  • Hi Gav,

it´s great to hear that u had been to Slovakia, in which city exactly? I´m a Slovak, and I was shocked when u mentioned that :D Anyway, good job your videos are really helpful and I cant wait to start my fiat 126 conversion. (The only problem is I can´t really understand your accent but I´m trying ;)

    Best regards,

    Sam

  • Fan bloody tastic Gav!

  • I catred my own EV Motor Engine

  • pozdrowienia z Polski ;-)

  • hi what type of motor did you put in the car, you dont say

  • yes one more vote that transmission oil STINKS so bad. hate working with it. but i love driving my ev! 9100 miles so far. cheers, mate, for you all you've done!

  • Damn those imperial bolts!

  • Cool you guys used a Tredia. I used to own one of those. they are dirt cheap but the engines that came with them weren't very good :P. Nice work.

  • It seems hardly possible that, two years ago to the day, I watched this video and was eagerly following Gav's weekly progress. What an achievement for Gav, his good wife, Veronica, and friends, that achievment which thousands of people around the world witnessed!

Best wishes and, as always, looking forward to your next video!

    RL Atlanta, GA USA

  • hey Gav, great job

how much did your car weigh originally? and how much do you think you took out of it.

  • does it have reverse gear?? lol

  • know what is so damn cool? i love how i can drive to wolfboro, its like 15 minutes from me!! haha!

  • What Type-Model of Motor is used.?

  • NH is new hampshire

  • hehe, well, still lighter than the alternative :P

--we wouldn't see you carrying a V8 like that :)

  • You two are going to hurt yourselves.

  • thats a beautiful sight to see m8

  • is it a DC engine? a thought EVs have AC engines

  • Generally EV's that are mass produced by auto companies are powered by AC, but people that convert cars to EV's power them with DC because AC components (motors and controllers) are extremely expensive, and AC powered EV's need higher voltage (200-300 volts) and the batteries needed to produce this power (lithium, ni-cad) are very expensive and limited. Hope this helps.

    Kyle

Check out my EV conversion videos!

  • Wolfborough New Hampshire just so you know. (If i understood correctly.)

I'm right near there. Good videos by the way, gives me something to do other than work!

  • Great video! Come to the states and start a electric car conversion business and you will be a millionaire. WE ARE SICK OF FOREIGN OIL.

  • Well viewing on the battery it s clear to see, that he first connected the - and then the +. (well for european batteries, maybe downunder they are different like the seasons and "the in the wrong direction flushing toilets" lol)

In DC it does not matter where you close the circle, there are always 12V and the flowing amperage is determined by the resistance(U=R*I) so there can be sparks too, no matter which order you connect it.

  • Great job . But man you need a hoist.

  • This is the first video in the series that stops and starts every three seconds, why is that?

  • It could be your connection, as it plays ok my end.

Wow I just realised how tired I sound at the beginning (I'd just driven 4.5 hours so I had an excuse).

  • lol

I thought I had hope to build one of these bad boys when you said you were not mechanically inclined but theres no way and you ARE mechanically inclined, I'm not but thats ok, I still pay less then you because I just dont move my car lol (no plug in fee lol)

  • NO NO NO NO NO! You NEVER test the motor like that. You always have POSITIVE(RED) on the battery terminal first and then NEGATIVE(BLACK). That battery is live. Be careful next time!

  • Well viewing at the motor I think that he only used the red one for negative and the black one for positive.

  • I see your point, but if you notice, the second time he tests the motor, the red terminal sparks when he connects it. This means that the terminal is positive and it is live. If you were to try that with the negative side, it wouldn't spark. Maybe he wired it wrong the second time and not the first time? Well, no assuming that the first battery is the same battery he used during the second test. And you can use perspective to determine the position the battery was facing.

  • "Super Cheap Motors"? I hope you got grade 10 bolts. Don't go cheap on bolt man. Make sure they are a high grade. They only cost a few dollars more but they are much much stronger. They should be a yelowish-gold color.

  • I think in NZ it's "Supercheap Auto Parts", it's a pretty big auto parts supplier in that part of the world.

  • NH= new hampshire

  • can you say dolly?

  • wingmirror? or sidemirror? u decide

  • Fanbloodytastic!!!

