Great video, is it possible to use Magnesium sacrificial anodes for boats? (cathodic protection) I was informed by a suppler that they aren't pure magnesium. I know it says yours are from anodes aswel but I'd like to check with someone who seems to know what hes doing first.

Yeah, I did have a bit of a fizzle once. Just use a blender or a long extension chord and safety glasses.. make sure you are behind some cover.

Smelt them from window frames, cans, etc. Just go to a metal scrap yard and ask for aluminium.

Just phone around anode suppliers and plumbers. They should be able to sell them to you, or tell you who will sell them. Plumbing stores, hot water heaters, plumbers, anodes. Try those keywords. They don't normally recycle their Mg, so look to get it at maybe 10-20$ a kg.

If you choose to ballmill it you need a completely seperate barrel, just for magnalium. Yes, steel bearings would be a good choice...

Yeah, it is a good idea, but you can always wash out your normal ones anyway.

Try and use a steel coffee canister... they work best.

No, you have to cut the can and then peel it away.

The process varies due to time to set up, pack up, but the whole smelting might take 30-40min.

Great source for an excellent versatile metal powder.

You have to let it cool, and then just peel the can off. It becomes brittle and easy to pull off.

no, but you can break it up with a hammer, then coffee grind the smaller bits. that leaves it at about fine sand fineness, then you pop it in a ball mill for about 6-8hours with alumina media for the most powerful metal powder ever.

Yeah, check out my flash powder vids. They have fine MgAl, but you know when your MgAl is just uber when it burns and sparkles from a blowtorch flame. If you place a small pile on a screwdriver and light it with a blowtorch, it should go white and possibly explode in a poof of sparks.

If testing, make sure you wear safety glasses and gloves though, this shit burns hot.

Yes. Although your main concern would be insulating it, to keep the heat in. If you ask me, the best approach for MgAl is a charcoal chimney/brazier, or just a steel bucket with slits in the side.

Doesnt get too hot and its very easy to regulate the temp.
