dont know why people dislike this cuz this is in my opinion the best homemade version cuz the lens is removeable and replaceable. great job gave me a really good idea like yours
as long as it gets you a great video or pic who cares what it looks like. and i bet you spent way less then what they sell for now for a lens kit. also ppl it is only the housing that gets modified not the actual camera so no harm done. to many ppl focus on looks rather than quality and are so superficial. this truely is a corprate capitalist country.
@afo45td no I completely understand the point of it actually. I just don't get why he didn't just buy another camera in the first place if he wanted a flat lens. This is so dumb and it looks fucking horrible
first of all, the camera was bought 2 years ago, for underwater use ONLY (spearfishing) . Gopro did not inform puplic about focus problems in underwater use. The modification was built a few months later and before any commercial solution released. I don't care about the cameras' appearance, just for the right footage. If you want a "beautiful" camera, then go buy a SONY or whatever, not GoPro. The specific camera selected because its size was ideal to mount it on a speargun.
The housing modified 1,5 years ago. At this time there wasn't any solution for this focus problem. Only eyeofmine released a waterproof bag with a flat lens attached, but this kind of solution was not acceptable.
would it not be easier to place a small flat bit of plastic under the stock lens ring? I have one and cant remember from the last time i replaced my lens if it protrudes to much and also I haven't done any under water shooting either,
Just ordered my GoPro camera specifically for underwater use. I have seen at least two types of modifications to improve u/w image quality (the other slightly different but with the same outcome). Thanks for posting...it looks like an easy fix and will try it out but I wonder why GoPro has not figured this out and provided a fix?? Anyone have an answer?
GoPro original housing has curved ( "fish eye") lens and the underwater footage is out of focus. With this modification to "flat lens" the underwater footage is crystal clear. For underwater activities the modified flat lens is a must.
I'm building a DIY lens also. In defense of us DIY's all the professional fix's suffer clipping of the picture. I haven't found a so called pro version that is any good. My prototype so far has no clipping except when in R4 mode. Thanks for showing us your creation it has helped with building mine.
@caissonated The eye of mine lense has no vignette unless in r4 and photo mode, I still haven't seen a DIY or commercial fix that has R4 and photo mode with no issues. That probably what is holding up gopro with their official fix as they will have to make an entirely new housing to make all modes perfect.

Isn't it ironic that the fish eye lens can't focus on fish? ;)
