It's so sad that people who see a smiling dog think he's vicious. Some friends once lost their mail service because their dog kept smiling at the mail man.
I had two dalmatians, and I was curious why they smile. I came to conclusion, that it happens when they are excited. Sometimes it involves happiness, but sometimes a feeling of guilt and insecurity. Look at Denver the guilty dog, if you dont believe me: watch?v=B8ISzf2pryI :)
Heehee, I had a client once whose australian shepherd would smile...scared the wits out of me the first time I saw it because I approached their car to load something into it and was greeted by a big set of teeth! She was such a love. :)
ahhh the dally grin :) i adore the little snuffly noise they make. sadly my 2 dont do it but i had a foster dally that did it all the time :D very cute :)
Dalmatians are actually known for their 'Smarl' which is actually a sign of happyness. You can useually tell by the overall happy posture, leck of growling, and the strange 'mrl' noise they can make while doing this. Their one of the few dogs that 'smile'!
It is not taught. An individual dog either does it or doesn't--it doesn't even get passed from parent to pup, nor is necessarily present in all dogs raised in the same environment even if they have similar temperaments.
It is said to be most common among dalmatians, but is occasionally seen in a few other breeds as well. In any case, growling does not accompany it.
What is it about Dalmations and smiling? I have seen this alot when I have worked with this breed and they are usually female. Scary looking, but they're always really sweet.
I have owned Dalmatians for six years now and a couple of mine smile. It looks scary but it is the sign of utmost respect, submission, and love. What a lucky owner!

het is goed te weten dat dat geen bedreiging is soms. Alleen hoe onderscheid je het met wel een bedreiging.. Ik werk bij de dierenambulance.

My wiener dog does the same kind of "smile" when she's very happy to see us. It's very weird but not aggressive at all.

My Dal "smarls" at me when I get home, along with swinging her tail so hard I'm afraid her spotless butt will fall off.
