Remember the glitch that enabled you to drive 'cross-country' after you backed out of the van? I liked doing that just before the bridge, as it also worked for driving over water. Trouble was, if the helicopter bombed you while you were doing this, the game shut off and reset itself.
Great game I'm glad I got drunk and started watching old school arcade game videos. Gonna hook up the PS2 and play the midway classics I bought for 10 bucks from gamestop a few years ago.
I gotta say, your driving skills need sharpening. As someone who played this game a lot in the 1980s, I know a key part of survival is moving with traffic, not darting jerkily between cars. Be mindful of the traffic, change speed and course smoothly, and you'll do fine even on icy roads.
Strangely enough, this is actually transferable to real-world driving.
Did y'all know that the "Bulletproof Bully" isn't entirely bulletproof? If you have the oil, use it on a Bully when it's right alongside another car. Depending on the Bully's position, instead of sliding off the road, it will straighten out but will keep on wobbling back and forth. That's when you slow down, get behind it, and give it a round of machine gun fire. While it's wobbling, the vulnerable sides become exposed and once hit, the "Bulletproof Bully" will catch on fire and burn up.
The icy roads ahead are a thorn. Worst part 4 me is reentering the road after being removed from Weapons Van. That action alone costs me several lives....
does anyone remember on the shockwave website that this and several other classic midway games were playable on their site? for some reason they got rid of them and now the only one left is the crappy water elephant version
Love this game. Feel like Sean Connery, Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan all at the same time. My PS2 all-time score is 80,445. Never tire of the game. Thanks for posting.
@rexbasior It is so hard to get into that "zone". I mean getting 37-40,000 isn't that hard. But all the stars have to align perfectly to consistantly not hit a civilian car or as a boat not ram yourself into the shore. But this game is sooooooo fun. Best wishes.
~ 2:37 one of the early great driving games in the industry is made special by the addition of jazzy, synth-organ solos - that are seemingly never repeated even after hundreds of plays. If you could have somehow avoided that helo bomb, you would have an uninterrupted jam playing instead of the 'death ending' awkwardly smacked in the middle of it. Other than that - great job posting this essential piece of Americana!

Back in the arcade days you would see a pair of lightning bolts shoot out of the back of the car and a thump thump thump sound when you have it floored.

If you don't crash and die- earn TWO BONUS CARS if you hit 18000 before the timer runs out- true story
Thanks for a look back at the past- I own one of these 'real machines' still under repair. SH is out at there at the classic game expos and worth a look.
what version is this? It looks very close to the arcade version, however, there are the weapons light-ups on the side. I play the MAME version and never know what weapons I have unless I used them.
@alfabdall this is on the ps2 from a disc called 'midway arcade classics.' the disc has about 20 arcade games on there that are pretty identical to the originals from what i can tell.
lol around 84' my brother and i used to spend HOURS before school playing this game.. One day the owner of the arcade literally grabbed us and threw us both out LOL
I've always loved playing this game on my NES every single day back when I was a kid! Arcade version was more dynamic, but the NES version was the only arcade-to-home console port that was near arcade-accurate.
ohh my god :) i turned on big screen and i almost thought i was playing the videogame spyhunter :) hahaha i was nervous...then remembered its only a video ...we cant control the video :) i really miss this game
Love this game. Loved it even more playing it in tex before heading off to the prom. A real Roger Moore fantasy moment with my pretty date sitting in the booth with me.
Nope. The closest you come to an ending is when the road is perpetually ice. Even when you go out on the boat you have to avoid ice flows as well as depth charges and Doc Torpedo.
the game does not end i played the playstation version my top scores are in the 200,000pt range you get a free guy evrey 60k in pts. Iit just keeps going from ice to boat to land depending which way your fork. it starts to flood the road with cars around 6 or so not to hard to handle in the dry land but when it get icy very very hard...
LOVE this game, the NES one i had was lacking compared to this, no more than 2 cars at a time attackiong you :X on the arcade i saw four at one point.
I wish you could find these machines nowadays. The original SpyHunter is one of the best arcade games to ever come out of the 80s. I can't remember the last time I actually played it though.
You can find these games nowadays. In fact, I have one sitting in my gameroom right now. Classic arcade games are mostly just collected now rather than being in arcades. It helps a lot if you know some basic electronics and troubleshooting skills because the game electronics are now over 30 years old.
@IlyushinIL2 Oddly enough, the best place to find these machines is either at Theme parks (like Disney or CedarPoint, both had a Spyhunter) or at Funspot Arcade.
@MrHiu2 Interesting. I knew they had to be out there somewhere, especially in the hands of collectors and the like, but it seems like all the public places I go to are devoid of them. It's a shame, since all the old arcade classics were exactly that, classic, and yet I've only seen maybe two or three real Spyhunters in my life.
I played this game in the arcade booth in a tuxedo with my prom date. Really felt like Roger Moore 007! Had our picture taken inside & outside the booth. Still made it to the prom with time to kill.
Could someone tell me where I can find this original game for a PC? It is out on all the game systems but I can't find it for PC's. I have the new version (spy hunter 2) for my PC but the original seems unattainable.
thanks for posting this! the music is amazing, it is the reason i spent numerous quarters in the arcade just so i could hear those funky jams - like the ones at 2:245:50 does anyone know whether those are completely random? because, each one seems to be unique and doesn't follow a pattern?
Muy bueno, que tiempos al salir de clase e ir al bar de debajo de casa de un amigo a jugar. Cuantos chavales le robarian monedas a sus madres para jugar al spy hunter...

Back in the 80's, I was the master of Spy Hunter.
It was so painful to watch this player make all of those mistakes.
The ice is sooo easy because a very simple tap at the right angle sends them cars into a slide they can't recover.
Also, there is a trick to get rid of the Enforcer forever (when you cross the bridge, park with the Enforcer and he will die forever).

kryss119 4 years ago
You don't have to play the boat part.
The trick is to delay the Weapons van by riding on the grassy side on the far right - once you cross the broken bridge, get back on the road.
If you time the Weapons van, you can get two vans in a row.
Always shoot your missile when the helicopter is directly over you - instant hit - no delay.
