not a bubble? Is it when investment results in long term growth in an economy? As I've said already, you can always blame the fed, someone always is advantaged, and someone is always hurt by any move it makes. There are always going to be business cycles. The fed moves to offset and contain these cycles so they are not as extreme as they might otherwise be.
nicholas9999 4 years ago
@nicholas9999 - I would argue that one class benefits a majority of the time while one suffers a majority of the time. It is not random. I am not ready to hand the Fed a halo. They operate for the benefit of the member banks, the political class and the corporate plutocracy more often than the common man. They are not just the messenger. They are not neutral. This is the way I see it.
citizenBNW 4 years ago
citizen: As to the way deposits are classified, now you're talking about a specific gripe with the fed, and/or its member banks. I'm not sure what effect those classifications will have. Are you saying such reclassifications will have the effect of allowing banks to loan more money?? Not sure where you're going with that.
nicholas9999 4 years ago
@nicholas9999 - Yes. Across the board reclassification of demand deposits as time deposits. One has a reserve requirement and another does not. The end result is exactly that, to lend more money from the same size deposit thus leveraging the institution even further. Both my bank and credit union implemented the changes in 2Q2007.

McLaughlin is cool but that other fucker has no idea what he is talking about. How could 600 billion dollars of printed money to fight the iraq war not affect the US economy? Where does he think inflation comes from? What a FUCKING idiot.

Zuckerman is a tool.
The printing of money by the federal reserve which creates low interest rates, creates artificial inflation and increased credit surpluses. The low interest rates are what cause people, corporations and businesses to depend fully on debt in order to meet their needs.
