  • I'm from a classical musical family and this reminds me of the old musician's joke: "Who do you think you are, Paganini?" No wonder Dad and my uncles had almost godlike respect for his music. All were professional violinists,

  • Comment removed

  • There have been rumours about Paganini that he didn't write these songs. He played them before they have been written into notes by his student... Is that true?

  • the simple piano part gives it humor

  • why so slow?

  • Como que o braço aguenta???

  • omg!!!

  • played this 3 months ago.... it was quite a tough job, but still, manageable. it just needs rhythmic and intonation accuracy, a relaxed right hand and you being in a good mood!

  • caterina valente did this by vocal, see on you tube...its fantastic!!!!!!!!

  • People, cut Paganini some slack on the simple piano part. First of all, if he had made it any more complex it would have clashed, of seemed like too much. And, he was mainly a violin player anyway. I play violin and can see how it would be hard to connect to complicated parts. -..- ah don't listen to me I'm just rambling cuz I'm so tired.

  • I wish it wasn't ONLY an audio...lol

not easy for the piano to FOLLOW ITZHAK ..::-)))

    ...UUUUFFF..!

  • antimusical...

  • METZUIAN ITZHAK, TOV ME'OD! MAZAL TOV!

  • wow. That is awesome. But i think this song should be played by trumpet. If paganini knows that trumpet can do that too, this song will be mean for trumpet.

  • WOW. That's all I can say. WOW.

  • Stunning.TY m for posting.

  • Absolutely great recording. Perlman is a true master of the violin. I still prefer Heifetz's rendering of it though.

  • My God, the spiccatto! Wow!

  • It amazes me that he's able to even think about doing dynamics while playing this.

  • @alvawhite

You practice it slowly until it is perfect and dynamics and interpretation are the first priority, execution is second and comes with technique. He is not thinking about dynamics, he is largely on autopilot thanks to MUCH practice on this piece. That's what people don't get about great performances. They take years to produce.

  • To be honest, I personally like the recording with Yehudi Menuhin more.

  • Correct. More force, i.e. amplitude has nothing to do with wavelength. Amplitude is amplitude, frequency is frequency. Basic physics. EOS.

  • nice play but as the scripet goes "'every generation is LESS then the one before'',pls to hear the version by micheal rabin

  • 挤出的声音。

  • @qujohn88 What!??

  • @qujohn88 いいえ、それはバイオリンである。

  • @foobarbe i dont understand dammt japennis,,,,,,

  • @qujohn88 How you liek my troll? I can't Chinese solly.

  • @milstein91 i actually agree with you this gets really annoying after a while

yes it is a great performance and a he's a masterful player but you really can't say it's a "good" piece

its more of a hard piece

  • actually, the more pressure you apply, the flatter it gets. because when u press, u are stretching the string and longer string = lower pitch

  • @mrsuperasianchild That has nothing to do with what they were talking about..

  • LOL l'annotazione.

  • @milstein91 ,and you would be someone who makes more intelligent pieces? GTFO.....ah ah

  • Sorry to say it this way, but this is just SICK man!

I'm a violinist myself and i still amaze this clarity and awesomeness

  • When Paganini wrote this piece, i think he must have used lots of energy on the violin notes. When he began to write the piano part, he was like "huh.... I'm so tired, lets end this real quick!!!"

  • I am sure he played every note..................

  • Wow! The piano part is so difficult!!

  • @TimAnders44 loooool

  • @TimAnders44 - I really can't stop laughing. Thank u for this :))) I'll surely sleep very well after I've read your comment. Thanks again :)

  • @TimAnders44 The piano is the moto perpetuo :omg: D:

  • @klucero22 say what ?? are you on drugs??

  • When you first hear this its so deceptive because the piano is so (sorry to use this phrase) LAUREL AND HARDY...But the violin is doing a thing that only a small little fraction of all the violins in the world will ever do. And that's because the operator is the mother of all violin players. There is no other way to say it...Maybe Mr Perlman is really from another planet. That would be another explanation that works. Maybe he was part of a genetic experiment. And it worked..

