@bbjornst07 A couple of problems with your comment. 1) I worked on the plane for 3 years and never knew the price tag (Classified). 2) Boeing didn't build the SR-71. 3) I kind of agree with your comment about the industrial complex, but even our military aircraft are not entirely built in the U.S. anymore. The big defense contractors outsource work overseas. Thanks to "free trade agreements."
This video is lame. I saw them take off back in the early eighties while TDY in Okinawa and once they leave the runway, they point straight up and are out of sight quick like! A thunderously exciting sight to say the least. It's curious to think what has replaced them since their retirement. Far more secret tech with far more awesome capabilities no doubt.
@JRTV14 The SR-71 Blackbird is powered by two Pratt & Whitney J-58 turbo-ramjets. In other words; its a cobination of a turbo jet engine and a certain speed and altitude the Ramjet kicks in.
Doubt they're used in the way intended (surveillance/spy air craft) due to the advances in satellites. Still, they could be used (although rarely.). You just never know...

I don't think most people understand that the entire SR-71 program was created simply to get a camera into position, and back again safely. An upgrade over the problematic U-2.

Just came for the music..but able to reveal a few facts about the plane...its an xrs 71 the video is the classified one from 92. Actually first mentiond in the us secondary scolar script from 1965 ...as type U-Bomber....although it never was a Bomber....but, compared to the document...from the past..this plane looks different....somehow there was a change in FORM in late 60ies...but what so ever....documents mention an blackproject..called u-bird..i guess thats it
USAF SAC (STRATCON) or strategic reconnaissance wing of the USAF commissioned Lockheed/Martin to design/build the USAF SAC SR-71 Blackbird to go 80,000 miles up into the stratosphere at U2-like levels but at well over 3 times the speed of sound. The thing that always amazed me as a kid was that it looked like something out of Star Wars, like it could just go into space, as close as you can get. I had a poster of the SR-71 as a kid not the more popular F-117A, you can't beat Mach 3.4+!

the one and only sonic boom that I've ever heard was over the town of durango co.about 15 yrs ago and it was the result of an sr-71 flying 50,000 ft. above. the sound was distinct as it was like no gun that I had ever fired,or any firecracker that I had ever set off.

Amazing machine... sometimes called a Black Bird so I get the music. YF-12-A was being flown by Chuck Yeager about the time I was born. We had a visit from an SR-71 at my primary duty station.. still don't think I should say where or when decades later. Amazed this footage is not classifed... awesome stuff for being 1950/60s technology. Note the tilted tail feathers like the F-18... some very space shuttle like movements in flight. Spikes in front of the engines were critical air control.
The only thing I find misleading about the video is that the SR71 has a turning radius the Size of Alabama and it needs to do a inflight refuel right after take off and just before landing

the one and only sonic boom that I've ever heard was over the town of durango co.about 15 yrs ago and it was the result of an sr-71 flying 50,000 ft. above. the sound was distinct as it was like no gun that I had ever fired,or any firecracker that I had ever set off.

You must have the SR71 confused with another aircraft.
Air Force paid about $34 million per plane
Just one of the SR-71s accumulated 2,981 flying hours and flew 942 total sorties (more than any other SR-71), including 257 operational missions.
I was lucky enough to see one of these on display(under armed guard) at an airshow back in the late 1970s. My stepdad was based at the Barksdale AFB.

Amazing machine... sometimes called a Black Bird so I get the music. YF-12-A was being flown by Chuck Yeager about the time I was born. We had a visit from an SR-71 at my primary duty station.. still don't think I should say where or when decades later. Amazed this footage is not classifed... awesome stuff for being 1950/60s technology. Note the tilted tail feathers like the F-18... some very space shuttle like movements in flight. Spikes in front of the engines were critical air control.

The only thing I find misleading about the video is that the SR71 has a turning radius the Size of Alabama and it needs to do a inflight refuel right after take off and just before landing
