I'm probably gonna get bashed for this comment but why do people see the need to try and support their religion on a page of an atheist's song? Why not try and talk about religious stuff on a page filled with religious people? just saying...
@FayazYunus I agree that it's weird, but I think we should be thankful that so many religious people talk to non-religious people, I don't want to know what would happen if they started to only talk to people with the same opinion as them *shudders*
Though the Bible is a compilation of myths and letters and was never intended by its writers to be interpreted literally. In all irony, the only people who think the bible is intended to be a literal interpretation of facts are religious nuts and the atheists who detest them so. Kinda weird how they have a lot more in common than they think.
@EstanBulLoFre I think the only reason that atheists are detest the bible for its literal interpretation is because, for thousands of years, the bible and the old testament were undeniably interpreted literally. Religions only come to us with these watered down interpretations because they now lack the power they once had. And I'm interested as to how you came to the conclusion that the writers intended these stories to be metaphorical. You think they would have included a footnote or something.
@TheSittingArchitect I really wouldn't say that for thousands of years they took the book itself literally. Surely they were making direct accounts of what they feel has happened, but the reason for the Bible itself isn't meant to be taken as a specific guide how to live your life. I'm not saying they intentionally pulled these stories out their ass and didn't think this shit actually happened; it intends the reader to read deeper than to the stories themselves.

And what authority do you have to tell us the stories were never meant to be interpreted literally? How do determine which parts are allegorical and which parts aren't? Certainly you can't say the entire Bible is allegory.. if that were the case it really would just be a fairy tale and you wouldn't call yourself a Christian. What a stupid case you have. Of course they written literally, maybe search up some biblical scholar essays?
@Kloborgg Pretty much any biblical scholar worth their salt would disagree with you. There ARE literal accounts put into the bible, but the bible is by no means meant to be taken as a literal guideline in itself for how to express one's faith or how to live your life. The Book of Genesis is entirely allegory, and was never meant to be mistaken as literal fact. As for the rest, I'm not claiming it's all fake, just that it's not a cut-and-dry "here's how to be a good person" book.
...I'm just stunned at how blatantly wrong you are, yet you maintain the backing of unnamed scholars. To say that the creation story was entirely allegorical.. it's just FALSE. Search "History of God", please.
@Kloborgg Hate to break it to you, but there were no eye witnesses to the creation of everything and the garden of eden. Nobody has ever claimed God has spoken to them saying "write this down, this is how I created everything".
What the fuck are you arguing right now? When did I say "there were eye witnesses to the christian fairy tale of gardens and creations"? No one has ever claimed that they were divinely inspired? That's news to me! Are you arguing about biblical scholars or theologians? Biblical scholars study real history and evidence, theologians try to prove an ancient myth. Bro, you are confused.
@Kloborgg ....do you not know what Allegorical means? I'm actually confused as to what the fuck YOU'RE trying to stand for. At first I thought you were arguing that the whole story of Adam and Eve isn't allegory but fact. Now I'm getting the vibe that you think I'M the one trying to 'prove' that the garden of eden and "earth made in 7 days" thing is fact. Just settle down, ignore what I said, and just explain where you're coming from so I can word myself more clearly.
I'm saying the entire Bible is false, but it was not written as allegory. It was written "as fact", or to specify it was written to be believed as the >literal< creation story. It was not written by authors who wanted to teach a theoretical lesson.
@Kloborgg Alright, and I'm saying it wasn't written to be taken as a literal interpretation of fact. Many biblical theorists, theologians and historians like Richard Rohr identify it as allegory, because allegories were a common thing back then. Obviously some take it as a literal creation story, but you won't find any evidence towards or against the intention of Genesis, so we're stuck in a stalemate.
@leftclickben Essentially that's what it is. My whole point is the bible isn't meant to "confirm" religion, or act as an actual account of facts. It's meant to be used as a tool for religious folks to expand their spiritual thinking and widen their moral base. I'm an atheist and yet I can still spend hours picking away and unraveling the symbolism and themes behind it. Anyone who reads the bible and sees it as an "instruction manual" of any kind is simply doing it wrong.
"Though the Bible is a compilation of myths and letters and was never intended by its writers to be interpreted literally." So how is it then, in any way, different from the Qur’an? Or even old Greek Myths? If you read the Bible as a literary book, filled with philosophy, morality and ethics, then yes, we can discuss it. But that’s not how it has been read, or even was intended to. It was divine law, and held up as such for centuries spilling into the modern world.
@wimscheers I'd like to know your sources for thinking it was meant to be read in that way, as many biblical philosophers like Richard Rohr avidly argue against that. Even Jesus himself in the bible makes many claims against the point of religion being solely a set of divine laws by which to live, which would serve as a complete contradiction to include it if the bible wasn't meant to follow the same logic. It's easy to see the bible as many things but you gotta study it bro.
“If you just close your eyes and block your ears to the accumulating knowledge of the last 2000 years then morally guess what you’re off the hook and thank Christ you only have to read one book!”