  • A little slow for my liking - lacks the jaw-dropping virtuosity that Ricci´s whirlwind interpretation delivers. Very closely miked, which makes it mercyless detail- and tonewise. Perlman is one my favorites for the classic concertos.

  • The reason Perlman's is longer is that he include a couple of "ralls" within the work for colour.

  • yes father O_O

  • HERMOZA INTERPRETACION¡¡ xD

  • Wow it is so awsome! I think he is the best person i have ever heard playing that so perfectly!

  • grande!!! grande!!! grande!!!! Itzhak....very very incredible!!!! thanksss :))

  • How come Menuhin does plays this thing in 3.02 and Perlman in 4+. Both are great but which is closer to the "original"???

    Any Ideas?

  • @outoftunefiddler because of the repeat...menuhin doesnt repeat first page.(Much harder with the repeat You gotta hold the spicatto 1 min longer) Heifetz:1st take with repeat and amazing bowing-differencies (stroke variety).Must listen!!

  • Amazing.

  • I was looking up amazing violinists and everyone was talking about Hilary Hahn, Michael Rabin and Joshua Bell, and how amazing they are. And then I find Perlman in the related videos of one and fell in love with the Violin and his playing. I don't want to make it seem like those others aren't good, but he just has amazing skill, and emotion. I can feel his songs. Perlman is a true hero.

  • This is not only about precision and accuracy, but also endurance...playing at this tempo without making a single mistake for more than 4 minutes, unimaginable concentration= =

    This is amazing!

  • @simonwongyh OH GOD YES. O_O; My arm is killing me by the end of the first page xD

  • i was planning to perform this but the speed and accuracy of perlman makes me want to push its performance by a few years....indeed spot on... masterful!!!

  • OH GODDAMN! go pearlman! definately my hero :)

  • Ma chi l'ha messo il fumetto? XD

Grande Perlman, ma serve dirlo?! *__*

  • un genio

  • i think i remember changing the channels on my tv and found him playing this at the white house

  • I love this...thank you for posting.

  • this is a very complicated and beautiful piece which i actually had the privilege of hearing first hand this past january at a recital in CalState U.

    never seizes to amaze me.

  • @RectusDominusMaximus "never ceases to amaze me"

  • its too dancy should sound more like one long phrase

  • it's because moto perpetuo means a thing(something) that constantly moving and continues to infinite, just like a bullet shot in the space, so that's the reason why the "fraseggio" never stop ;)

  • Comment removed

  • @disgorgeus perpetual motion

  • So proprio nu mast??

    Sei di napoli??

    XD

  • Just one word: UNBELIEVABLE!

  • PEARL-MAN !!!

What happened and people "fight" on here???

Some say .. be faster, because Menuhin is..

others...go to check on !..whoever !..

some even write in block letters ;-), saying they don't speak EngliCh !..:-)

I am with them WHO ADMIRE YOU !!!..period !

  • So clear, each note is perfectly pronounced.

  • @goethethegreat ohh yesss! :33 Is fantastic! <3

  • wow °_°''

  • His wrist spiccato is the best for me....

  • bravo KLucero22, thank you for the physics language : )

  • 183 bps

  • maestro

  • michael rabin and heifetz have better recordings.

this perlman's recording is too rough, not very well played, pressing the strings too hard.

perlman is an amazing violinist/performer, was a pleasure to be in his concerts.

  • could you please explain how the amount of force applied on the strings matter in the terms of the waveleangth/amplitude/clarity of the sound?

  • yes, more force = longer wavelength, louder, does not change amplitude and the clarity changes depending on where you place the bow o.O

  • It looked like you said that he was pressing his left hand fingers too hard on the strings.

