Wanted to again thank the gentleman who shot this and allowed me to post this. I really enjoy these videos myself and think they are worth sharing. The SAAB 340 is a wonderful aircraft and i've found to be a joy to work on.
I wanted to once more remind anyone who wishes to post a comment to please keep them clean. If you feel the need to be profane please message the individual on the side and not in the comments. Nasty comments will be removed. Thanks again!
@AmielSeth821 i'll refer you to my response to FlyerJuan: It was humor. as in suppose to be funny. and i did refer to this as a "Wrong Turn" situation in the description that no one apparently reads anymore (not directed at any specific individual but to a general audience.
Dont get why the title "missed approach" it was great, i mean i dont fly a SAAB 340 and i dont know the aiport but the approach was acomplished right?
I see some critisizm of the pilots but it appears that visibility was relatively good and they had a good awareness of their surroundings when they turned. I don't think the plane was in any danger. They were human and corrected their error. The pilot flying nailed the landing. Looks like a difficult place to fly in and out of. It's not a milk run by any means.
lucky it isnt a night flight..otherwise how are the pilot gonna see the terrain tats so near to them??..they should make a go pull up n go around intead of making a drastic turn..
coming in mighty low. you just may need the altitude someday..., If ya screw up, gain altitude, you're already on a jam. Hang in there, and happy landings.
they just simply did the worse stupid error i have ever seen.. even with sky clear!!! when i was a student i went often there!!! and it s impossible to mistake!!! really bad bad bad standrad!!!
I am not a pilot. I have to say though I dont think there is any excuse for turning into the wrong inlet like that and actually setting off the terrain warning. Too low, too fast, very reckless looking.
I am a pilot. BE1900 captain to be exact, and I think they handled the mistake promptly and correctly. You should also realize that those warnings go off long before the projected impact with terrain, and are acceptable when in VFR conditions as long as the pilots maintain visual separation all obstacles.
How did I get a negative 4!? Anway, with all the high tech navigation tools they have now, how can you make a wrong turn? Oops? If they are not familiar with the error, use navigation. I just had a pretty strong feeling watching that that they were hot dogging with the plane.
Ok...Chuck Yeager wanna be...make that negative 5. You have a pretty strong feeling they were hot dogging the aircraft, but are not a pilot. How in the hell would you know?
Just because High Tech Nav equiptment is available doesn't mean that A it's always reliable and B that it's always installed on your aircraft. Even with all of today's technology a good pilot must be able to fly the plane with out these things. I disagree with the "hot dogging" comment.
These guys should have gone around and reconfigured... obvious they were unsure where the airport was and they were too low, too fast on approach...but they made it surprisingly
Well while i have nothing good to say about airbus (us Mechanics call em 'Scarebuses') I can say this isn't one. Sorry everyone, just am not a fan of the airbus lines so please don't take offense.
The Airbus vs Boeing is usually an argument by people who have never flown either. When I was growing up my old man was a Base Training Captain with Cathay on the A330/340 before going 747-400, none of the guys he flew with gave a shit. Having said that I had the choice between twotter or twotter!
I really don't have an issue one way or the other but I do tend to be more nervous on an Airbus although i have never had an expreience that was negative out side of the odd sounds they make.
OK, I have watched a couple of these videos now with these guys flying. I don't get something. Namely, why are they coming in so low from so far out, with such ominous terrain around? Seems to me if air traffic control is vectoring them in this way, they are doing a piss poor job.
These guys must have dreams in which a voice keeps saying, "Terrain. Terrain. Pull up. Pull up. Pull up!"
Man, that was tight on that left out turn. What was that? 60 - 70 degrees? Dayum. Sure glad I don't clean pilots seats for a living. I tell you what. In that situation I floorboard it and get some footage between me and terra firma. The aerobatic crap is for others, not for this old boy.
they should give the passengers a feed over the loud speaker "pull up, pull up... terrain, terrain"... that would make for some good inflight entertainment!!! LOL
You see - the airport approach plate states the procedure turns / altitude to fly in the event of a missed approach. This must be adhered to unless the crew feel this will cause any danger (as applies to every aspect of flying). The terrain warnings are there for low visability reasons, but the crews eyes are still the most important. Regardless - you must fly the aircraft safely within its envelope.
This video shows the missed approach procedure and second attempt at landing.
That's a Saab 340. I agree with someone's post, if GPWS says climb, then you shouldnt dick around and make fancy turns around mountains. I hope it wasn't a passenger revenue flight. Most western airlines you would probably get fired for this.
@mapapolitica123 .....have you ever heard the term visual controling??...the gpws can be making some sound advisories,,,,but you can see in the video they are not in IMC conditions, if you have VMC conditios you are not forced to do an gpws avoidance maneuver as long as you have full visual contact with the terrain....some airlines aprove this maneuvers in therir SOP´S for special airports.
i'm going to once again refer your comment to an earlier post i have already made. This is not an instructional video, I used the title missed approach in a jokeing mannor. Thank you.
nothing wrong with that. if you look at the map and imagine the approach it's not too hard to imagine mistaking the first inlet for the one they were after. The Flight Engineer was very kind to let me display this video. I have nothing but respect for the Polish. It isn't an easy approach. :)
That was not a "Missed Approch" A missed Approch is an Insterment flight term for when you break out of the clouds on an ILS approch too high and a safe landing is not feasable. At that point (TOGA) or Take Off And Go Around proceedures go into effect and the aircraft is givin a fix to hold untill they are vectord to try the approch again. A. They were not in Insterment conditions B. there was no Take off and go around. If you are not a pilot don't comment on things you know nothing about.
I do hope you are not directing that comment to me. As this is NOT a training course for Pilots it is for entertainment purposes only. The Title Missed Approach is a sarcastic remark. Please don't take things so serious.
I'm an A&P Mechanic and do know what i'm refering to btw. Have a pleasant day.
Having landed on that strip, and living only 12 miles from there, I can say that these guys went into the wrong gulf looking for the airport and realized that it was the next one ;)
colnehead, "great job by the flight crew"?!?!? Are you mental? Any Idea what the "pull up" warning might suggest they do? and what they DIDNT do? Not to mention getting themselves into that position in the first place...
Probably should've climbed when they first realized they were in the wrong bay. Attempting the sharp left turn at an altitude below peaks is reckless. It worked out okay, but the safe maneuver is to make a climbing right turn (turn right after reaching peak altitude) to restart the approach. Staying at 500 ft was unnecessary.
@dska22 Any plane is gonna have a good turning radius at a low speed like that, climbing was unnecessary and from the path they flew they were in a continous position from which to power up and climb out of it if necessary, but it never became necesary.
In useing the term "Missed Approach" I was indicating the fact that they entered the wrong inlet. A missed approach is missing the runway or not being able to land on a given pass. This was clearly both as there was no runway where they were starting their first approach hence the hard bank to port which as you can see is one heck of a "go around" LOL.
I think the missed approach refers to the fact that they turned into the first inlet by mistake... and had to do a very tight banking manouvre to get back out... hence the 'terrain alert'... A nice video yes...
