Like all great players - I never realize how great great they are until they are gone. There is one exception- I was so sick of having Jordan shoved down my throat I was glad to see him go. The Doctor was great and as time goes by and I see the next truckload of bums come in -I miss his class, his highlights and his game. There will never be another.
Somebody said "Moses was pretty much the Shaq of his day, " An insult to Malone. Malone was better than Shaq , as was Wilt, Russell , Kareem , Olajuwon - just to name a few.
If Malone had spent his entire career in the NBA rather a lot of it in the ABA he would have received more recognition. I remember looking in the Wash Post and seeing how many offensive rebounds Moses had (a lot).
He was rarely on tv while at Utah - but he could run like a deer and was the fastest guy down the court !
Nice of Malone to give Doc the credit for their title season, but most fans know they don't win that title without Moses. Utterly dominant boards beast, Moses averaged 15 a game that year to go with 24 points a game
If the 6ers coulda won without Moses they woulda done it the previous 3 times
Moses was pretty much the Shaq of his day, and like young Kobe, Dr J doesn't get that first NBA title without his Shaq
@PorkFrog U HAVE A POINT BUT DRJ BEST TEAMATE WAS D.DAWKINS UNTIL1983(MOSES,TONEY AND CHEEKS GREAT SEASON)EVEN THOUGH LED THEM BYHIMSELFIN 2 NBA FINALS AND FACED 2 TIMES IN FINALS VS THE LAKERS 3 HOF(MAGIC,JABBAR,MCADOO) AND NBA ALL-STARS WILKES AND NIXON!ALSO FACED BOSTON IN CONFERENCE FINALS 3 TIMEST!HEY HAD 4 HOF (BIRD,MCHALE,PARISH,ARCHIBALD) AND 1982 NBA FINALS MVP C.MAXWELL!THE ONLY TIME THAT WERE DEFEATED(4-3) BY THEM WAS IN 1981 AND BOSTON WON THE CHAMPIONSHIP AGAINST MOSES HOUSTON!
@AdreasTheGreat You bring up what a lot of people don't consider: J had ferocious competition in the early 80's for that title.
I just wanted to point out that Moses was an animal on the boards and MVP for a reason. I can tell you know your b-ball, so you know that the Celts game was controlling the boards with that badass front court to make up for being a slower team, and Moses balanced that out. 15 RPG a HUGE #.
yer right, once Mo got there Toney and the other Mo stepped it up. Great team
@PorkFrog U ARE TOTALLY RIGHT,ESPECIALLY IN 1981 76ERS HAD BETTER FG% BUT SOUNDLY LOST THE REBOUNDS,THE SERIES(4-3) AND IN MY OPINION THE NBA TITLE!HOUSTON WAS A VERY GOOD TEAM(MOSES,MURPHY) BUT I THINK WAS A STEP LOWER FROM CELTICS,76ERS AND LAKERS!MOSES NOT ONLY IS ONE OF THE BEST REB.EVER BUT THE BEST OFF.REB.EVER!
the "Docta", one of those true ambassador's. he articulated things not understood by the basketball establishment. perhaps most sadly no one assumed that legacy. not mike, not magic. everyone after were just commodities
The Original G O A T He saved the NBA. All players have Dr J to thank for allowing them to be creative and being able to believe that their imagination could be performed on the court. Thanks, Dr. J
@ChariotMan5 -says "DAMN Not Even MJ GOT Paised Like THat!
MJ already was praised too much. Most people fail to realize that Jordan never won a championship until Kareem retired. He never even played in a final against a Hall of Fame center. ESPN and the media has blown him out of proportion.
Many , who know nothing about hoops, want to call Jordan the greatest. If that is the case , why does he only have 6.1 rebounds per game? Wilt averaged 22.9 rpg.
@42marisol1 I agree. Jordan doesn't own the most points in the league that honor belongs to Kareem. He didn't win the most rings I believe Bill Russell has that title. Infact Jordan has only one more than Magic, the same amount of rings that Kareem has and one less than Robert Horry. Hakeem holds the record of most block shots. Most points scored in a game belongs to Wilt. He doesn't own the most career triple doubles that belongs to Oscar Robertson. And Dr. J changed the face of the game not MJ
@Marakulous43 - says " Then why do ppl like Magic, Kareem, Isiah, Dr. J, Larry Bird say he the greatest of all time??? Damn hater."
You never play against the best - Wilt - like every player you named it is easy to name somebody you played against - hence Mr.6.2 rebounds per game (Jordan) can be your boy and you can be just another sheep. If you still need the basketball to score then you might be interested in Wilt who scored the same but got 16 more rebounds pg. I like having the ball.
@42marisol1 Stop riding Chamberlain's dick. We all know you're his fanboy okay? Why does Michael only have 6 rebounds per game and Chamberlain 22? Because Wilt is a fucking center you dumbass. Stop hating on Mike. I agree, he's not the best player but making your point by comparing REBOUNDS of CHAMBERLAIN who was a CENTER over SEVEN feet to Mike who is an SG.

I love his voice! Its funny unlike Jordan the Doctor didn't come out of retirement three times just because a new player was getting too much shine.

Julius had a lot of wear and tear on him after 5 years in the ABA-that's almost 1/3 of his pro career.
I remember him playing hurt a lot and fighting thru it and still getting 20-25.
Had to love the Dr, one of those guys you'd tune in just to see. Style, humility and athleticism in spades.
what sports is all about, seeing guys like him

Most spectacular player but never showboated.
Star on a team of mostly average players but never complained that he needed help.
Julius always played hard... He won with humility and lost with dignity.
Today's athletes could learn a lot from Mr. Julius Winfield Erving's example.
My favorite player ever.