  • OHHH THATS WHAT HE MEANT. no that sound that might appear to be rough comes from the bowing, not the left hand.

  • eh, i thought the he ment that perlman is applying to much force with his fingers on the strings' and no matter how i look at it the amound of force that the fingers apply dosent cange anything.

but now i see that he talked about the force the bow applies on the strings, and then, the more force, more tension on the strings and the shorter the wavelength. thank you, i didnt thought about it.

p.s. i do not know how to play a violin, or any musical instrument,in that matter.

  • o.O ok no prob. also, if you press too hard with ur fingers it changes the sound, it sounds kinda rough, and squeaky if you dont press hard enough but generally speaking you don't need to press too hard at all, especially when you get really high on the finger board where you just need to barely touch the string to make a nice sound

  • Comment removed

  • i disagree with the "more force=longer wavelength, louder" from a physics standpoint. More force= larger Amplitude which is why it's louder. a longer wavelength would actually decrease the pitch since pitch is directly proportional to frequency. Frequency is inversely proportional to wavelength. a longer the wavelength means there are fewer cycles completed in the same amount of time therefore, a longer wavelength=a lower frequency (pitch), shorter wavelength=higher frequency.

  • ok. you win. what u want?

  • CornDoctor, I believe touche would be the correct phrase.

  • Good for you go discuss einstein's videos not music.

  • Comment removed

  • Reply to KLucero22 about physic.

Applying more force in the bow will increase tension in the string and change the resonant frequency. So more force= shorter wavelenght. Amplitude will also be larger.

  • Amplitude may change, but surely frequency is determined by string length?

  • In fact two things influence frequency, the length and the tension in the string. We tune the instrument by adjusting the tension in the strings with the pegs. However, because of the force applied by the musician on the bow, the tension will vary. This variation remain limited and will not greatly affect the pitch exept if really large pressure are applied.

  • @gr445 Well yes, obviously when tuning, you apply the correct tension for the length of string used - it went without saying. Applying more energy won't cause a change of frequency,it will simply cause the string to vibrate more strongly. Or do you think it possible to force the string so far out of it's normal range of movement that it will effect a change of pitch? If so, you could only lengthen the string-lenthening it's wavelength, not shortening it as you told KLucero22.

  • I guess the change in tension is more important than the change in length in this case. As when you stretch a rubber band and make it vibrate, the pitch goes higher rather than lower. As I said, more pressure in bow does not have a great effect on pitch but if you are a violinist and have a chromatic tuner you can try it yourself. If you press whit all your force on the bow you can almost rise the note by a quarter tone.

  • If you have one long string it will do nothing. The string must have a "tightness" in order for it to illicit varying frequencies, which are administered by downward pressure of the left hand. Based on tightness, frequencies are proportional to the "length" dictated by the left hand. As the left hand moves into the higher registers, this causes a higher modulation. Respectively, the distance that the bow is to the bridge will affect the violin's dynamic (loud and soft).

  • Furthermore, if a longer string is utilized, such as a cello, then the spacing between the notes will increase distance-wise. In other words, the normal hand positions played on a cello are "larger" than a violin. Frequency is determined by resonance materials, length, and tension. So, yes, length has some part in it.

  • Why is everyone making this so wordy?

A string's pitch depends on the length, mass, and tension of the string. If you move the bow fast enough and push hard enough, the pitch gets sharper.

  • It is more complicated than you think it is.

  • @KLucero22 lol, I'm glad you "disagree"

    well put.

  • @KLucero22

please be my physics tutor!!! lol

  • @KLucero22 It's not a matter to disagree on, really. The definition of a longer wavelength is a lower frequency.

When more force is applied, wouldn't the string vibrate more widely? I've seen my G string vibrate really weirdly and produce a lower wobble before settling into a solid note. In general, though, I would be hesitant to say more force = lower note.

  • @KLucero22 oh my god, someone who knows what the hell they're talking about on youtube!

