I'm a jazz bassist and I'm telling you all: if you wanna swing at fast tempos, you have to push! But, pushing shouldn't be confused with speeding up - that's with drummers do, ha ha. Only kidding... But seriously, one of the first compliments that I ever got when I first started playing jazz 22 years ago - and one of the first complaints that I heard about bassists - was that my 'time' was good whereas so many bass players dragged and slowed down. Anyway, that's my two cents on the issue...

I wish Trane didnt 'move on" from Giant Steps...I would have loved hearing many great Live versions of that piece with the great quartet. I know Trane got away from all those changes, but it would have been fantastic!

@PaGoO The bassist is Nat Reeves, and I wouldn't say he's "pushing" the time. His swing is consistently a head of the beat, he is locked with the time but he is ahead of it. Its a burnin swing.

Incredible! The bassist sound like he's really pushing the time, though. To my humble ears, anyway. Kirkland is unreal, sad he passed away

I can reassure you, bassist Nat Reeves is not pushing it at all. It's just... the bass mix is a bit louder as the drums, so it gives you the impression of being inaccurate. It's definetely not.
