Building a Raised Garden Box

These boxes look pretty good. Hope to someday build something like this.

I'm in the process of building my own raised bed. On my bed the four corner posts will protrude ABOVE the bed for possible further construction in the future? Why were your four corner posts sunk into the ground? On my bed the posts will be flush with the side panels on the ground.
