  • this was the best music of the whole game but i used to have trouble getting this far in the game just to hear it hehe

  • My favorite song of all the sonic songs. Nostalgia makes me cry.

  • I actually kind of like this version. The slower pace fits the track and stage.

  • This is the way I remember the song the most, kinda gets me to sleep... ;o don't know which version I prefer more, really! :)

  • Used to press A,up,A,down,A,left,A,right,A+B+C+start only to load this zone and hear the music. My favourite zone to play too...

  • @alfonsonishikawa American version is up, down, left, right, up, down, left, right, up, down, left, right, A+Start. Funny they would have different codes for different regions.

  • Europe hasn't got blast processing.

  • @evseal shut up yes we do

  • although i grew up with & prefer the pal version, forget the pal vs ntsc argument for just a moment........listen to that groovy BASSLINE!

  • I grew up with NTSC (fast) and I much prefer this in it's Pal version

  • I like both, considering they are the same song, but you'll know who grew up with what when they answer "Which is their favorite version of the song?"

  • i have the uk version, and mine is not slow like this, mine plays faster like thye US version...how come??

  • oh man, this is my childhood... remember when i came to this level at first i was like 6 years and never passed Labyrint zone before... it can only be described as full euphoric, i hope i will feel that again, atleast after this life maybe cuz my childhood was the best part of my life, everyone seemed so happy, my parents were young, never had any problems. now...full of problems and shit:S

  • I hate sonic, no offence. I like the franchise though. I love classic sonic, modern must die. And blaze, tails, amy, shadow and knuckles too. Srry no offence, i want to say my opinion

  • @Tuchiee I AGREE THEY NEED TO FUCKING PUT IN CLAHSIK SAWNIK AND GREEN HILL ZUNE IN 3D NOT THIS MODERN HENTAI FUCKING SHIT.

  • @Tuchiee you, my friend, are not an asshole... congratulations... happy birthday......yeah

  • @Tuchiee and whats so bad about modern sonic, i jst gotta know

  • @Dbenightcrawler One game, he turns into a WEREHOG wat. Another, he gets a HUMAN sidekick and must defeat a rampant genie wat. Don't even get me started on swords.

In all fairness, Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations are pretty cool guys, eh speeds around like retro sonic did and doesn't afraid of anything. It's just Sonic had a bullshit period.

  • @Mespritroth unleashed and black knight were cooler than ppl give them credit for at least unleashed they didnt make you werehog the full time and black knight sonic wasnt that bad if you were actually good at it, if youre a true sonic fan youll respect both classic sonic and modern sonic man, cant dis him for stuff you dont like :/

  • this is what happens when sonic hits a marijuana computer screen.

  • For me the NTSC music is better to play to but the PAL is better to just sit back and listen to. LOVE IT.

  • I can't get jiggy to the shit it too sloooow lol

  • I'm a big Sonic fan and i'm European too. I like this song in European version because Sonic needs something slow following him :D

  • How on earth did we cope with 50hz back in the day!? I can't run an emu on PAL because it feels like every game is stuck in treacle - we got a raw deal back then compared to JP/US but we didn't know any better - so it was ok :)

  • @bouffslave Don't generalize when you say that, speak for yourself. I'm European and i'm proud of what I grew up with. knowing years later that this game ran like someone pressed a VHS tape on fast-forward in NTSC, I still play it in good ol' 50Hz.

PAL 50Hz is superior to NTSC 60Hz anyway especially in colour, have you ever watched an NTSC DVD on a PAL television? The colours are terrible! How can Americans live with that god-awful red hue.

  • @FMYM2612 American NTSC television does look awful compared to PAL! the colour is really poor and washed out and the resolution is really blurry! with PAL you get a sharper crisper image with far superior clours! I don't know how it compares now but when it was analogue on a crt tele PAL was the clear winner! one reason is probably the NTSC colour system is about a decade older! the US got colour tv much earlier than we did

  • @katakisLives Hi, maybe u can answer a question slightly related to this for me pls? I've moved round a fair bit but my dvds are region 2..Anyways, I wanted a couple dvds that are R1. I bought one so I could test it on my sony dvd player (which is supposed to be multi region). But when I play the R1 disc the frame rate seems slightly slowed down on my european tv. Is this normal do you know? Not sure if it's the dvd player (tho it's new) and don't wanna be lied to by the store where I bought it!