  • @KLucero22

You are absolutely correct. Amplitude and wavelength are not the same, and amplitude has no effect on wavelength.

  • @KLucero22 It's good to study physics even to understand music. Good comment.

  • @KLucero22 who said the opposite?

  • That's just basic knowledge any highschool precalc/physics student would know...

  • Lawl, and yet for all of your attempts at smarts i get the feeling you've only recently been introduced to integrals and derivatives if at all

  • @Morphae @Corndoctor and everyone else

I haven't visited this comments page since I first posted my comment regarding wavelengths and amplitude. As such, I'd like to sincerely apologize if my comment was interpreted as pretentious, arrogant, or in any way offensive. That was never my motivation. As a double major in materials science engineer and cello performance I love music, and find physics very interesting and satisfying as well.

  • @Morphae @Corndoctor

(continued) However, I never intended to turn this video's comments into an argument over who was right and for that, I really am sorry. Perlman's playing is truly amazing and that's really what this video should be about. One could analyze his music from a physics standpoint but I'm a firm believer that doing so takes away what makes music so universal and powerful. Do I sometimes think about physics when I play my music? Sure, I do. But most of the time,

  • @Morphae @Corndoctor

(continued, continued) I just study music as it is, and how it should be studied-as an art (a beautiful, profound and moving art at that) one that should be enjoyed for what it is, nothing less, nothing more. If I analyzed the music I heard as a result of a wave function every single time I attended a concert, I don't think I could possibly enjoy music. As such, I truly hope the comments can move beyond my comment last year to just appreciating Perlman's awesome-ness :)

  • @KLucero22 pitch isnt directly proportional to frequency; pitch IS frequency. Had to be said.

  • @Wiltonibanez not exactly. pitch is analogous to frequency the way color is analogous to frequency. frequency is simply a measure of the number of repeating events per unit time. pitch IS our interpretation of the number of oscillations per second we can hear in a sound wave and is proportional to the frequency of a sound wave, the same way color is a narrow band of frequency of the electromagnetic spectrum of light. but pitch is not exactly frequency, per se.

  • @Wiltonibanez in other words, frequency is an objective scientific measurement that can be used to indicate any number of measurements involving oscillations not specific to pitch. pitch is a manifestation of our own physical perception of the sound wave. i once was at a rehearsal where my stand partner and i were arguing in what key a certain song was. we both went to demonstrate the song on our instrument and both played the song with correct relative intervals, just in different keys.

  • @KLucero22 correct, love your answer

  • can't you find that out yourself?

unless you are a liberal arts person, that is, who would no doubt rather look for an argument than try to learn facts

  • Comment removed

  • everything you have said so far on this comments page suggests that you are a knowledge-less liberal arts person

whether you actually are a 20-25-yr-old liberal arts major is irrelevant; your personality is classifiable as such, and as a result your fecal matter is the least undesirable aspect of your net output

  • guys i believe qujohn can give us a reasonable explanation why he thinks itzhak perlman is a lousy player

  • 是的,没错。不过你好像只听过perlman拉琴阿,我一开始的感觉和你是一样的,被这人给虎住了,残疾人拉琴就是有问题:右手拉不开。

  • its cuz Perlman isn't from the motherland :P

  • everyone has their opinion

  • qujohn88, you know nothing you foolish bastard, perlman is the greatest in the world, how dare you insult a true master

  • :) , hahahaha,,

  • 请您说话有点教养好么?

  • 有史以来拉得最差的版本了,一点没生气,纯粹机械性的拉法

  • de ce in capriciul n.5 unii folosesc saltato?

  • what might be more important than who plays better is which player truley beleives in himself to where he's

not bothered by who plays better for me each person has their own flavor god made us that way how boring would it be if we all played exactly the same way

  • You people just need to calm down and listen to the music.

  • music?

  • Playing like that is only a gift from God.

