@PAGANlNl nononononono I know there is another part to the concerto. I was following along with the sheet music and there are various places where he skips sections of the music. Did he cut them, or do I have a janky part? I got it for free so it could go either way
@soemad5, oh, sorry, I misinterpreted what you said. There are different editions of the concerto. He follows the one edited by Albrecht Schultz very closely. Another version, edited by Wilhelmj, has some additional passages that are not included in Schultz's. You can find both versions on IMSLP.
It's not that due to his music skills he becomes good at maths, is that maths and this kind o music have very much in common. Being that way, the musician's brain interconnects so well that he/she develops abilities founded in the functions of the corpus callosum, and the abstractions of the right hemisphere of the brain become well interpreted by the logical sequences developed by the left one. Music has it all: abstraction, logic, emotion, complexity, you name it.
@angelishify there certainly is a relationship between the two, not just violin, but piano, cello, all types of instruments. Musical scales and tones were first found by Pythagoras, the great mathematician. And think of it: sight-reading alone involves rhythm, notes, accents, dynamics, tempo, all these things. And on top of that, if you add musicality. Making true music that sends shivers up your spine is more complicated and difficult than anything in the world
paganini was a phenomenon unto himself there were NONE like him nor will there ever be any like him, not even great great violinists such as kreisler or saraste can even match him. any who play his violin have a mammoth task. mintz gives it his all here
I can only express appreciation for Mr. Mintz's performance of this Concerto, for the fact that the documentrary was made and that we are allowed such an intimate view of the violin, the work done on the instrument before the performance and how Mr. Mintz prepared beforehand. I feel that I have been allowed to be part of violin history in sharing this performance-I wish I could have been there.
I think its a good interpretation but too slow for my personal taste, id like to hear it 10-15bpm faster. Though i must admit i like when schlmo pulls back severelly to high light himself.
i wonder what any of you people actually know about the violin or paginini to even have these discussions.... it's all irrelevant. Paganini was the greatest of his time, de facto. Paganini gave violinists new techniques and ways to tune their violins, and through these things did his violin sounds so amazing. by the way, who says this is the real il canonne? it could be the exact copy that pagini himself only could tell the difference in sound...
Good point but no reason the violin to be fake. Any decent violinist can tell the difference between the sound quality of 2 violins and for that matter NO violinist should ever rely on how 'good' his violin is. A truly skilled violinist can make a pop sickle stick sing. Also...its a fact that the cannon is not really that great of a violin, its good, but its subpar compared to paganinis first violin, that is, if how the usual story goes is true about the cannon.
The last luthier did a terrible job on this violin. You can see on one of the videos Mintz looking at the violin closely and even says in italian that it doesn't sound just right. I think the sound post was placed in wrong.
They don't...it is sort of a tradition to at least play a performance of something Paganini did. Reginia Carter--the classical blues/ jazz violinist was the most recent choice--you should be able to hear clips of her CD on Amazon. I purchased the CD and it is audible that Il Cannon had the same "tone"--the powerful G and the bit of nasal tone demonstrated heard here--she said she had to play it FOREVER just to get it to "open" up from being stored so long. (NPR Radio broadcast)
Sorry, but the music in this peice bothers me. Musically there's so many other better violin concertos than this one . For starters, Paganini concerto No. 2.
It would be funny if legends are true and that violin is only a copy made by Villhaume :) but then again if it fooled Paganini it should be close enough. For a violin that is played so rarely, it sounds fairly decent.
The "sister" to this violin is ex-Carrodus, once owned by Paganini..also owned by Ossy Renardy and now in the hands of the symphony of Australia--it has been traced to the same block of wood as "Il Cannon"..this is how much they know about these violins--down to the rings in the wood and which instruments came from the same block. There is a copy that Paganini also loved, also in the museum, the one to which you refer. I think ex-Carrodus sounds better
This is warmup-practice,not professional performance.very slow bow, thin sound, lack of power and greatness...I mean, listen to Kogan and then listen to this...He absolutely muted the Cannon.Paganini would laugh at him.
double check performances where it says Kogan is playing Il Cannon..look for the white nut on the violin and listen characteristic sound of this violin. Some of the performances where it says he is playing "Il Cannon" are incorrect and he is playing his own violin--where you see him playing the one with the one with the white nut it too has this same nasal sound on some notes. The G on "Il Cannon" is cool but their own violins produce a more beautiful tone.
this is the first time im hearing the sound of "Il Cannone"...its very powerful just like how Paganini named it..but it lacks that sweetness in it.......
It would be very difficult to perform with a different violin-I would know my own blind folded and I am certain other violinist feel the same way...though I am sure they gave him time to get used to it; I don't even like to change bows. The fingerboard alone on this violin is larger, it would be a challenge
I knew this concerto had a lengthy orchestral opening before the solo! I think the CD I've been listening to lately is an abridged version of this concerto. Very strange.
Did he cut a lot in this performance?

@soemad5, yes, this was only half of the first movement. The entire concerto is much longer.

Should somebody that plays violin so good be also very good in the mathematics?
How is that with the general intelligence of extraordinary musicians?

I really don`t like his sound and interpretation.
Only when the Kogan plays this violin,it sounds good. But not this guy.
In my opinion Hirshhorn and Kogan are the best in this concerto.

i personally like Kogans Paganini more
its not that this one is bad, i mean, to even play this piece this good is just amazing, but... hmmm its kinda scratchy
and yeah its a performance so this style of playing projects, but i like Kogan's delicate sensitive playing better. it sounds cleaner.
