i did a similar thing to this except that i didn't put anything on the square bit.. i'm assuming this is why i still have some laxity in the vertical direction?
Do you know what's the generic name for that tape you used? I googled "Plumber's tape" and it shows the one made of teflon. The reason to ask you this is that I live in Mexico and I don't know how to call it in Spanish. I know something about tapes but I can't tell what kind is that one. I can see it's double-sided and thin. Thanks.
I had to use packaging tape and now the thumbstick gets stuck and slowly returns to the center and holding up on it doesnt respond help plz and i dont having plumbing tape
i failed at this :( left and right work fine, but up and down are not responding. for example i cant make Link to start running, he just walks slowly :/ any suggestions ?
This is a lovely video good sir. You did well for taking it apart. And fixing that analog. I think when i get the time. ill do this my self. Thank you.
Brilliant video. Very well communicated. I will say I'm very optimistic right now. I was feeling down because these 3rd party replacement sticks for sale actually suck as it turns out. Nobody should think that they will function properly. So in other words, what you've shown, is ultimately the only pure solution.
I am wondering though, have you put these repaired sticks through their paces? Lasting ability?
Also, plumbers tape. One kind? Or will I find 10 different kinds to choose from?
@Sedohr95 I wouldn't, I've tried all sorts of tape and you want a tape that isn't soft like Duct tape. The best thing you can use is good quality packing tape or maybe scotch tape. The thicker the tape the better. I hope this helps!
or you could just buy a modernized N64 thums stick assembly. you will never have it wear out again. watch?v=sOmSoT2pYN4 the link is in the video description to the video i linked to in this post. Its around $10.
@madmax2069 When you go to sand those parts down to get the perfict fit you want to use a very fine grit sand paper, a finger nail file will also come in handy.
@madmax2069 There are actually 3 places the analog stick wears out. The third spot is the 2 slots on the ball of the thumb stick where it pivots. let the epoxy dry for around a days time or longer. after its dry sand where you applied the epoxy. and constantly check the fit. stop sanding in those spots when it fits like new. The epoxy dries just as hard if not harder then the plastic your building back up. and the epoxy bonds to the plastic so you dont have to worry about it coming apart.
The best and a longer lastin fix is to buy some thick plastic epoxy in the twin tubes, Take the controller apart and take the analog assembly apart. Use the plastic epoxy and apply it to where she is sticking the tape to build back up those wear marks.
Very good idea to use the plumbers tape, I fixed a good few n64 analogs sticks use all different methods to find the best and to apply it. Your analog was a bit worn, wouldn't say very loose, your method if fine for that, but for ones that are very worn you need to put in more work. I hoped to put a video up of the method I use to fix worn out ones but I never got around to it. Just posting this so people with really worn out analogs realise this method will help but not fix.
It makes the Control Stick feel and look better but the game play is still like it was before with it,when i push Up on the control stick Mario still walks, instead of run
I tried this on my controller and it didn't work out that well... when assembled it again I tried it out but it was extremely sticky when i go up and down. And it's STILL wobbly! Since it was up and down that was sticky i took off the tape on the neck and when I assebmled it once again... It was still sticky... after that I gave up and fully assebmled it. I don't know why it was still wobbly Please tell me what you think i did wrong!!!! *Sad face*
Wow, thank you very much! The other day I was feeling really nostalgic so I went to dust of the old NES and my old n64. I thought that a lame analog stick was the end of it but thanks to your video it is alive again! Maybe need one more try to rid the stick of the last wobbles but the technique really helps!
haha controller dust. That is a very special kind of dust only on controllers. I love the video it really helped me fiz all those pesky controllers iv been meaning to fix.
nice video Holly. I want to get the Green, Orange, Watermellon, and Smoke N64 systems. They sure look pretty. I have been wanting to do this to 1 of my controllers.
@masonsushi No Ice Blue or Grape? If I were to get a second one I would get the Grape but I only need one lol. I will keep a look out for you. The orange one is very common in my area.
I've had the same N64 controler's since I was a kid. My analog sticks go all over the face if I move the controler a bit. xD I'd do this but the last time I ever opened a controler it ended in disaster. D:
@Ch0coDK Good luck. It is an easy repair you shouldn't have any issues. The hardest part is lining up the internal gears as long as you have them correct you will be fine.
You guys don't try this with electrical tape...
