Hitler was NOT a good military planner; he originally succeeded somewhat due only to the brilliance of Nazi generals, such as Rommel. Hitler himself was horrible at making war decisions (like his sudden attack of Russia despite their previous treaty). Later on, he became very delusional, as attested by the people (secretaries, surviving officials, all very loyal at the time) who were in the bunker with him.

@CylindricalWhistle The sudden attack on Russia was the Generals fault. Hitler planed a 2 way attack on Moscow (one from south and east). THis would of made it harder for Russia to defend as they couldnt destroy land as the did on the eastern front. Hitler took a few weeks off cos of disentry and so the Generals used there own plan of all on one directon whilst Hitler was away. The Nazis put traps in buildings near the end of the war for when the land was occupied, this is not a evil act.

The generals in fact drafted a paper trying to dissuade Hitler from his attacks due to economic reasons. Hitler did not listen, and proceeded anyway, anticipating that there would be a fast victory. There was not.

In 1933 when they got into power they new they would be a war at one point so the drew up alliances. I.E with the Uk to stop armerican geting a foot hold which failed. They always new Russia would attack. In 1939 soon as Germany invaded poland, Russia did the same taking 1m Polish prisoners including a gerneral. So they didnt realy have a choice after that.

Hitler, for random ideological reasons, decided to attack Russia, entirely of his own volition. That was his choice; Stalin did not want to fight Hitler; there were no political reasons to attack Russia at all. Hitler chose to do so, even though numerous people warned him that that would be disastrous for Germany.
Therefore, I believe Hitler to be at blame.

The old enemy was at the gates and they were winning agaisnt the UK. So it was the perfect time to invade as there was no US. The main Russian army was on the east coast defending against japan so attacking when there army wasnt near moscow was the right time. They got into striking distance of Moscow so wasnt a total fail.

Go to the library, check it out, and read it--there, Hitler writes explicitly that Germans need more Lebensraum (living room), and that the only way to get it would be to take it from the Russians. He wanted to take land from Russia. You say the enemy was at the gates--really? The Russians had no intention of attacking Germany. It was Hitler who initiated every battle--in his annexing of the Sudetenland, invasion of Poland, of Russia, etc.
