  • Saw Jan Akerman play this 3 or so years ago at a solo gig in Cambridge..........stunning !!

  • Akkerman, guitar master!!!!

  • Focus' chord progressions were unrivaled yet with such simple beauty !

  • sigh...

  • Bocanada

  • such a smooth bass, god

  • Brilliant .. I have been searching for this the extended version which was released as a single in 1971 and played on Radio Nordsee ... but never a UK hit. My copy went awol years ago!

    Thanks for posting

  • You're welcome.

  • @rickyon thanks for posting this masterpiece. I´ve been listening to it since 72 from time to time and will always listen to

  • You're welcome.

  • although this version is utterly perfect due to Akkerman's guitar, but we shouldn't forget Tom Barlage of the Netherlandish band Solution who composed this tune. listen to their song "Divergence" - this is where the solo comes from, and it's certainly a nice listening experience for all those who like "Tommy"!

  • best background music for late 70's porn

  • Too good for a porn soundtrack! It would distract from the action onscreen. You would have to make up your mind.....porn?.....great music?..... What a dilemma! Of course the two choices aren't necessarily bad.

  • The later incarnations of Focus, without Jan Akkerman, are "Focus light", or maybe shouldn't be called Focus at all.

  • who sampled this song besides g?

  • the bass player on Moving Waves (and on Tommy as well) is Cyril Havermans. Bert Ruiter entered the band in Focus III.

  • Thanks for the correction. For some reason I took the info from the Live At The Rainbow album! I don't know why.

  • @bobking65 Most of the bass playing on the focus II album was done by Jan Akkerman.

  • @titan57nl Thanks, I didn't really know this at all. I just refer to the lineup on the LP.

Where did you get this info? (just for curiosity)

  • If that's irony you better take a self defense course because if you say that to the wrong person they may just beat your ass!

  • I discovered Focus just 10 minutes ago, brought here by a cover played by Helloween, and I found one of the greatest band in history. Fuck!! I wasn't even born in those years, so i'm justified... but why none ever told me of their existence???

You, older fans, SPREAD THE WORD!!! I will do it!!! if you don't.... FUCK OFF!!!!

  • No need to get so nasty. Spread the word with civility not vulgarity.

  • @rickyon Man, I was ironic!!!

  • A 20 year old American musician was galavanting around Germany and ABBA was the rage: brilliant but unpalatable. Then someone turned me on to this genius Dutch rock band and musically the environment changed. They are not only superlative musicians with classical and Jazz training, but with iconic originality equalling any of their contemporaries. I eventually saw them on their "Hamburger Concerto" tour in the States.

  • Even after all these years..... what a magnificent and uplifting piece of music... yes... it is a movement from a long piece, but back then, we all knew the bit we were waiting for out of the 23 minutes of Eruption!

  • Just happened upon this. Had Focus's "Greatest Hits" or something a few years back. Had only heard "Hocus Pocus" before that. Very unique sound to their music. This was excellent though too short.

  • Actually this is a small section of a 23 minute song!

  • @rickyon Thanks. I'm going to try and get the whole thing. Beautiful song. If you're not familiar with Colosseum's "Valentyne Suite", you might want to check it out. This reminds me of it.

  • You're welcome. I will check out Valentine Suite.

  • I don't give a sh** whether people like this or not. I spent many a night back in 1972 listening to this while I lived in Las Vegas. I was amazed at all of Focus, but especially Jan Akkerman. This is one of the most emotive solos of all times in my opinion. It it speaks to you, it speaks to you. If not, move on and keep searching...

  • Keep on living the dream of one of the best bands ever

  • @rickyon and who are you to tell them what they can and cant do, you are telling them to avoid reading/commenting, becouse they are either too mature or too inmature, they take it too seriously or too light, they are right or wrong, this could go on forever... I suggest that if it bothers you then don't read it and certainly don't waste your time commenting! practice what you preach bro..

  • Who I am is the person who posted this video on my channel and if you don't like what I do or say here then move on! Just keep this up and see how long you will last here.

  • The tone of his guitar is so beautiful..it goes right through me, not a single note out of place...it's perfect!

  • @rickyon INTERNET RAGE IS AWESOME.

  • I CAN'T TELL YOU HOW MAD THAT MAKES ME! I AM ENRAGED! YOU"RE RIGHT! THIS IS AWESOME!

