  • i used to love two car games at chuckee cheeses....spyhunter and road blaster

  • THIS GAME ALWAYS MADE ME NERVOUS AT THE ARCADES :) I HAD PLENTY OF QUARTERS IN MY POCKETS , HEHEHE

    I LOVED SPYHUNTER

  • Great run through... I have this on the Gamecube, and it is very hard to play... much harder than the actual arcade.

  • juicebox

  • Remember the glitch that enabled you to drive 'cross-country' after you backed out of the van? I liked doing that just before the bridge, as it also worked for driving over water. Trouble was, if the helicopter bombed you while you were doing this, the game shut off and reset itself.

  • "I was the 1st place man everytime I played this game back in the day! Excellent post!"

  • Dat 8-bit guitar solo.

  • @CottagePeas SWEEEEeeEeeeT!!!!!

  • can this game actually be finished?

  • @shotgunwound search Paul Dean, he's played it for 12 hours on one credit.

  • Great game I'm glad I got drunk and started watching old school arcade game videos. Gonna hook up the PS2 and play the midway classics I bought for 10 bucks from gamestop a few years ago.

  • they really need to put more retro collections on the ps3

  • I gotta say, your driving skills need sharpening. As someone who played this game a lot in the 1980s, I know a key part of survival is moving with traffic, not darting jerkily between cars. Be mindful of the traffic, change speed and course smoothly, and you'll do fine even on icy roads.

Strangely enough, this is actually transferable to real-world driving.

  • Did y'all know that the "Bulletproof Bully" isn't entirely bulletproof? If you have the oil, use it on a Bully when it's right alongside another car. Depending on the Bully's position, instead of sliding off the road, it will straighten out but will keep on wobbling back and forth. That's when you slow down, get behind it, and give it a round of machine gun fire. While it's wobbling, the vulnerable sides become exposed and once hit, the "Bulletproof Bully" will catch on fire and burn up.

  • 106,590. And 96,000 is 002.

  • Apologies if this is a stupid question, but where did you get this/ play this game? I've been looking for it for ages.

  • @TieLandProductions it's on the PS2. there's a disc you can buy called "midway arcade classics" and it has about 25 arcade games on it.

  • @TieLandProductions

I believe that it is on the Midway Arcade Treasures vol 1 for PS2. I want it too.

  • The icy roads ahead are a thorn. Worst part 4 me is reentering the road after being removed from Weapons Van. That action alone costs me several lives....

  • @CaptainBuckRogers aaaarghhh... okay fine.

  • does anyone remember on the shockwave website that this and several other classic midway games were playable on their site? for some reason they got rid of them and now the only one left is the crappy water elephant version

  • Love this game. Feel like Sean Connery, Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan all at the same time. My PS2 all-time score is 80,445. Never tire of the game. Thanks for posting.

  • @CaptainBuckRogers hmm. you just gave me a goal to beat. i'll work on 80,445 and then take a shot at finnboy67's record.

  • @rexbasior It is so hard to get into that "zone". I mean getting 37-40,000 isn't that hard. But all the stars have to align perfectly to consistantly not hit a civilian car or as a boat not ram yourself into the shore. But this game is sooooooo fun. Best wishes.

  • @rexbasior

lol a decent score back in the day in the arcades was over 300k.

  • cool!

  • 96000 is my record

  • @finnboy67 Wow. 80, 445 is mine...

  • the real arcade version also had weapon lights....they were on the actual cabinet though which is why you dont see them in MAME versions..

  • i made 280K on the original sit-down version of the game .

Those fat blue cars that would ram you always reminded me of the

    70s movie " The Car "

  • hehehe played this growin up on a atari 800 xl meeeeeeeeeeeeeep meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep screeeeech loading.......

  • ~ 2:37 one of the early great driving games in the industry is made special by the addition of jazzy, synth-organ solos - that are seemingly never repeated even after hundreds of plays. If you could have somehow avoided that helo bomb, you would have an uninterrupted jam playing instead of the 'death ending' awkwardly smacked in the middle of it. Other than that - great job posting this essential piece of Americana!