  • it's not a gift from someone - say god -, it's the result of hard work, discipline, dedication and love for the wonderful art of music ;-) let's just enjoy Perlman's talent that he himself developed by spending hours and hours each and every day ... great version btw, thanks for the upload :-)

  • Go tell Perlman that his playing is not a gift from God - see what he tells you. Expect a slap.

  • I expect a good and intelligent conversation about practising routines, meaning of the composer's work.. how to acquire a great sound on the violin... stuff like that.. not some rude reaction like you probably would give.. I'm sure mr. Perlman has no reason to doubt his beliefs.. so he can't be bothered by a witty remark. you on the other hand; if you would slap me for that, I definitely wouldn't turn my other cheek but instead beat the crap out of you ;-) anyway, any comments on this music?

  • So why is there only 1 Perlman in 6 bilion population?''hard work, discipline, dedication and love for the wonderful art of music ''-there are a lot of people that do the same but they don t get closte to him,now you tell me why...

  • There are more people who have that name.. and there are more people who have developed their violin talent and made a name for themselves in the violin/music community.. V.Repin, H. Hahn, S. Accardo, S. Chang, S. Mintz.. well, you get the picture.. the people who aren't succesful in doing so.. just aren't lucky.. or aren't connected.. or aren't pushing hard enough. or a combination of these factors.. or did you really think it's because god didn't allow them ? lol

  • No....no darling....

Playing like that is practice practice practice practice and more practice!

    There is no another way...

  • OMG!!! I love his playing!!!!!

it's not an empty fast piece!!! so good playing!!!

  • I agree that this version is much better than Menuhin. It is clearer and more distinct. Speed has nothing to do with the piece

  • schweitz2171-Not nearly as good as Michael Rabin-available here on You Tube. Check it out.

  • i will check it out, but to me Perlman is the best thank you

  • schweitz2171-You may also want to check out Phillipe Hirschhorn and Josef Hassid while you are at it. Of Hassid Fritz Kreizler said-every 100 years a Heifetz comes along-every 200 years a Hassid.

  • i dont like perlman,,,,he has bad sound,,,

  • what on earth are you talking about. He is the best ever.

  • 那是你的看法,不是我的。:)

  • please respond in ENGLISH

  • 我是中国人,为什么要说英语,看不懂你就别看。我没义务和你说英语。 i dont speak englich,

  • I like Perlman pretty much, however every piece has it's violinist: Perlman for me is Bazzini, Paganini 1st concert, Brahms concert, but surely not Bach sonatas and partitas, Vivaldi four seasons, other Paganini concerts and caprices, whatever. Those pieces are better performed by other violinists.

  • Have you listened to any of his other performances?

  • Heifetz also goes back, and Joseph Lendvay as well..don't remember how Paganini himself played it..I was too little;-)..I DON'T THINK this piece is ALL about SPEED ,but about a PERPETUAL MOTION in a RAPID SPEED ..and ITZHAK PERLMAN !!! has just proved it :-)

    ALL STARS !!!

  • thank u professor of gayness!

  • haha at 1:02 he made a repeat back to the beginning where Munuhin went straight on that's why it's about a minute longer not because it was slower.

  • this is better than menuhins because menuhin rushes

  • The peice is actually suppose to be played in three minutes.

  • did paganini write on his music to play for 3 minutes? i'm guessing no. it is quite clear that perlman is better than menuhin, end of story!

  • haha perlman > all are you kidding me

  • hey, if perlman plays it in 4, its supposed to be played in 4!

  • i prefer menuchin version

menuchin plays this three times FASTERR!

still this is one of the best versions!

  • Ah....something about this song makes me so hapy ;D I love the picture of Itzhak smiling towards the end of the video. Something about his smile and the song combined make this piece oh so heart warming =D

  • dont say that about poor gero8909

  • troppo bello

  • Madre mía, me he tirado toda la obra con la boca abierta XD