  • Awesome man, well done! NZ Innovation yeah... Bring your car up to Waiheke Is man, take it on tour

  • new hampshire

  • Is your girlfriend polish?

  • never mind

I wrote this before I got to the Slovakian part.

    I was pretty close thou.

  • lol strait from america new hampshire lol it sounds weird to an american

  • Thanks for the vids. You are an inspiration. I wish there were more vids like yours.

I love how you just dive into things. Cutting up the heater core with pruning shears was hilarious.

I found your vids while looking for the Tesla sports car. I wish someone made something affordable like that in the U.S.. I'm kind of glad gas prices have gone up. Maybe U.S. car makers will think smaller now, and electric :) It looks like I'll have to make my own though.

  • HI Gav. Great work so far. Read with interest that you bought a high frequency charger. Heard a guy in Auck was reconditioning batteries but didn't know the chargers are available. Do you have a contact. Hope it work out without a clutch. Not so hard to put one in. Just need to mount the old flywheel onto the motor with an adapter boss.Probably would have been cheaper to make than the splined adapter. All the best .Grant.

  • Hi Grant! The high frequency battery conditioner I bought from Jaycar. Still not 100% certain it's fixed any of the dead batteries I bring home from the local Telephone Exchange rubbish bins but we'll see... :)

  • Briliant, a real eye opener

  • very nice gav!!! fine to see a electric bishi

  • I went to EV Americas web site but I could not find a price for the motor you used. How much did the motor cost you before shipping? Looking forward to seeing the car in motion. Best of luck.

  • I got it for $1475 US before shipping from them.

Thanks for the kind words. I'm seeing my welding guy today to get him speed up a bit. :)

  • The particular electric motor you are using is a Series-wound DC motor. Very good choice. Make sure to use #2 gauge wire or larger so you can safely carry the current the motor will draw when under load.

  • Hey, hows it going? Been a while! nice to no the car is comming along great :P i just got back! i got married also :P so i took some time off from my S10 v8 conversion, the first clip is mostly done! just have some editing to finish should see it up in 1 week or so! hope you check it out! and hope too see your next clip up soon also! till next time! peace out!

  • GREAT WORK!!!

Can you tell me what parts you are using? =D

  • Congrats on the newspaper article. How did that come about?Did you recalculate the estimated range or did the article overestimate the expected range.

  • Thanks! I'm yet to be recognised in public though :)

I told the paper that would be the absolute max I'd ever EVER get if I drove at 30km/h in a vacuum... and they printed it.

    LOL

  • I've planned to snugly fit 6 in the front and 6 in the boot. The boot (trunk) will be easy but it'll be a tight fit in the front!

Next vid should be up in 2 weeks if my welding guy finishes the racks soon.

I've found more rust in the meantime. More sanding this week... ugh. :(

  • Incredible, anyone ever volunteer how to solve that boot-thing problem you were having? How many batteries and what type and where to put them, just going to fill the trunk and old engine space with them or just the engine space, perhaps door-mounted ones?

  • Hey Gav...is it finished yet? where are the other videos? I am interested in your project and have been on EVAmerica's website recently...this is so cool...hope you are going to write back or put up more videos...i really want to know what is going on with this...thanks buddy

  • Can you give an estimate on the range you expect to get.I know the 12 volt batteries wont have the range of deep cell 6 volts but you have to figure a compromise between weight, space, cost and desired voltage. My goal is to begin a similar project in about 6 months.

  • Sure thing, I'm hoping to get at least 50km (about 30 miles) out of a charge as most about town driving will be 5 miles or less.

Budget so far is about $7000 NZ ($5000 US I think). Still got those pesky batteries to buy too...

  • I look forward to seeing your finished EVcar and maybe a guess-tamite of your costs ;)

  • first of all congratulation's on the wedding! hope it goes well. I like the part about being on the wrong side of the road. anyway thanks for doing your videos it is nice to see an electric car built from scratch. The one with the pot box was helpful. well cant wait to see more, thanks.

  • Thank you! Married life is fantastic!

Next vid should be up in 2 weeks with luck.

It was certainly the wrong side of the road for me!

Man that was terrifying - anyone ever driven on the "other" side before? Took me 3 whole days to get the hang of it!