  • @johnjnukemsheridan I've never owned a multi region DVD player or bought any foreign DVD's I'm sure the answers out there but I don't have it! I have heard anecdotally of this happening but I don't know enough to say for sure.

  • @katakisLives Well thanks for your reply though :) I've tried Googling it but can't seem to find out...maybe I've just not typed in the right combination of words! If this is a standard thing that happens when you play R1 discs on a PAL tv I can't understand why people from europe would continue to buy R1 dvds...I find it too annoying to be able to switch off and enjoy the movie lol :o/

  • @FMYM2612 I agree. I have a few games that can be played in NTSC and the other day I thought I'd try it. It was awful. The colours were OK, but the picture was way too blurry on one of the games I tried and the other game I tried played at a slightly faster speed. I'm glad I have PAL television.

  • Some one should do a Reggae version of this.

  • is there any explaination of why europes music is much slower

  • @MonoKrome44 Yes: The Europe version runs on 50Hz machines as opposed to 60Hz. Thus Sonic only runs at 87% speed.

EVERYTHING is slower / at 87% speed: The gameplay, Timer AND the music!.

  • @MonoKrome44 because up until the dreamcast pal consoles ran at 50 htz as opposed to 60htz for ntsc so everything including audio is slower. thats also why u used to have the black boarders on the screen where as ntsc ran fullscreen

  • reminds me of ABBA for some odd reason LOL. SONIC LIVES FOREVER!

  • @EuroMIX2 looks like we gots a hedgehog brony. Seems legit

  • @DFrank2k ._. That was just cruel..

  • Reminds me of an uhn tiss techno song.

  • They slowed it down? Bizarre...

  • American Version - Nice, glittering space zone. Gotta press on to beat Robotnik.

Europe Version - Very dreamy. No rush. Almost hypnotic...

  • @Wysthric yeah i know

  • @Wysthric so true....

  • Holy shit, Star Light feels sleepy in the PAL version.

  • It may be 20% slower, but it's also 20% cooler.

  • @EuroMIX2 Well, technically, it's 17.5% slower. =D

  • @dissident93

    I was rounding up. ;)

  • @EuroMIX2 Haha, fair enough.

  • @EuroMIX2 lol

    So true XD

  • @EuroMIX2 Eeyup.

  • MAaby thats why the GenMobile sounds different.

  • The music is slower becuase the actual game runs altogether slower, it runs in PAL. I know, I live in Europe and have this game for the Mega Drive.

  • STAR LIGHT SLOWED DOWN

It's like taking a shit that won't come out!

  • I favour the US version, yet I'm from the UK. (My Sonic Classics for DS are based on the US versions)

  • This Is Robotniks Version.... FAT, AND S-L-O-W.......

  • why the fuck are they all slow?

  • @benjamillion Read the comments filled up on this page.

  • @benjamillion Simply said, The MegaDrive runs at 50Hz, And the Genesis runs at 60Hz. As simple as that! While there still is a way to hack a MegaDrive to run at 60Hz, and Genesis at 50Hz. I personally prefer the MegaDrive's 50Hz.

  • @merkur32123 So why speed in Sonic 2 Europe is the same as the American ??

  • @Val664 In Sonic 2 and other games, when it detects that it's on a PAL MegaDrive, it automaticly increases the tempo of the music, so it plays like on a NTSC Megadrive!

  • @merkur32123 And is the game speed similar between Europe and US version, regardless of music ?

    Thanks for answering ! ;)

  • @Val664 All games (Including Sonic 2) are a bit slower on a PAL Megadrive system, But it's really not that noticeable.

  • @merkur32123 sonic 2 is the same speed on both NTSC and PAL

  • @NUFC4LIFE001 The gameplay is a bit slower! Of Sonic 2 even!

  • @merkur32123 ive played the original sonic 2 on the megadrive recently and the american version which is on the sonic collection ps2 so i know there the same speed

  • Comment removed

  • @Val664 only sonic game slower is sonic 1 on the megadrive

  • This sounds better in 50hz. It's a nighttime city level with stars, so slow music fits it perfectly.

