Celine Dion & Heart - Alone

Again, Big Sales don't mean a lot of Quality.

My favourit version of this song, along with Heart's version (that is unique too) is from a singer that is not very famous outside Europe (Floor Jansen - its is playing on my channel)... The fact that she doesn't sell a Lot is more related to her Recording company not Being a Huge Pop factory, and also because her style is not as commercial as Celine Dion, for exemple. IN FACT her Vocal Technique is better than Ann's and a LOT better than Celine's!

I heard her version, it's very good.

Her voice is very good, but not unique or edgy in any way and it's completely different to Celine style and technique wise, Celine is a belter, Floor isn't. Still, Celine has a far more interesting and powerful voice - and for fair comparision listen to Celine in her 20's and not in her late 30's-40's when she recorded Alone. So much better.

I write it as someone who likes Heart's version a lot more - Celine is a MUCH better singer than Ann vocally. Technique, volume, pitch, control, tone quality and diversity wise. You may not like her voice, but saying Ann is a better VOCALIST is absolutely ridiculous.

@NHK1111111111 Its ok that you enjoy Celine's vocal sound. BUT don't come to talk about her vocal technique! (Not saying Ann has great technique, but at least Ann's timbre is richer and connected between registers).

Celine has got an horrible tone quality. In fact her Head voice is thin and nasal, and when compared to her lower registers, its disconnected, almost falsetto. Chest voice belts are also forced, with bad support. She isn't also creative on Live vocal arrangements!

Her mix is excellent, her chest range is ridiculous and very naturally high and placement and support are perfection. Her head voice is absolutely fine, even though she doesn't use it very often it's definitely not thin.

I'm not a Celine fan at all - but her voice is out of this world. Ann's voice is weak, forced amd pitchy compared to hers. Sorry. You can use million singing terms (which I believe you don't fully understand) - facts are facts.

I keep my Opinon that Celine is Overrated, I also don't believe you when you say you are not a Celine fan, because you are tottaly exagerated in the way you talk about her!

@musicredshoes I know some Celine's songs are hard to sing, but there are female singers out there that can belt showing Less effort and being much more soulfull and creative in their interpretations (Aretha, Patti, Whitney at her prime, etc)

I never said Celine is an horrible singer, I just Think she is VERY Overrated. Celine should care less about screaming high notes (forcing her voice), and care more about interpretation with a natural timbre (on some french songs she comes closer to that).

@musicredshoes Finally, when it comes to Floor Jansen, She uses several techniques according to the repertoire she wants to sing (And she wasn't focusing on her classical skills when singing "Alone") , and if you didn't recognize her belt, then it prooves that is you who don't understand the "terms" (I do, cause I've got some studies on that), Or once again, it prooves you are really a Celine Fan!

Floor is much more versatile and with Better Techniques. She just doesn't sell as much as Celine!

I understand the terms and I'm a performer myself. I don't know what kind of "studying" you've had - but Floor is clearly not belting - but heavily mixing - in her live Alone performances.

Celine does lipsync about 5 songs in her concerts and I don't like it either, it's pure laziness and cheap.

And after naming Patti Labelle's belt as effortless (LMFAO) I think this discussion is over :) have a great week.

Patti oversings her songs, its true, but as a Belter, At her Prime, she could belt much higher than Celine, and it was Easy for her! (too bad she continued to oversing more as she got older). Celine isn't best in doing Anything. Inspite of being a good singer, there are always better ones in the genre!

@NHK1111111111 I'm replying to your comment about how Floor is singing. I agree. I'm a singer also. I can hear her upper mix to head voice being used on the "power" (F#6) notes. It just sounds like belting due to the way she is putting emphasis on those notes. Giving it a chest sound to it making it sound like it belting. Plus it's impossible to Belt out a F6 (that's 2 octaves above middle C on piano). Too high in a female singers range.

I don't think anyone would be able to do a better version of this song than Heart, they were/are the total package.. Celine Dion has an awesome voice and is the caliber of singer that could pull off a decent cover of this song IMHO.. She does do it justice. But I am still firmly in the HEART Camp.. Sounds like Celine was just doing a tribute and giving props to a band that she digs as much as we all do.. Good On Her.

Heart's version was #1 for three weeks and the #2 song for the year in 1987. Celine's version didn't even crack the Hot 100. It only reached #86 on the "bubbling under" chart. Enough said.

I'm not someone who normally listens to Celine Dion, but I have to say that she has an amazing vocal instrument. Kudos to her for singing this extremely difficult song. Her voice isn't rock and roll enough for the song, but she could probably make it more rock and roll if she wanted to. Celine's voice is superior but in my opinion it's not a matter of pure tecnicque, not for a song like this at least.

The point is that listening to Ann's interpretation gives me the creeps, listening to Celine's one leave me like "ok, great voice but I don't feel this song".

That's why I will always remember this song as a song by Heart whereas probably in two weeks I will forget that it was also performed by Celine Dion.