  • @rickyon WOOOO! LOL. ON A MUCH MORE SERIOUS NOTE. I WANT TO DO DRUGS AND LISTEN TO THIS SONG ALL WEEKEND LONG.

  • Oh my the memories......easily puts Focus among the greats along with King Crimson, Yes, early Genesis and Pink Floyd!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @darley1958 i completely agree, but i would put camel too.

  • super cool!!!!!

  • correction....moving waves released 1971

  • On the moving waves album released in 1972 I think you may find that bass and vocal credit goes to Cyril Havermans.

  • Very very good tune and musicianship

  • 4 people are stupid arabiens...

  • Oh my god this guys are amazing really amazing

  • it kills me when i hear the small guitar error at 0.23, why didnt they correct it for the album ?

  • @MrMamboking2 Good question. I hear a lot of 'errors' in Akkerman's playing, but I don't think they ARE errors. I think he intends them OR insists they stay in because they reflect that peculiar moment in time when they occurred. For me, that is the beauty of Akkerman - the humanity. We know he can play 'perfectly' - we've heard it often enough in his classical work. I hope you know what I am talking about, coz I'm not sure if I do. LOL!

  • Excellent !!!

  • "All instrumentals are songs." Hmmmm. Are classical music forms such as concerto, canon, symphony and fugue instrumentals? Are they songs?

"Next you'll argue that the voice is an instrument I suppose." Hmmmm. Many highly trained vocalists will tell you that it is.

  • Just observing the English language and the definitions of the words therein. An instrumental is a SONG without vocals. All instrumentals are songs unless you are playing mindless formless non-patterns. Then it wouldn't be a song but it wouldn't be an instrumental either. Classical forms of music without vocals would fall into the instrumental category. The human voice singing is the performance of a song, the person doing the singing is the instrument. These are easy concepts to understand.

  • I don't know how can someone dislike this

  • Great Dutch band. I remember them in the 70's and loved them then and still do. Sylvia is out of this world. Love from Dublin, Ire....

  • It seems to me that Santana was and is under strong influence of Jan Akkerman. Samba Pa-Ti and Europa sound to me like Santana's version of this tune. I just heard this tune for the very first time, and I head this thought right away: "man, this sounds like Santana!"

  • @TosiekDegutis

    I m agree with you !

  • THIS SONG MAKES ME FEEL LIKE IN HEAVEN!!!

  • TE AMO CAT!

  • Just a slight point of order. This is not a song, no one sings on it, therefore it is an Instrumental.

  • I have to correct the correcter. An instrumental is a song without vocals. You said it was not a song. All songs are not instrumentals but all instrumentals are songs.

  • @rickyon Besides, there is singing, I hear voices, they just aren't saying words. So the original corrector made an invalid point.

  • You are correct and rational my friend from Austria!

  • @rickyon @rickyou 1. SuperCoastie1 0.

  • @SuperCoastie1 What a nitpicker ! There is a vocal part on it. Next you'll argue that the voice is an intrument I suppose ;D

  • @SuperCoastie1 . as i understand the pigeon holing. is the sound in a track is made a vocal as in vocal human voice if only to be a silly sound then that illiminates it from being an instrumental track.

  • VETTE SHIT!.... Kippenvel!

  • moving pictures + permanent waves = moving waves

  • i dont know what it is, but this sound/music its so dutch......

  • I don't know what would make you think that! It's not like they are from Holland or something like that!

  • @rickyon ha yhea right, mabey youl understand it if you were dutch.

in the 70s there were so many of these strange rock songs in holland.

  • Just a little joke, remarking on the obvious. I have to admit though what other band has such genius as Thijs Van Leer and Jan Akkerman!!!!!! Totally unique and incredibly awesome!

  • instrumental maravilhoso.

  • This is really good!! I liked

  • OBRIGADA POR COMPARTILHAR TÃO PRECIOSO TEMA. DESEJO-LHE UM A LINDA SEMANA♥♥

  • Awesome!!

    Grandma Mary

  • This needs no words...Jan is absolutely at his best...Focus were,as far as I'm concerned, the best of those years.Moving Waves changed my life, changed the land I'm living in and it's my bible(as if I needed one...)

  • Brilliant album! Absolutely brilliant! Thanks for posting!!!!