  • Yes I have, I'm a 'Yank' who lived in OZ from '87-'90 and after the first year I bought a '73 Holden station-wagon and drove it to Cairns. I guess the first year there acclimated me to your Lefty ways, but I still took the first 20 seconds of my first drive on the wrong side....didn't make that mistake again! =-0 Generally what I found difficult was dealing with the whole car being to the left of me instead of the right, otherwise it was OK.

  • do you intend to supply 12 volts with a dc/dc converter or run an alternator on the second shaft

  • I'm not going to use a 144V DC to 12V DC converter to save money. I'm using a smaller deep cycle battery I got for free. I installed that last weekend and it looks good in it's new location.

  • Whoa seems like I got way to excited when I was typing my last comment.. next time.. I'll spell check :)..

  • beautiful! You know.. if you car had an easy way to pop out your low battery and pop a new one in.. you could easily have a couple on a charging unit that you could switch out.. I believe that one day.. when a standard is set on the battery types as far as electric cars go.. there will be trade out stations.. like like they have propane switch out stations for your grill at home..

  • Be sure to find space for the cars electrical supply battery.Did not see one mocked up in the photos on your site

  • Yup, I'm working on that part. I have a newer-ish battery for the headlights/wipers etc which will go where the original battery went. I've just wired up the recharging socket too. Progress is good!

  • New Hampshire

  • Hey my name is Jason and I just watched all your clips which I thought where great. Very well done, I have a 84 tredia turbo and just seeing you though all those parts away made me cringe as its hard to find some of those part around these days. Anyway great to watch and im looking ford to the clips to come. Oh and you could mount the "L" plate on the inside to take up less room and flush mount the screws, maybe look tidyer? What is the over all cost est? and how much will it weigh?

  • Thanks folks!

That's a good idea about the L-Plate for the battery box being turned around. I wish I'd thought of that. I fear it's too late to change the plans now with my welding guy...

It looks like it's going to end up costing about $7000 US all up at this stage. Weight should only be 200 pounds over the factory weight I'm estimating. The next video should be up before the end of September. Keep watching! :)

  • wow an american electric motor?does bush know?

  • Gidday! I'll be using 12 x 12v batts in series to give 144 volts. I should be able to get about 60 HP out of the motor but more than twice the original torque. Should move along with the other traffic effortlessly!

I moved the car up my driveway under electric power yesterday - I invite you to check out the video on my site!!!

  • JUst heard you're getting 12 battery chargers... Will you use 12 x 12v batteries, and have 72 volts, but in parallel? That should give nice amp capacity!

  • Hi Gav, apologies if you've already stated (I couldn't find), but what battery configuration will you be using? Ie. How many Batteries, what type, and how many volts. Also, how many KW can the motor you bought produce? And thank you very much for a great video series of this conversion, I am excited to see the progress! I will be converting my ford in the future, you'll be happy to hear!

  • How much to you think this conversion will cost you total?

  • Hurry up with the next Vid, will ya?!! We're all waiting.

Great project, nice job and Congrats with the wedding...Why weren't we invited? ....now that I think of it, I'm pissed ;->

  • LOL! Didn't you get the invite? Must have got lost in the mail. Hehehe

I'm building cardboard battery mockups at the moment, trying to find places to put batteries in the future, then I'll get the welder over to start making the racks. It's all go! Hoping to have a new vid up within a month if possible.

  • This is the FB1-4001A motor. They had an adapter plate and a fitting tool but it was going to be too hard with the distance so I got one made up here. As for the controller, I'm still saving! :)

There's one guy out there that converted a Jeep 4x4 to electric. Don't know if he's gone off road but his site is driveev, com

  • Is this motor the FB1-4001A or the X91-4001? did they offer an adaptor plate that could be made for the car? how much did the controller cost you?

  • Just watched all of your vids and Im really impressed and jeleous. Im in the middile of building a Jeep cj7 with a 304cid v8 engine and Im dreading the gas prices im going to have to pay for it. Ever heard of anyone using these EV's offroad? would definately like to look into it. I have read about these EV's at local drag strips and theu are dreadfully fast. Best of luck.

    -Will

  • The EV Photo Album has a few 4x4s that have been converted to electric, including a few Jeeps...

  • Ahoy-hoy, I'm using the fairly limited Nerovision editor for the vids as it came with the DVD drive.

