Replace the toner cartride. If that isn't the problem there are a few things it could be. Are you using an ADF (scanning/copying). If so the line is from something stuck to the scan glass. The skinny one far side of the machine. Gently scrape it off. If it's still there it may be in the fuser assy.

You're likely using an HP 1000 or a 1200 then. Replace the toner cartridge. Look in the phonebook for a local recycler. They're usualy under printers. They'll have a rebuilt one for much less than at the store. Likely around $55. If it's a brother printer you'll need to replace the drum unit not the toner.
