No question Peter is a great one. I still love listening to the Hieroglyphics Ensemble things he did some years back. That music stands shoulder to shoulder with Brotherhood of Breath. Hope somebody posts some Hiero clips here sometime.
Peter covers a lot of territory on his various instruments and turns up in some intriguing places. Check out long the clip of Trey Anastasio's band live at Bonaroo. He's right up there in the middle of it.
PART 1 - i didn't mean to be dismissive - but many of the people on this board make baseless comments, and i was under the impression that was the case here. if that's your opinon, then so be it. everyone's entitled. but as a musicologist? feel free to explain your thinking on the "ugliness". i play w/ peter on occasion. he also plays three instruments, all extremely well - piano, drums, and sax...
PART 2 - he's recorded widely, considered a genius by many. he also plays with a ph.d musicologist (and 6-time downbeat award winner) karl berger. karl would certainly have a different opinion. so if the playing of instruments and the musicology degree is evidence of cache to support your opinion, then others with at least as much cache would certainly disagree. so, let's hear your thinking.
Man, this stuff is so deep. I so miss Don Cherry. These guys were fantastic! Multi-culti was such a perfect blend of soul and jazz and the outside!