The project is at about $3000 USD at the moment (lots of that is shipping) and I'm hoping Video 11 will be up in a month or so. Vid 11 will be the battery racks I'm hoping! Money is in short supply however so there may be a delay! :)

  • Hey, what are you editing these videos on. cheers.

  • Gav, how much to you figure this entire project has/will cost you in USD please? Also, when do you think you will post video #11? The world is watching!

    :-)

    Cheers

  • ITS ALIVE! ITS ALIVE ! Gavin is pioneer as far as im concerned. He is the first person to video diary the making of a Electric car. Iam glad to have found his video series. i will use it as a guide when i build mine. the best to the newly weds. rob from

    electricvehicles group on myspace

  • hi can you tell us the motor supplier and where it is in new hampshire .also are you placing a frequency generator to act in co hoots with it ? search alan cocconi ev1 (just some info for you)

  • Sure thing, I got the motor from EV America. They do good shipping rates for people outside the USA (like me).

I also have a small video of me moving the car about using the motor on the website only: kiwiev, com

  • by the way NH Stands for New Hampshire And That IS the State i live in lol !!!!

    hope you enjoy the motor

  • Awsome, u r too cool, I cannot wait to see the next video

  • Ahh ic.. lol , Quick Question for ya! after the electric car is done you selling your gas car? just wondering lol! and just letting you no im almost done my first clip for my s10 v8 conversion! i just have some editing to do and it should be up in a few weeks! :P

  • Good stuff Eric! I'm a petrol-head at heart so I'm keen to see your V8 conversion for sure!

I'm going to sell my 6 cylinder nissan (although I love it) when the EV's done.

  • Well done

  • Yeah I'm a long way from breaking my oil addiction. I had to buy 4 litres for my other gas car yesterday. Ouch! (And yuk!)

I want to see it move up the driveway too but I'll need more than the dying 10 volt battery in the video above! For the timebeing that old battery only have enough Oomph to move the car on a flat surface. :(

  • My gosh, do you have another electric car. > I had to buy 4 litres for my other gas car yesterday. Ouch! (And yuk!)

If you do, post that up aswell

  • Noooo, I just have one Electric car at the moment - I wish I had two! :)

  • I thought you said in the last clip you was done with oil.. lol.. and we see you with oil again? lol.. just kidding lol. But nice Job dude! One thing to ask ya you think we can see the car moving down the hill and back up? lol would be cool too see :P let me no thanks, and keep up the good work dude ..

  • I was wondering when the next update video would be. Finally it's here. Keep up the good work. I'm looking forward to seeing it running on the street.

  • I like this electric car tutorial of yours very much, i cant wait to see the result, im looking forward to many more of your vids.

  • congrats, on the motor and on the marriage. been waiting long for the video, didn't know you were in Europe getting MARRIED... glad everything worked ok

  • If it has less power, do you have to certify it ? It's not part of the structure so I'd hope not

  • I still have to certify it even if it has less power unfortunately. There's a whole page of reasons you have to certify your car if you do something major to it.

Got to keep those government people in jobs I guess!

  • given the infinite possibilities in an infinite universe, some putz would assemble himself a death trap so making sure you've got something street legal and safe isn't that bad of an idea.

  • Amazingly good stuff!

  • I thought you gave up the Tredia Hybrid for your Wife! Hope that Mitsubishi does not spoil your honey moon! :)

  • I've been following your progress for some time now and I must say your videos are very entertaining! Wish I had an accent like that! Anyway can't wait to see the test drive so hurry up and get some battery power and get that car on the streets!

  • LOL!

Don't let the Australians here you say that. They think Kiwi accents are ridiculous. Baat wie theenk thay sernd just es seely. (That was a kiwi attempt an an Aussie accent)

    :)

  • Kiwi, Aussie and some of the POMs; y'all sound the same. It's all good though.

  • Augh! Kiwis and Aussies sound the same?

    I glove slap thee!

    LOL

  • looking forward for your first run out!

  • Glad to have you back on YT! Congratulations, and good luck with the car

  • NH = New Hampshire

  • Hehehe, thanks mate!

Thought it might be "North Haverbrook" where they got that funky Monorail system installed on the Simpsons a few years back. I'm probably the only sad git who remembers that episode... :)

  • Hooray! Glad to see you're done with that silly marriage stuff and back to work doing something respectable.

  • congratulations great job!

  • sweet!
