That shows in Stickshifts and Safetybelts. It also shows in their cover songs, a bit in I Will Survive which they've almost turned into an easy listening alternative, but also in Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps. For both the truth is they've taken a previously percieved female worry and turned it into the soft values of todays men.
While it shows in their songs that the members of Cake loves music, they still play and experiment with the music and gives it an edge that distances their music from the original genres, by adding sounds andmixing different genres.
I never knew the problems surrounding The Distance, so thanks for informing me with this video. I still very much like the song and wont change my mind. While agree that both Nugget and especially Italian Leather Sofa are very good songs, my favourite must be Stickshifts and Safetybelts. Even tho it's greatly inspired by country music, like all the other songs on the album Fashion Nuggets, it has an ironic or sarcastic distance to the music it portrays.
Dude, I listened to the WHOLE Fashion Nugget album last night and I must say, it is beautiful!! I love it, and agree with everything you have to say.. BTW, Gloria Gaynor did I will survive. XD
You've hit on a major throwback to my middle school days with this discography review dude. I'm very interested in what you'll have to say in your Prolonging The Magic review (their best by a long shot, imho). I used to listen to their records all the time and went to see them after they came out with Comfort Eagle, it was one of my first concerts. It's cool to see someone giving them a positive critique, as they're one of the most critically despised bands ever (which is lame, but, whatevs.)
I love Cake. As you'll see, I really don't have a problem with any of their recordings, I'm totally in love with them all. I didn't know they were a critically despised band though...fun fact for the day!
hey man, you"ll never guess what, u got me in to cake.. i never heard of them before until you started this discography and i absolutely luv the, so kuddos to that. anyways, keep up the good work and keep them videos comin
Albeit there is elements of Lou Reed and Chumba Wamba in there...but Hay! frackin brilliant. I love a band that stares at a well trodden footprint and wears the shoes well :) Great stuff. Lovin it :)) Consider this album bought. Thanks
Living in Sacramento I truly feel Cake sounds the way Sacramento feels. It's a big city that feels like a small town. Or as I like to call it "The Farm Ghetto."
dude, you need to improve your language skills -- especially if you want to do this for a living.

I'm from Argentina, and I just love Cake. I feel happy every time I listen to their music. It's a shame I'll never get to see them live =(
I also really like watching what you have to say about their albums. So congrats on your reviews.
Greetings from Argentina!!

Cake in my opinion is a kind of bad band name. But then again the music is more important then the band name.
fatrat600284 2 years ago
Really? I always liked the name. Kinda ties in with the fun factor for me. Usually think of cake at like, birthday parties or something.