  • This sounds loads better than the NTSC version. I wish there was the option to have the music like this on the Mega Collection for PS3.

  • @sonicKAI Please extend this on the european version? Or already have one?

  • im from scotland and dont remember it being this slow, im not gonna get my megadrive out just to see

  • Ahhh the tempo I grew up on =] *relaxed*

  • SonicKAI, can you extend the european sonic 1 songs?

  • So much nostalgia.....

  • I think I can call this my song.

And all you azmericans who whine that it's 'TOO FUCKING SLOWWWWW!!!!!!!!! AAAGHNIPPLES!!!!!!' can go cry in a hole.

  • tv's in europe run at 50hz vs the 60hz here in the us. The song should be the same. The person who made these videos may have not taken this fact in to account accidently slowing the song down.

  • ahh the memories

@turgo82 nope the songs are slower ive played both version

  • @TheJeli125 wow your are correct. I've found out that the US the Europe versions are the same cartridge. the game play is also slower. Well I did the test in and emulator that had the option for USA Japan and Europe. Of course using the appropriate versions of the game for the region. thanks

  • you can clearly hear the fact that they could only play 4 sounds at once (which is why, when a lot of sound effects play one after the other, some layers of the music might disappear)

  • Here in Australia just like Europe and UK we get an extra 9 seconds of this beautiful music track than the North American version.

Star Light Zone (Europe Version) = 0:51 full loop

Star Light Zone (USA / Japanese) version = 0:42 full loop

And they say we got the inferior version? The longer the music loop plays the better, it provides less repetitiveness and less elevator effect. (My opinion)

  • Extension please?

  • As an American player of this game, I think this sounds better slower.

-But I still wonder why they changed it...

  • @SuperFlameRing It was something about Pal genesis' or mega drives, being somehow slowly emulated than the American version.

  • is it just me? or does it sound better slower? huh, i guess sega must have the music fast because of its blast processing and whatnot, anyways, sounds way better

  • *falls asleep on keyboard*

    *wakes up*

    Is it over???

  • @Bobtailthecat haha :D ur funny xD this song is awsome

  • I will have to get my mega drive down from the loft and check. I'm from UK originally and still live here :p. Very open to being wrong, but the one that sways me is Scrap Brain Zone...I'm fairly sure I've never heard it that slow before, but I;d have to check it really.

  • It just seems to slow though for the pace of sonic

  • I've seen loads of comments about the slower music in the EU versions of this game and many others, particularly older games. It's fairly obvious why, since 60 Hz = 60 frames per second, but 50 Hz = 50 frames per second. Back when these games were made, I suppose developers didn't really consider these differences and so didn't scale the music.

Now, I live in the UK, and have the original Sonic 1 game. I've never heard any of the games' music this slow; I guess I grew playing the 'US version'.

  • [Continued] I've no idea why other people in EU have the slowed down version. I had a sega mega drive 2 [if there was any difference between a mega drive 1? I don't know anything about its hardware really]. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Japan is NTSC 60 Hz like the US, so the 'faster' versions are actually the 'proper' versions. This is all a bit odd, since I played all the old sonic games on a crappy little tiny TV which was most definitely NOT 60 Hz, but I played the 'faster' version.

  • [Continued x2] Nowadays I guess they just scale it automatically for 50 Hz [well, maybe not brand new titles, since pretty much all new TVs support 60 Hz in HD etc]. To me, they just all seem mega slow. They sound a bit more relaxing but it's relative I guess. The only one which I think is truly better slower, is Star Light Zone [this one].

  • @MithosCoA Q. Where did you live originally? You must be originally from America because you don't remember Sonic 1 being ''normal'' like this?

    Q. You have no idea why EU had the normal slowed down version? A. Because this is how it was back in 1991 in Europe, UK, New Zealand, Australia, South America and most of Asia. It felt perfectly normal to them and didn't seem slow at all, infact they could be saying the same thing about the Jap/USA versions. Why is this game wasted in 60Hz?

  • @MithosCoA This is the ''proper'' version buddy, the other one is on acid and drugs.

