they are completly different animals. degus are normaly grey or black and are much larger than gerbils. they do look simmilar. but the degu is closer related to the guinea pig beleive it or not! x x

Yeah. I've seen pet stores that pick up Gerbils by the tail. It's sad. Here's a couple gerbil Tips:

Tip#1- If your gerbils gets loose, don't start moving stuff like a couch or a big storage box. If it hits the gerbil's tail, the piece will fall off.

Tip#2- If your gerbil's tail falls off, wrap it up with something like cloth ( I used toilet paper) and hold it down for about 2 minutes.

Tip#3- WHATEVER I SAY DON'T FORGET TO FEED YOUR GERBIL! THEY WIIL START TO BITE!

I was looking for gerbils a long time in stores, and everytime the people that worked there, they lift them up by there tail.

its kinda frustrating to see, you would think they know how to handle animals in a good way.

To lift a gerbil up at the base of the tail is the CORRECT way to handle one which COULD bite you. Anywhere else on the tail is bad and the tail could come off.

Please get your facts straight before complaining. Someone who works AT A PET STORE is more qualified than you. Believe it.

Best way to catch an escapist is a long wrapping paper tube. Cover one end with a tomato/strawberry net, place the open side under the furniture, wait til the gerbil goes in and then cover the open end. Transport the guy back to his cage.

That's because you don't catch them. You either lay your hand flat out in the tank and wait for them to climb or, if you absolutely need to pick it up, grab the base of the tail and lift them up enough so that you can put them flat in your hand. If you try to grab at them, they'll get scared.

Your right about the laying your hand flat on the ground to pick up gerbils but never pick up by tail, i am an rspca office and i have seen many issues of tail that have been amputated away from the body with handeling gerbils that way, it doesent always happend but it can, i have 15 gerbils at my home becouse i love then so much, i have 3 in each gerbalium with i have 5 of and i also have a normal gerbil cage for my one gerbil she was brought up allown when she came into rscpa