  • Aren't those civilian cars just the BIGGEST pain in the ass?!!! Always in the way!

  • Good run- good cap for the home systems.

Home systems dont allow full gas.

Back in the arcade days you would see a pair of lightning bolts shoot out of the back of the car and a thump thump thump sound when you have it floored.

    One secret

If you don't crash and die- earn TWO BONUS CARS if you hit 18000 before the timer runs out- true story

Thanks for a look back at the past- I own one of these 'real machines' still under repair. SH is out at there at the classic game expos and worth a look.

  • Does anyone know is this can be found for PS3? Maybe as part of an Arcade Classics package/

  • what version is this? It looks very close to the arcade version, however, there are the weapons light-ups on the side. I play the MAME version and never know what weapons I have unless I used them.

  • @alfabdall this is on the ps2 from a disc called 'midway arcade classics.' the disc has about 20 arcade games on there that are pretty identical to the originals from what i can tell.

  • lol around 84' my brother and i used to spend HOURS before school playing this game.. One day the owner of the arcade literally grabbed us and threw us both out LOL

  • good show mate

  • I've always loved playing this game on my NES every single day back when I was a kid! Arcade version was more dynamic, but the NES version was the only arcade-to-home console port that was near arcade-accurate.

    Great run.

    -kidThunder

  • ohh my god :) i turned on big screen and i almost thought i was playing the videogame spyhunter :) hahaha i was nervous...then remembered its only a video ...we cant control the video :) i really miss this game

  • Takes me back. We played on a BBC Basic. Green screen, but I swear the PG theme was better quality..

  • smack that car out of the way! I want to do that for real sometimes =D

  • i love this game

  • the end of vid (thinks: ive nearly reached my high score - got one car left)

starts - veers drunkenly off road and crashes...

neighbours say-"that's the loudest profanity i've ever heard!'

    pure gaming bliss!

  • haha! you said it exactly.

  • very tight video! i always preferred playing in the sit down cabinet version.

  • Love this game. Loved it even more playing it in tex before heading off to the prom. A real Roger Moore fantasy moment with my pretty date sitting in the booth with me.

  • okay, now that would've been an awesome prom! perfect in a tux

  • the music gets pretty awesome around the 6 min mark!

  • Yeah, the ice levels kick my ass every time! You're about at my level, my best score is 85 K

  • good playing. i'd never seen the icy roads area before.

  • does this game ever end ?

  • Nope. The closest you come to an ending is when the road is perpetually ice. Even when you go out on the boat you have to avoid ice flows as well as depth charges and Doc Torpedo.

  • the game does not end i played the playstation version my top scores are in the 200,000pt range you get a free guy evrey 60k in pts. Iit just keeps going from ice to boat to land depending which way your fork. it starts to flood the road with cars around 6 or so not to hard to handle in the dry land but when it get icy very very hard...

  • The NES version of this game was insanely hard. Its like once your time ran out, you die the second you get hit or crash.

  • LOVE this game, the NES one i had was lacking compared to this, no more than 2 cars at a time attackiong you :X on the arcade i saw four at one point.

  • About 10 years ago my dad bought one of the original cabinets. Freaking awesome.

  • Hell yes. Many hours of mine burned on these roads.

  • Damn, I wish I was around at the time when there was an arcade version.

  • I wish you could find these machines nowadays. The original SpyHunter is one of the best arcade games to ever come out of the 80s. I can't remember the last time I actually played it though.

  • @IlyushinIL2

You can find these games nowadays. In fact, I have one sitting in my gameroom right now. Classic arcade games are mostly just collected now rather than being in arcades. It helps a lot if you know some basic electronics and troubleshooting skills because the game electronics are now over 30 years old.

  • @IlyushinIL2 Oddly enough, the best place to find these machines is either at Theme parks (like Disney or CedarPoint, both had a Spyhunter) or at Funspot Arcade.

  • @MrHiu2 Interesting. I knew they had to be out there somewhere, especially in the hands of collectors and the like, but it seems like all the public places I go to are devoid of them. It's a shame, since all the old arcade classics were exactly that, classic, and yet I've only seen maybe two or three real Spyhunters in my life.