Just got youtube access thru our TV and sound system and I've been introducing my wife (who was 10 when this was first recorded:) to Focus tonight . of course Hocus Pocus was first as I know her tastes and that she would like the unique vocals but then I told her about Jan and took here here:) She's stunned and amazed . You just have to love what these guys did. Anyone know if there is a live version of Mescaline?

    Cheers!

  • This remains one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever! It turned me on to Focus in 1974 - heard it on the radio Whistling Bob Harris - and it was truly beatutiful then and still is today. Saw the band last night in Cardiff. The new guitarist may not be Akkerman but is sooooo talented and needs to believe in his amazing ability. He is his own man and the new band is great entertainment - especially with Pierre van der Linden back - brilliant! This track and Focus are endless. Thanks guys!

  • For Prog Jazz rock fans: TriMatch-King !!!

A new band of prog : visit the Mousikos chanel !!!

    Cheers!!!

    And Thanks !!!!!

  • So perfection does excist.

  • is this what Heaven sounds like?

  • Thijs vocals give me goosebumps and I close my eyes and think of the woman that I love.

  • Wat een mooie sfeervolle plaat zeg!. Beetje jazzy/rock. Echt briljant.

  • The Mellotron really is the finishing touch ;-)

  • timeless

  • You're welcome!

    Spike...out

  • @spikestrike91

    paz

    Spike...out

    paz...Spike

  • No one sounded this clear and precise except the great Jan Akkermann back then !

  • Focus may have been a one hit wonder, but their non-hits were wonders.

  • Wonderful, my favourite.........I wish they were still around

  • @jutescrim they are! they are no tour and have alot of new videos on youtube!!

  • @jutescrim they are dude!

  • The guitar solos in this song never feature in "greatest guitar solo" polls. Just goes to show that all those polls are wrong.

  • true music from true musicians , not like nowadays..

  • Bomba!!! que buena musica, Thanks a Lot for this old good times

  • me trae muchos recuerdos este temaaa ;) jaja gracias my friend!

  • You're welcome!

  • Oh this was the first album I ever bought and this still sound as refreshing and as wonderful as when I first heard it Many thanks for sharing

  • You're welcome.

  • simple "i love this song" grate

  • Słucham muzyki mojej młodości. Myślalem, że ona umarła... Córka pokazała mi w swoim komputerze to czego ja słucham..!? Dobra muzyka jest wieczna..

I listen to the music of my youth. I thought she died ... The daughter has shown me in your computer what I'm listening ..!? Good music is eternal ..!?

  • Fantastisch!!!! Zag jan Akkermans vorig jaar oktober nog in The Royal Albert Hall tijdens the Heart of Mucic celebrations Prachtig!!!!!

  • for the longest time I thought this song was performed by Return to Forever

  • to zugrundig.

That is true, the song was wrtitten by solution, another great Dutch progressive band those days. They recorded it first and Focus made this beautiful cover. Tom Barlage was indeed saxophone player of Solution.

  • When i hear the introduction it's like being inside a dream you don't want to wake up from.

Vocals are great! Mystical in quality..It's ashame he can't sing like this anymore..

  • @Motherboard46 Your first sentence is spot on and describes my thoughts so beautifully. They were and still are so for beyond the reach of most and their music is timeless. They range from enchanting/hypnotic to manic/overpowering and can sweep you away to other places.

  • @111chazz I appreciate your reply 111 chazz..I had the opportunity to view yesterday focus playing in England 2009. Round the Gossip blew me away. I like Niels guitar work.. The vocals were not exactly the same as the studio version but "reality" sets in. Thjis will never sound they way he did 30 years ago but he does give a different flavor and texture in vocals which can also be appreciated as well..

It would be awsome one more time for another Original Focus reunion.. Do you agree?

  • @Motherboard46 Yes yes yes, please. He He!

  • @Motherboard46

    Well said.

  • @Motherboard46 search for gustavo cerati bocanada in youtube, the song is very similar, you may like it

  • @Motherboard46 A great way to describe the intensity of this song

  • Thanks for uploading ;)

  • You're welcome.