You do realise that alot of SEGA and Nintendo games back in the day were made in Europe? That means that they were intended for PAL 50Hz and were not converted properly for NTSC 60Hz. Playing a PAL 50Hz game in NTSC 60Hz results in acid-tripping music. I know this one was made in Japan for NTSC 60Hz but alot others that were made by SEGA of Europe were meant for PAL 50Hz, so you see it swings both ways.

  • @Adam060756 wait? so the european version of SONIC 1 IS the TRUE SONIC 1?! if yes then... IM NOT BADASS!!!

  • @waltdisney19282008 Sonic 1 was released i Europe and USA the exact same day, so they both are original, Unlike the japanese one

  • @xXkingrob99Xx what do you think...

  • It sounds better at this speed. I own the game still

  • @nxvznx NO IT ISN'T WHAT R U THINKING?! no offence ;)

  • Sounds like credits music when it's slow, like an overview of all your accomplishments.

  • I think this song is superior at this slower beat.

  • I don't know why as I've got a reasonably good connection, but SonicKAI's music themes will load without buffering on 240p and it will crash and buffer near the beginning on 360p.

I've been experiencing this for a while now....

  • @JasonBurrows1989 same. I have experienced it for years.

  • hahaha. good times.

  • listen to ths with good headphones and hear that gorgeous bass beat! :-D old sonic games always seem 2 have a damn gd bassline

  • Sonic can outrun the music!

  • i have just taken from my old sega. im so looking forward to play it again

  • I had the europe version and the music was slower, but the music wasn't quite this slow.

  • @LegitimatelyBaked no, micheal jackson was going to do music for Sonic 3, but a few 'incidents' happened round about that time, so he couldn't do it all.

  • because PAL is slower than NTSC

  • Is the europian version's music slower because the can't handle the fast American music?

  • @skwisgaarOWNS No, it's slower because European televisions had a slower framerate, so as a result the consoles were slower to compensate

  • @AutumnCrusader Actually, no. The consoles were all almost identical. The output is what was different. The PAL format had a higher resolution, but games run at 50fps, instead of 60. Hence, the slower music and gameplay.

  • @outlier1985 PAL televisions ran at 50i (25 frames per second) and NTSC at 60i (29.97 frames per second) (At the time, nowadays things have changed a little)

The games ran at differant speeds to compensate for the lower frame rate of the PAL televisions and the higher one of NTSC televisions

  • Now sex can be longer 4 me

  • There's not much difference in the music's at all besides the American version is faster and the European versions are slower... it's the same damn music... what difference does it make how fast it goes?

I know Sonic is supposed to be a fast hedgehog and all but that doesn't mean it has to have fast music as well...

Anyways... this version of Star Light I think is better, it sounds a lot calmer slowed down, which was the prupose of Star Light, it was that "chilled middle game zone".

  • Wow i didnt think 10Hz could make a diffrence! i like this better but i like both versions too

  • this music and "Scrap Brain Zone" only is better when its slower

  • Relax the feck down and don't flip the feck out. Yank here and i prefer this one. I just don't get why you Yanks MUST complaint about it bieng too slow all whilst typing like shet. I think that's what wrong with us is that we take shet TOO fast in this country. Fast food, fast music, fast driving, fass eating, fast moving, fast sex, fast relatiohships, fast trends, fast EVERY bloody thing, for crissake. No wonder we're so fecked up! ... I wanna fuck outta here..... -_-

  • It's after dusk and I'm walkin out in a urban city street with the sky night abundant with awesome Star Light and life.

  • I noticed no NTSC wankers whinge about the PAL 50Hz Star Light Zone? Why? What's the difference between this one and the other ones? Why does this one get respect and no complaints while the others are flooded with losers posting comments like:

    ''TOO SLOWWWWWWW!!!!!''

Seriously you haters out there (particularly Americans) need to grow up and accept that the whole world doesn't convert to American standards. Also it's called a fuckin' MEGA DRIVE not bullshit Genesis.

  • @JewelMaster100 u mad?

  • @JewelMaster100 chill out dude!

  • @JewelMaster100

Dude, I live in a PAL region, and even I prefer the american and japanese versions. This song is nice, but levels like Green Hill and Marble garden sound awful.

I do agree with you on the Mega Drive comment, however.