  • that's quite a run!

    thanks for uploading

  • Damn! Where's the drive-by limos?

  • My fav arcade of all time! i dont remember, but can you stay in boat mode for a while, and not have to change back into car mode?

  • I played this game in the arcade booth in a tuxedo with my prom date. Really felt like Roger Moore 007! Had our picture taken inside & outside the booth. Still made it to the prom with time to kill.

  • Seeing this classic video game really took me back to the days of parachute pants and break-dancing! God bless you!

  • how dare u burn my brain with those horribal images

  • I was a holy terror when it came to playing Spy Hunter in the arcade & yet for some reason, i was all thumbs in the home version.

    Go figure...

  • Could someone tell me where I can find this original game for a PC? It is out on all the game systems but I can't find it for PC's. I have the new version (spy hunter 2) for my PC but the original seems unattainable.

  • thanks for posting this! the music is amazing, it is the reason i spent numerous quarters in the arcade just so i could hear those funky jams - like the ones at 2:24 5:50 does anyone know whether those are completely random? because, each one seems to be unique and doesn't follow a pattern?

  • i've wondered that too. if it is completely random we ought to have computers do all our free-form jazz from now on.

  • I want more audio!! We're trying to learn the tunes!!

  • yeah! no doubt!

  • Back in the 80's, I was the master of Spy Hunter.

It was so painful to watch this player make all of those mistakes.

The ice is sooo easy because a very simple tap at the right angle sends them cars into a slide they can't recover.

Also, there is a trick to get rid of the Enforcer forever (when you cross the bridge, park with the Enforcer and he will die forever).

  • You not go to spyhunter, you let spyhunter come to you, you are wise rexbaisor-san.

  • the music is just sick!!

  • Why do you say that?

  • uh slang man.....i'm saying the music is great

  • OK, I see. in that case I agree!

  • Muy bueno, que tiempos al salir de clase e ir al bar de debajo de casa de un amigo a jugar. Cuantos chavales le robarian monedas a sus madres para jugar al spy hunter...

  • Thank you for making this video! It feels so good to see and hear this game again :^)

  • This was my fav game when I was a kid! Apparently there's no end to the game, it goes forever. If I remember correctly, the boat part I could never get past (I played the game a K-mart or something all the time).

  • You don't have to play the boat part.

The trick is to delay the Weapons van by riding on the grassy side on the far right - once you cross the broken bridge, get back on the road.

If you time the Weapons van, you can get two vans in a row.

Always shoot your missile when the helicopter is directly over you - instant hit - no delay.

  • I remember playing this at a 7-Eleven by my school and at Chuck E. Cheese's.

I also remember the schoolyard debates that if you get far enough the car can turn into a jet or helicopter.

  • i remember hearing that rumor too. as far as i know it's totally false and the game just goes until it runs out of memory or something.

  • regarding that myth, this isn't true in Spy Hunter, however when Sega made Action Fighter in 1986, that myth became true in AF

  • i cant even get past the green forest 2 part

  • lol I remember this game. Damn brings back old memories. I got to the Icy road once. But I kept getting fucked up in the boat a lot. For some reasons it was hard to steer that bitch!

  • niiiiiiiiiice

  • lol...the icy roads as far as i ever madeit..i use to get kicked out of the 7-11 by my house for yelling when id lose

  • That's funny. I remember playing this at a 7-11 back in the day. They should put a arcade game back in each one as a promotion.

  • uhh if you are stilplaying this how come you didnt beat the game by now ?

  • I remember this game in the arcade. it had a steering wheel like a fork shape not a proper steering wheel, with buttons on the handles to shoot or oil slick other cars.

  • I suck at this through the PS2 version (Midway Arcade Treasures) i can't even get to the water.

  • great run, not so great at the very end. not that i could do near as good

  • oh what did they do on that psx version - the gas pedal is not maxed out :( nothing like the origina cab.

good gameplay and cool video though...

    2 thumbs up

be sure to check out the sh vid on my page... cya

    -hawk
