Part 1: There was no struggle between the followers of Christ and the establishment at the Crucifixion (Mk 14:50). The confrontation was between Jesus, the Jewish Messiah and the Leaders of the Jewish Nation. Jn 11:47-53 declares that the Jewish leaders rejected Jesus because they did not want to loose their power. Even Pilate recognized the envy of the Sanhedrin (Mk 15:10).
Part 2: Rome was not threatened by Jesus, rather Pilate was blackmailed by the Jewish leaders (Jn 19:12) and feared a riot (Matt 27:24). God used this confrontation as a stage to sacrifice His Son to make atonement for our sin (Acts 2:23). Pilate acted out of political motivation (Mk 15:15), but God killed His Son to satisfy His own wrath (Is 53:10). This is why Christ was murdered.
This short piece was part of a larger presentation which led up to the crucifixion itself, presented on Good Friday. Maybe if you had seen or participated in the entire presentation, your emotions would have been adequately stimulated for you to enjoy it...
Wait, so TSOwca, can you link the recording from the Sparrow record? Pretty please? I had it at one point but can't find it. I'm trying to wade through all the Bruce Dickinson iterations to no avail.
@JSC1401 You should listen to the recording only on the Sparrow record. It blew me away. I'm not sure it's pop music...plus, it's faith, and it's worship. This is how some people worship. David danced out of his clothes.
The followers of Christ mostly hid themselves at the time of the crucifixion!
Christ was not in conflict wih the establishment (he preached in the Temple at Jerusalem) but the establishment felt threatened by his modernistic preaching and new interpretation of the scriptures.
Oddly, the name of the song is "Man of Sorrows" :)
Its by Greg Nelson and Bob Farrell, and was never recorded on a "pop" cd. The only recording I know that exists is from the musical "Emmanuel" by Sparrow publishing. You can do a search for Emmanuel, sparrow, and find several sites that still sell the cd or music of the musical, though it and the score for it are out of print (after only 9 years).
Sadly, many church folks would rather have musical dreck than someting of substance, and much of the great work being done out there quickly falls by the wayside. This musical, and the precursor to it "Savior", were absolutley brilliant, and should have stood beside other great works by the masters for generations to come. Sigh...
(FYI - This is NOT a comment on contemporary worship/Christianmusic, much of which also is great. There has been good and bad in EVERY era)
Why not? So much worship music is more about "ME" than it is about god, and so much of the church rejects the fine arts it's pathetic.
Go to your church. During the worship time, count the number of times the words "I", "me", and "my" are used, in a way that does NOT cause us to ascend toward heaven. And prepare to be shocked!
Please, please, please tell me the artist of this song. I have been looking for this song for such a long time. Nobody seems to know who sang this song. Please, you have no idea how important this song is to me.
Such a moving song. My church used it in their Passion Play for years (with proper permission and royalties of course).
