9/10. This movie was great. The only problem I have with this movie is that I wish Astro would have learned about all his powers before the final fight. It got really annoying when he was fighting and he had just learned that he can fire energy blasts out of his hands and that he has machine guns in his butt. They could have easily had him learn these powers in the robot arena.
Personally I though Nicholas Cage was a terrible choice for Tenma. As I remember him, Tenma was stern and cold by nature and struggled to be a good father. After Tobi's death he starts to lean toward dementia and ultimately was the nuclear antagonist of the show. Nicholas Cage was too soft for me. Freddie Highmore however was perfect. The character he created was not only extremely charismatic if not sympathetic, but also a well balanced amalgam of the 1980s and 2003 versions of Astro.
I grew up with Astro Boy in 'the days'... but I didn't enjoy this movie as much as I had hoped. A littled disappointed if anything. Don't really know why... didn't really seem to fit the original AB story maybe?
But still... 3 out of 5 stars is probably fitting... and it was Astro Boy after all... so thumbs up!
I heard that the production for this movie was in production back in 1999 when sony bought the franchise. and I saw on wikipedia that Tetsuka himself wrote for this movie
One of the best things about this movie is that it looked so awesome. Some CGI movie characters look like plastic dolls and are uuugggllly. But the characters in Astro Boy look great and I think that's because they were made to look like the original characters in the manga. The backgrounds were cool too, they look sharp. This movie is just so kick, I love it. Seen it 4 times, going for five with my girlfriend this weekend.
the art style was exactly the same! At least for the main characters! Sheeesh! Now you're going to tell me Metropolis (the anime) looks gay too. The art style is completely unique and looks great!
I personally never cared for the character designs in Metropolis either and I LOVE that movie. Look it's nothing spiteful, every anime has its own personal style and I'm sorry but I just never cared for this particular style, it's not my cup of tea.
Maybe the art style looks better to you in 3D. Except for the supporting cast, the character designs are exactly the same just in 3D.
The only difference I noticed though was that there wasn't as much eyelash happening on the characters. Astroboy has some crazy eyelashes on the original design.
@Custom09 No, it really wasn't. Atom without eyelashes, sorry, just isn't Atom. Of course, the movie was adored in America because we think that boys who are cute or nice are gay. We sulleyed the pure angel that was Tetsuwan Atom.
This movie was basically reverse Battle Angel Alita.
The difference is that this movie starts in the floating city and the surface was a mystery, while in Alita, the story takes place on the surface in Scrap City and the flying city, Zalem, is the mystery.
Hmmm. Ok, I want to see Battle Angel Alita remade now. Would be miles better. To, I did like this movie.
im a pretty big fan of astro boy, i have all the series on dvd already and i thought this movie was great. im definatly gonna get it when it comes out on dvd. its a shame that fans automatically dont like it though just cause its a lil different. it woulda been nice if it would have done well in the box office but since it didnt i guess that just means no chance for a sequel D=
Not necessarily. Pixar's Cars was a "disappointment" in the Box Office but is getting a sequel due to it's high merchandise sales and HellBoy got a sequel due to DVD sales
Oh, and there's also worldwide gross to consider. It may have only made number 6 here, but in China it's Number 1, and is doing well in Canada and Australia (from what I've hear anyway)
I'm disappointed that this didn't do well in the theater though. I know Saw was going to beat it, but Paranormal activity was too. but I figured it wasn't going to lose to Where the wild things are so bad....unfortunately it did though.
origionally tobio dies in a car crash so dr.tenma builds a robot based on tobio and dr.tenma then grows fond of astro so he sells him to the circus and then dr.elefun takes him away from the cruel circus owner hamegg and gives toby a new name astro
that is the origional plot tobi was never recreated no he dies
actually a few liked it, only complant I heard was it wasn't as Dark as the original story. in fact you can't call this a ripping of the Jetson's because it came way before that with black and white cartoons.
the only anime I think in english that is older than Astro Boy is the first one I ever saw because of my stepdad finding them in a video store when I was 7: Gigantor!
30 second intro. FUCK ME!

That's like in the movie Artificial Intelligence, the scientist's son dies so he makes a robot copy.

The Astro in the Japanese version was redone with a model more similar to the Japanese design, rather than the "older" version in the US/HK version.

It reminds me a lot of the video game- Blue Dragon. The robots and the characters look very similiar.

ATLAS for astroboy 2

Yes, Astro Boy is built after the death of Doctor Tenma's son is killed - so it does follow the original manga and anime of the same name ^_^
I just saw it and the animation, story and action were all thought out very well!

@SweetGerri The names are interchangeable, but his real name is Atom. (Which is why his siblings' names are Uran[ium] and Cobalt)

well astro boy was around longer than Battle Angel Alita
MrTEZUKAFOREVER 2 years ago 2
the original astro boy storyline was completely different from the movie. There was no floating city or scrap town in the original astro boy.
the astro boy movie's plot was almost lifted from alita.
sc0pl355 2 years ago
yes but i was just saying it was around longer i thought you were sayin astro boy is a ripoff
MrTEZUKAFOREVER 2 years ago
Nah, I don't think Astroboy is a ripoff. I think the movie was unoriginal and could have been much better tho.
