Fan of all these guys as well. Mick Barr just doesnt know how to let shit breathe, ever. He's not a musician who gives equal value to both silence and noise. I mean, that's his MO and that's fine, you know what you're getting when you go see him, but I would agree that GENERALLY SPEAKING one guy jamming on 32nds constantly does not give alot of room for the other guys to do much but try to play louder.
god i hate reading youtube reviews on free music. everyone's an authority in their own mind. go listen to coldplay. go on, they wont ever change anything or challenge your ears. while your at it, go see Mall Cop and U2 in 3D. These guys stick their reputations on the line to make YOU music and all everyone does is bitch. You think their in this for the money??? HAHAHAHA Well, don't want to keep you any longer, the line for your barcode tattoo is growing.
I like a couple of Zorn CDs and went to see him at Tonic. Although Zorn himself is playful, the crowd was really pretentious, and the music almost unlistenable. I really wanted to like it, but could not.
Ditto this video.
I think it has nothing to do with an open mind, but rather the ability to discern signal from noise.
good piece of music , zorn can be very boring and useless , but here he put good vibes and of course Graves supply his famous big chaos beat that sounds fantastic - but it just shows that alot of people can make avant garde music but few can do it with the spirit of people like graves .
Actually, it's like modern art. I can't say this piece has good chord progressions, melody or anything like that. It does have some unique motifs and rythm that distinguishes it from random notes playing - but it somewhat sounds like arpeggiators controlled by LFO oscillators. Doesn't impress me musically, but it's fun to watch.

no. i know good music and i know that this is just a bunch of gay noise that you cant really hear ANY FLOW. If this shit was good then i could be the best player of this crap... its not hard to play fast and play anything randomly.
I agree that this is compelling at points, but I can't help but think that John Zorn and Laswell are just not that inventive. Zorn overuses screechy harmonics to the point where it's like "alright man, we get it! now do something else!" Laswell is just boring and predictable and should stick to working on dub projects, which he's actually really damned good at. I'd rather see an excellent drummer like Graves play with other musicians.
Obviously you don't have much of an open mind and cannot appreciate truly experimental and improvised music. I would have paid $100 to see it. One of the better shows I've seen in a while.
That saxphone kinda kills it for me... Its just so so abrasive... might have been better in person i dont know

Who is the batteur??
And what is this group?
kadamonra 4 years ago
Milford Graves is on the drum set! I believe it was just an ad hoc grouping, although they've all played together in various incarnations...

actually you would be surprised.
it's easy to play not-so-fast and determinantly.
random is in the ear of the beholder.
There! The interplay I'm hearing at 2:00 is that builds is compelling!
