Thanks for the upload! It really helps me a lot! But, I have a question. As you say in the end of the video I using the split polygon tool than pressing enter...and nothing happen...whats the problem? the version? maya 2010
I have selected the "face" on right click. and when ever I selected the three in"0:37"
there are parts of the polygon that are also high lightened and keep on including on the "face function" thus , that part is also affected when ever i extrude..Is there something wrong? I hope You can help me with this....
Thats what he did. It depends on what purpose the hands role is in the scene anyway. If your not planing on doing any kind of animation to the fingers themselves. Then the low poly count is better. Besides that is something that can easily be added in later if it is needed. Only add as much detail as you need for the scene. Lesser detail can always become greater detail.

The split polygon tool in maya 2011 is nothing like the one you used in the video. The smooth tool is similar in that sense as well.

@Actar411 Those tools are exactly the same actually. To my knowledge, they haven't changed anything except their shelf icons

@flameriderful if you split across too many faces, sometimes it doesnt work

dude with the knuckles you have to ad atleast 3 divisions at each join for rigging perposes or atleast that how i understand it
