I had a black '69 Formal Roof Cobra. It had a "R" Code 428 Super Cobra Jet with Ram-Air in it. There were no Torino or Fairlane markings on it, only Cobra emblems inside and out. No decals on the fenders, although in high school I had one of those decals on the back of a clipboard. In a '69 Hot Rod magazine there was a 2 page ad with formal top and a sportsroof both in the same ad. I also had a 428 SCJ 4 speed Drag-Pak '69 Mach 1 Mustang and later a '70 429 Cobra Jet Torino blue w/lazer stripes
This car is actually a prototype, has a red '68 Torino GT interior, which accounts for the shifter and flat pad steering wheel... Red was never a option, Cobras shared interior with the base Fairlane which had black, blue, and nugget gold avail only... Also the full blackout grille and Cobra decals did not make production... The decals are possibly debatable, but in 38 years of ownership, I'm yet to verify one with factory decals...
Yes the '69s are Cobras, gained Torino status in '70-'71

Thanks for pointing those details out. I was just reading some a Brookland Books series "Ford Fairlane 56-70" which had three tests of the "Ford Cobra." I also noted a Chevy Power quarterly from 1973, in an anti Ford article note that there was criticism of Ford for using the same name Shelby used for regular production Ford.
The tires always looked to small on these, but that can be easily remedied. Still, I love these things; much better than all the cookie-cutter Chevelles out there.
@icrails nah its all correct, the grille in the scoop doesnt look right b/c of the lighting and the steering wheel was an option...either rim blow or that one in the advertisement....i believe lol
I'm always looking for new ads about Torino's since I own a 69 Sportsroof, and I haven't seen this one yet. Where did you find it? Are there copies available?
@abbeysdad I got a lot of Ford sales stuff from Helms in Dertroit in 1975. so I gave a lot of stuff . I might make up DVD's of these ads. Watch my channel

I've been a roll with this today.
Notice that nowhere in the ad does the VO say "Torino Cobra."
This car is called, simply, "Cobra."
Evidence:
:53 "Cobra, pure engineering." - not Torino Cobra.
1.27: This car has special Cobra decals instead of Torino badges.
1:51 "Sportsroof Cobra, hottest thing on the road, with a price to match."
2:06 "Torino GT Sportsroof, Cobra sting, with a more sophisticated flavor."
If the Cobra was a Torino, why didn't he say "Torino Cobra?
I rest my case.

Sportsroof is an enigma. From certain angles it just looks like distilled sexy. Others make it look ungainly.
