i reckon buckley and hird are just as good as each other they did what they did best was take the game by the throat and say dont argue and when the played against each other pure clash of the titans and im a one eye magpie surporter but cant take away how good hird was there both legends of the game
Every video I see of Buckley he only ran into 50 and kicked goals never did a crazy goal and never took opponents on!! Ablett snr never held a mark but u have to remember he was coming down a long way!!! But had exceptional skill on both sides of the body!!! James hird is clearly the ultimate sportsman he played any position on any opponent and played it very well would take on players win or loose and turn a game on it's head nearly week after week true number 1 champ of the game!! Carey rocci
very surprised to see people saying hird was made better by those around him...complete opposite. How can you say that about someone who's name is synonymous with winning games of his own boot. Definitely the question of who is better b/w voss, bucks and hird is a matter of opinion and changes from person to person. I put Hird ahead as he missed the majority of what should of been the 3 prime years of his career ( 97-99), but i am an essendon supporter
ive seen all of these players play, and without a doubt gary ablett snr is the best to ever play, his skills were unmatched, james hird is a close second, the guys all class, buckley would be the most over rated player and nothing more than a Media made champion,,, he collected high possesions but did nothing more, chris judd is another of the media made champs, neither are game winners like abblet and hird, and the rest , just basic players nothing special
@neozzyinu Robert Harvey, Shane Crawford, Mark Ricciuto and Michael Voss are basic players? I would sneak Carey into the Hird/Ablett Snr catergoy (however you want to rank them). It's a testiment to Hird and Ablett Snr that they make other great players of the era look like the average player. Doesn't mean the others are crap.
would you say buckley was better than hird if buckley led his team to a premiership? When James Hird kicked in the forward line he had Mathew Lloyd and Scott Lucas feeding off him and Buckley had Anthony Rocca and Chris Tarrant.
HIRD WAS A GREAT PLAYER IN A TEAM OF GREAT PLAYERS!!!
@haza2494 only partially true really, hird won the brownlow in 1996 when those two were still young and essendon had no outstanding forward....hird was arguably known most for his ability to win games off his own boot
i thnk hirds a good player you cant say his not, but buckley i thnk is much more important to a team, a 60m pass to the chest i mean who can do that these days.
lol, household names where ? In a few non descript Melbourne suburbs and unimportant satellite cities......Christ u wallys take the cake, proof positive that Australia is not perfect. What a ridiculous excuse for a sport, 150 years of history lol, talk about pump out the bullshit, where else is it popular ? Pack of bogans
I would say you would of had to put kevin bartlett in there, and i agree that hird is not number 1, he was good but can not hold a light to gary ablett snr.
Tony lockett is definitely in the top 5.....hell the greatest footballer isnt even in there, CHAZ BROWNLOW guys cmon, spose it is hard to get footage of him, and it is from the last 15 years but great vid cant wait to watch my mighty tigers play freo today im already wearin my scarf and guernsey
Is that 10 in order of who you think has been the best? Because if it is, I can't begin to comprehend how the hell Hird is #1. Don't get me wrong, he was an incredible player, but there's no way he could match Carey or Ablett (and I can't bring myself to put him on the same level as Voss or Buckley, either). I think it should have been as follows: 1. Carey 2. Abblet Sn. 3. Silvagni 4. Voss 5. Buckley 6. Hird 7. Harvey 8. Lockett 9. Scott West 10. Chris Grant
obviously you're an essendon hater.. hird is 10x's than bucks he has the instincts to know where the ball is going befor he even gave it a thought he was magic, bucks was average.
and lloyd will be number 1 if it came to your list.. even though i think the best player of all time is tony lockett
no, i'm not an essendon hater. i think lloyd has been an incredible player, and that hird was even more incredible, just not as much as people say. i think it's more ridiculous to say that buckley is AVERAGE than for me to say hird is less incredible than a very select few players.
Mate your kidding Hird and Voss are on a different level compared the Buckley. Hird had more skill than Voss but Voss was a gun. Your crazy if you think Hird wasn't better than Buckley.
Hird was a big time player. He shone in vital parts of vital games, and got noticed because of it. He was a great player who played for great teams, whereas I think Buckley struggled and didn't get enough recognition due to the fact he played in some very subpar Collingwood sides. Voss, like Hird, gained a lot of recognition for playing in a good side, but unlike Hird, I don't think he had any undeserved praise. I can justify people's arguement as Voss being better than Bucks, but not Hird.
Hird was a vital part of why Essendon was a very good side. If Buckely was a good as Hird he should of done the same. And Buckely did play in two grand finals remember but no he was not close to Hird.
Of course Hird was a vital part, he was their captain and a very good player. But Buckley was much more vital to Collingwood's success. He won the Norm Smith in a losing team, which pretty much summed up his career: a dominant player in a team that just wasn't good enough. Hird was surrounded by great players. Who'd Buckley have with him? Shane Woewodin? Steven Mckey rucking? Rupert Betheras? Buckley carried Collingwood, whereas Hird was a key cog for Essendon.
Yeah Voss had guns around him as well. Just because Buckely may of carried Collingwood, it doesn't mean he was better than Hird. I still think that Hird was a much better player than Buckely. Who do you support?
Collingwood, which'll make it sound as if I'm very biased and hate Essendon (which I do), but I'm able to admit there were better players than Buckley, and there are better Essendon players than Collingwood players - I'd take most Bombers over Cloke any day. But I just don't think Hird was ever as good as Buckley.
i think you have forgotten a person by the name of Chris Grant who is games record holder for the Footscray Football Club/ Western Bulldogs with 341 games
tbh gary ablett jnr is far more skillful than judd but thats my opinion, he has silky skills and racks up 35+ posis a week and is untaggable. judd is an extremely good player but nowhere near the skill of abletts. also he manages that amount of disposal with bartel, ling, selwood and others in the midfield
i must say that gary ablett Jr should not be on the list, what has he achieved other than a grand final win? and this is my opinion, michael voss should be higher on the list, he captained 3 premierships in a row and won a brownlow medal. why isnt tony lockett on there? surely he did enough to be on a legends list
i agree, gaz ablett jnr shouldnt be there, and neither should judd, simply because they are still playing.
That being said depending on when it was mate, neither should crawf, but now that he has retired maybe he should be.
And if you are going to have gaz ablett snr, where are lockett and dunstall? they both have far better goal kicking records that gaz snr, which is what a full forward is known for.
Mark Ricciuto should be higher then what he is, wayne carey shouldnt even be on there he was only a forward, hird is deffently the best player of the past 20 years wish i got to watch him play again
Rubbish. Top ten in any order:
Voss, Ablett, Ablett, Carey, Judd, Hird, Harvey, Black, Goodes, Ricciuto

another good example is Voss vs Akermanis. Voss by far the better player but Akermanis had this magic that Voss never had
huwgojones 2 years ago
I have to agree with "pre31194" buckley was an awesome player, fantastic in every measurable area but hird had the
x-factor. He had the flair that is rarely seen other than in many of our aboriginal players and some like gary ablett snr but he he was consitent

Wayne Carey would definitely not be the only forward from the last 15 years that is worth of the list.
