@jiggity99 & @MrYuk2oh6 where did MrYuk talk about genocide being done to anyone during the colonization of North America? Not sure how his interpretation of this song was racist either. Could have said Europeans instead of White but otherwise, ....?
In my school our teacher showed us this cuz we had native americans as main subject in english but in the end he paused it and we all screamed cmon we want to see the end! After school i watched this tape again and understood why he didn't showed the end :D
@TheJirwch Your teacher was a moron then. From its beginning, the Iraq War was a direct violation of International Law. Dave's a pussy about it here. It's clear that he opposes it, as he should oppose it, as any decent human being should oppose it. During the mid-1980's the US backed Sadaam Hussein both militarily and economically, as he carried out his worst crimes (gassing the Kurdish minority). The Iraq War is criminal (at least 104,000 civilians dead as a result of the invasion)
So this song is about white people coming to America. Before anyone gets all sympathetic and butt-hurt, study the animal kingdom. Dog-eat-dog. It works no different with us than any other mammal. Sure we're capable of rational and compassionate thinking, but that doesn't put us above nature. White people have been extremely successful at conquering and colonizing, why u mad bro?
@MrYuk2oh6 How delightfully racist of you. You're actually trying to rationalize genocide using Darwinian laws of nature? Are you going to hold to the same standards if someone enslaves you or murders your family? What will you say then? It's just "dog eat dog?"
I used to be a big John Mayer fan and I for the most part still am, but ever since I heard DMB for the first time last month on the radio, I've been hooked.
The roots of Empire run DEEP in American history, beginning with the genocide of the indigenous people who lived in harmony with this continent until the Invaders came.
I never tire of this track. Acoustic live guitars master musicians and a fabulous voice. Full volume in my car travelling at night in the countryside with Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds on full volume with extra bass. Mind blowing.
This had this playing in the entertainment room of best buy. i sat down in the recliner, turned up the volume for the whole store to hear and watched the entire concert
5:20 is probably the most epic part of this song in this performance. When Tim is building up and than with his pedal lowers it to a dark kind of sound.
The only part of the video that I feel repulsed is at 4:25, how the crowd cheers when Dave mentions the New York Islands. How can any sensible person cheer about that genocide? Does anyone in that crowd understand what the song is about? I know that the performance takes place at Radio City, New York, but does anyone there show any compassion about the wipe out of human beings that happened long before. They seem more like a horde of cheering artificial idiots than intelligent beings.
He's not being political, he's being a humanitarian. He's just saying how the division of two countries and war is stupid and make no sense. In fact, that's the total opposite of politics.
from 4:50 - 5:50 i breakdown/ cry/wanna throw things/ destroy shit because that part and how its played is so powerful it makes you want to explode if you put this song into a perspective of your own life
@wopyomi Have you ever noticed how Dave fans sort of... attract lol? Like for instance. My friend and I saw dave in boston. We took the train in and everyone on the train were dave fans. And it was like a big happy party
I was at this concert and it was so exciting to hear the crowd exploding once the song really gets going! The only thing missing was Carter Beauford and the rest of the band!
At 7:30, Tim's looking at Dave like "You're really high, and just rambling right now, but it'd be embarrassing for me to interrupt you, so I'll let you keep talking. But really, what are you even saying right now?" That said, Dave's one of my heroes.
It's always bothered me how people cheered when he cut in with lyrics from "This Land is Your Land". Dave is trying to get a point across and the audience entirely missed it.
all personal bullshit aside... this song is absolutely incredible. its amazing a man can put such meaning into a song and have it be so powerful and gentle at the same time. this is music people
im the only one out of all my friends besides a couple who gets what this song is about and when i try to explain that its about what the english did to africans they disagree and its so frustrating because they are so used to the shit on the radio these days
The song was based on a simpler tune played by Dave Matthews, first dubbed "Weight of the World" when played on his acoustic tour with Tim Reynolds in 1996, and later "Leave Me Praying", as the song became more structured during tours in 1997. The subject of the song is the apartheid in South Africa and the persecution of the Native Americans. Your only half right
Love the passion he has in this song, angry dave is a very sexy dave....LOL! This song gives me chills just to think about the story he is trying to put out there that's really how it happened, thats really how all these Native American's felt. Make you want to request this song on every station you know on Columbus Day...
@wowhobbs3 There's "blood in the water" Because Millions died......Not for their country. Not for future generations. They were killed by an invader that practiced germ warfare (traded blankets from ppl with smallpox which indigenous ppl had little or no resistance to.You know..they died from it), and genocide, LONG b4 Hitler did..The buffalo were hunted nearly to extinction to starve the plains tribes. The list is VERY long.... I love the USA, my country, but Manifest Destiny was Genocide IMHO
"and genocide, LONG b4 Hitler did." -- Yeah, except that the Hitler genocide myth has long since been disproved. In fact, it was alliances with Hitler which resulted in the freedom of colonies under oppressive British and French colonial rule. Here's a video:
"The Multicultural Soldiers of the Third Reich / National Socialism "
Also, your claim about Manifest destiny being genocide, keep in mind that warring tribes were genociding each other well before Europeans got there.
Watch the Jewish historian, David Cole, explain Auschwitz to you, and then decide for yourself. See his video presentation at:

But keep in mind that those who amplify -- and perhaps exaggerate -- the story the loudest are usually those who compete for political power w/ European Americans. Thanks kindly. Yeah, I'm not into Hitlerian authoritarianism or anything like that. It was an ideology of yesteryear; no need to revisit! But I wouldn't want to revisit FDR's authoritarianism, either. Here's a nice article about how he deceived America into war:
"Franklin Roosevelt's 'Secret Map' speech"
If there's a lesson in this, then maybe it should be that it's the no-so-obvious tyrants who should concern us most. In this case, FDR.
AND THE ONLY INFO I GET FROM HIS VIDEO IS THAT THERE WAS NO LATCH ON THE DOOR TO THE POISION ROOMS..
BUT THE NAZIS HAD WEAPONS ON THEIR SIDE WEATHER THE JEWS WANTED TO STAY IN THE ROOM FILLED WITH POISON DEPENDED GREATLY ON THE NAZIS HAVING WEAPONS AND THEM HAVING NOTHING!!! NO STRENGTH TO FIGHT.
Capital letters? Are you mentally challenged? What about the part where the curator reveals how Soviets "reconstructed" the alleged "gas chamber" after the war, to make it look like people had actually been "gassed" in it? What about the US military's aerial photos which reveal no lines of people waiting to be "gassed"? -- and no piles of wood for cremation? -- no smoke? Maybe you should watch it again. See the Web for:
Evil indeed. Why, with all those exploitative colonies owned by the British[banking]Empire and France. The Rothschilds and their associates had half the world's people enslaved, all the while pillaging their natural resources.
It was only due to, e.g., Chandra Bose's collaboration with Adolf and Germany, that places like India were finally freed from oppression; hence, putting an end to the "British" Empire.
@LibertaerUeberAlles i have to say that even though i agree that India has been freed from "British" oppression i cant help but notice that it hasn't fully stopped. The thing is, i just saw the Gandhi movie, and on one part he says that poverty is the most cruel form of violence. That struck me as an enlightening truth, it figures coming from Gandhi himself eh? anyways, no point intended, just a little adding of perspective on the matter. i wish you all peace, truth, education, and activism.
and if you have time, which if youre on youtube I'm sure you have time, Check out Dave's rant for the beginning of "So Damn Lucky" ... DAMN THIS CHICKEN IS GOOD!
dont drink the water, blood in the water meaning some people want us to believe in a certain thing that they believe in but those things are wrong. If we drink the blooded water they give to us (if we listen to them), we are brain washed by them and we become like those people. Basically, just recognize right from wrong and don't copy the wrong things.
i feel like a newbie, im 18 and I was into rap and hip hop until this summer my friend started listening to dave 24/7 so i started listening to him and sure enough i am completly hooked and just cant not listen to dave

@LibertaerUeberAlles i have to say that even though i agree that India has been freed from "British" oppression i cant help but notice that it hasn't fully stopped. The thing is, i just saw the Gandhi movie, and on one part he says that poverty is the most cruel form of violence. That struck me as an enlightening truth, it figures coming from Gandhi himself eh? anyways, no point intended, just a little adding of perspective on the matter. i wish you all peace, truth, education, and activism.

dont drink the water, blood in the water meaning some people want us to believe in a certain thing that they believe in but those things are wrong. If we drink the blooded water they give to us (if we listen to them), we are brain washed by them and we become like those people. Basically, just recognize right from wrong and don't copy the wrong things.