  • I'm still in high school despite what it says on my profile. anyways that isn't the point. I'm supposed to do an arrangement and chose this song to make a more orchestral version of this song. Don't worry it won't be butchered, the school band is damn good. To get to the question, does anybody know the chords to this song. The melody is very easy to figure out but I'm having difficulties. If anyone could help it would save me about a week of trying to find out these chords.

  • start and end parts- First chord basic notes - F Ab C Eb G Bb, 2nd chord basic notes - Eb Gb Bb Db F Ab, 3rd chord - Ab Cb Eb Gb Bb, 4th chord - Bb Db F Ab C, 5th chord - Db Fb Ab Cb Eb, 6th chord - same as 3rd 7th chord - B D F# A C# 8th - F# A C# E G# 9th - same as 1st 10th - Bb D F A C (base C) 11th - same as 1st there might be mistakes because I've taken them out by ear... middle part is longer but i might post it later
  • @aja0117 When you've completed your work, please post it on here for us all to listen to...Jim

  • Timetravellers. Classical,jazz,rock,lute,Django,flute

    ,Zappa adventure......

  • Great music isn't it? This song feels like it's flowing, like it's send from another dimension. I don't hear such melodic, experimentel, atmospheric and most of all emotional music today.

  • Well said Stefan! It really is hard to find music this rich and textured today. I think it may have something to do with the influences. The further that we get from the roots which influenced the pioneers such as this group the less invested we are in the music! Are you a Prince, Duke, Baron?

  • No ahah. I think we all are princes and princesses in essence. In a way that we all are special and deserve to be treated that way. Royal is more like a behaviour, it has nothing to do with kings or queens. I'm no fan of them either :D

  • kickass song :)

  • There is a certain beauty in the imperfection... this was my first ever album that I bought. Brilliant. Still sounds great today... how many bands playing now will sound this good in 35 years?!

  • @intrepidtraveler99 SOUNDS VERY PEACEFUL AS YOU SAID . I JUST SAW THE SINGERS FACIAL EXPRESSIONS ON HOCUS POCUS AND THERE VERY INTENSE LIKE DEFINETELY ON SOME STIMULANTS LIKE ESPRESSO OR BLACK BEAUTIES AND SHROOMS TOO. SOUNDS SO GREAT THOUGH AND FASTER THAN I THOUGHT.WHO IS JAN THE SINGER OR THE GUITARIST??

  • @intrepidtraveler99 Kaipa "In the wake of evolution" ?

  • Thjis van leer's voice is very surreal. it's not be expected that he can sing the high notes.. There is a band called Yellow brick road. The singer does a great job on Hocus pocus...

  • @ zugrundig: It does indeed refer to Tommy Barlage. The album sleeve says he wrote it.

  • You sir are correct and I will change the info section to reflect that! Thank You!

  • Brilliant, this is my favourite one. I went to see them a few months ago, sadly they didn't play this :(

  • Say, could anybody tell me if the title of this track refers in any way to Tommy Barlage, a saxophone player of another dutch band called "Solution". I don't know if there's any truth in it, but maybe someone might have the answer.

  • martinn138 answered your question but not as a reply so I thought I would expedite things. The title does indeed refer to Tommy Barlage! He wrote this small section of the song.

  • really great, but a mis-played note at 23 seconds ! oops

  • It may have been mis-picked but it is a proper note. This guy is so amazing but like anybody ( or should I say everybody) he makes mistakes!

  • @eamonosu: Happens with the exact same note at 2:39 again, or maybe it's intended to be played that way, after all?

  • Jan is a unique player and I wouldn't doubt that it's intended to be played that way! If you watchy the video that is listed first in the Related Videos section (I highly recommend it) you'll here him make a bunch of mistakes but It's still an awesome performance!

  • the best guitar of 70

  • Akkerman is indeed a very fine player... Even though a lot of Focus music tends to sound very classical , there si always a great feel to their songs as well...This solo in particular shows some pretty neat Roy Buchanan influences as well..

  • I see one of the main attractions to European "fusion" is the classical (or Eastern or non-blues or...) source - makes for a really rich contrast to the blues-soaked rest of rockdom. Having said that, Akkerman can be seen as a more than worthy successor to Hendrix, and he took the expression of the electric guitar into a new room of colour. This begs the question who has found the next room?

  • Akkerman, way ahead of all the others at the time. Page, May, Blackmore, Moore, all pretty neat. But Akkerman is a true original.