  • @KHsonicdude23 Your opinion is good because you're not basing it on fact. If you think it sounds better faster thats fine but don't base it on fact, when people base their opinions on fact it upsets everybody.

For some reason this track is the only one that doesn't get a knock back which is what I was originally pointing out.

My opinion: I think the entire video game sounds better in PAL 50hz. 60hz sounds wasted, awful and rushed, but i'm not basing my opinion on fact.

  • @KHsonicdude23 are you kidding? green hill sounds AMAZING in the european version. the american version is a bit too FAST.

  • @robokill387 The American version isn't a bit too fast, yours is a bit too slow :P

  • @robokill387 FALSE

theres no negative comments about green hill zone in this dojo.

  • @MrBurgundy76 the PAL green hill zone sounds really relaxing and calm, the american/japanese version doesn't have the same sound to it. btw, the version on youtube isn't exactly like what you hear in game, it's a bit off.

  • @robokill387 the "american version" is how it was originally supposed to sound but its a matter of preference i guess

  • @robokill387 it adds pace to it

  • @robokill387 maybe because its a fast game? you know...sonic...? fast? loop de loops? oatmeal?

  • I sounded like a dickhead in the previous comment sorry about that >_<

I love this song its much better slowed down, this is one of the songs I just love to relax to. <3 this song has a special place <3

oh btw to american viewers no the gameplay hasn't been slowed down in the european version, just the music honestly this is a good idea this is a nice song to chill out to since sega makes alot of hip hop music, rock, reggae and techno music in their game franchises like jet set radio etc.

  • This is how I'm used to it :D

  • Now you know why the PAL version music sounds better, you can hate the other songs but nothing can top this.

  • omg i think this song sounds soooo much better slower like this. The only song that sounds better slower from Sonic 1.

  • 0:36 - 0:54 is better than original :)

  • Oh, forgot to mention I'm from Argentina...

  • hahahah No problems in my Country, both PAL and NTSC here

  • Just to let everyone know, the gameplay in our PAL version isn't THAT slow as you would think compared to the original versions. The music is more slower, but the Gameplay is only a little bit slower that it doesn't make much of a difference! =)

They fixed everything in later PAL releases of Sonic 2, 3 & Knuckles (aswell as 3D & Spinball). =D

  • I'm an Electronic music junky and i find this shit just toootally fucking awesome, :P. This is SOO totally chill, oh my God, dude. I'm from the U.S and i find THIS version way more bad-ass than the faster American/Japanese version. Screw those, lol. Cheers!

  • I love this song but the video don't work very well at the beginning, could you tell me where I could download it please? I'm looking for the europe version. Thanks.

  • I much prefer the slower version has more effect to the level

  • Why is the European version slower?...

  • The music may be slow but Sonic's the name and speeds the game! (yes i took sonic 's SSBB taunt xD)

  • I swear our version wasn't THIS much slower. Unless the version released in the UK was different?

I shall go break out my console to check.

  • @RiiidgeRaacer So? Was it that slow?

  • this is my fave music from sonic the hedgehog, i love it

  • *yawn* Sleepy... -_- "Zzzzzzzzzz"

  • i have a friend who doesnt like sonic music, wth?!

    who doesnt like sonic music?!

    its great!

  • Thank god im british

  • this should have been the werehog stages theme song in sonic unleashed in apotos

  • So much better in this speed tbh! Its lovely music, and just sounds nice slow :D

  • @Mankey52 agree!

I prefer this version too, more relaxing then the american version

  • wow, the music is quite slower in the European version. kinda makes the Star Light Zone music a lot more relaxing. ^.^

  • Was the rest of the game slow?

  • the european version only have the music slow, the game runs at normal speed, i like the 2 music version, pal and ntsc

  • I like it when its nice and slow ^^

  • i love the slower verson, more laid back and reminds me of when i was a kid.

weird though that the european one is slower still sounds better.

  • The NTSC version can sound like this, my emulator makes it so I can change the language mid-game.

If there are any PAL gamers who emulate with Kega Fusion, set it to the NTSC/JAP regions for Sonic to be fast.

  • I can actually dig this one slower.

  • One that's actually worth hearing in another version!

  • This one sounds more....funky xD

  • I got a question.

    Why;s this version slower? o_O;
