Do you know the names of these scales? I already know the second is a blues pentatonic scale and I know all of those (except for the major ones which I'm kicking myself in the ass for not learning years ago) but I wanted to find the names of the first and second so I can learn all of the scales in every position.
The 3rd "Scale" is a descending in groups of 4 notes harmonic minor scale. Its the same scale as the 2nd so some people can get confused. You can apply that same motion into any scale.
Man, i'm not gay or anything, but.. THANKS MAN, I LOVE YOU FOR POSTING THIS SHIT! THIS IS SOME GOOD SHIT THAT'S HELPING ME OUT A LOT! Thanks man, cheers!
@FrenchKid1o1 the first scale is e harmonic minor, second is the blues scale(minor pentatonic with a flatted fifth) the last one sounds like a raga, hindu scale, slash is fond of those
well, I think Slash use all the scales every other guitarist is using. It´s his phrasing and tone which make them sound so unique. That´s the art of playing guitar folks. But thanks for posting.
His 2nd scale is a B Blues scale in 3rd position. It's not a B pentatonic scale as I'm seeing some people describe. If he were playing the pentatonic scale in the position shown in the video, he'd be playing a D Major Pentatonic scale in the 3rd position. What separates the two is the addition of a flatted 5th in the scale. A pentatonic scale only has 5 tones (hence the word: penta). Blues scale holds 6 tones (1, b3, 4, b5, 5, b7). Just clarifying :)
You should probably be alternate picking when practicing scales. You don't always have to use it but for timing, practicing with AP is the tried and true method for developing as player
I think youre really good at teaching, you brake it down so people can follow plus on the bonus you have tabs so its great for beginners to lol. Good job man!
B Pentatonic (with the blues scale note variation)
D Natural Minor
I think so anyway. Most blues licks and solos come from the second and third. Harmonic Minor scales made a lot of headway with the neo-calssical players in the 80's and I am sure that is where Slash picked it up. I don't think Joe Perry (Slash's mian influence) used that much, just blues and minor scales.
this is useless, you need to say the mode and the note key, there is no point in just copying at memory some positions and repeat, that's the last thing Slash would teach a newbie to do with a guitar.
@starpier You're totally right. Unless he tells us what key he's playing in, the scales he is playing could be anything. Take the second scale for instance, it could either be a B Minor blues scale or a D Major blues scale.
Ive heard him play the D Harmonic Minor scale loads but when he does his bends and moves more up the neck, i dnoo where to play? Do i need to learn all of the notes on the neck first or what? Thanks
@xXSlashBoiXx I think you are right, scales in guitar are better used if learned on the whole fretboard, or at least up to the 12th fret since it will just repeat itself anyway. Also you won't use the whole scale in a musical context, just a 'scale fragment', or better yet try to copy his licks on those scales and modify them a bit in order to 'own' them.
I never thought Slash uses any kind of scales beside a few pentatonic licks. His playing style seems so random and out of place at times, yet it always sounds great. :D
i really needed to get out of the minor pentatonic/blues scale. And slash is my favorite guitarist. And now i have these scales, i can play half as good as slash.... maybe a quarter. anyways man, these scales really help me alot and i can feel im getting better... thank you so much!
can someone please tab scale 3 please! i kno its on there but i cant see it because it wont show up clearly on my cellphone and my computer is messed up so i cant see it on there. ive been looking everywere for this, slash does it on the guitar world video. so please someone tab.
3rd one is like a pattern thing off the harmonic minor. i have a question though, anyone know that scale that sounds real bluesy and its in loads of songs, but it sounds like its a major key?i never figured that one out.
DUH... i finally figured out all the notes that slash uses in most of his songs. Obviously the harmonic minor and natural minor are the same except the 7th and flat 7th respectively. he uses E flat tuning with E flat minor and he uses the 7th and flat 7th whenever, changing between them. Also when you see slash solo he'll play three semitones in a row which explains the D and D Flat notes like the very end of nightrain in the fade. And it is the key for Sweet Child o Mine.
Hey does any1 no the name of those scales and what key they are in? Im pretty sure the second one is blue minor in B but i dont know about the other 2 thanks
you can call it just the blues scale...pentatonic minor blues is redundant. the last one I want to say is phrygian. It could just be harmonic minor again though
if u have read the slash biography he tells you that for a couple of months he had guitar lessons, but he felt that he learned all he could obtain of knowledge so he quit. also how can u not use scales. werll maybe if ur lucky u can find the right notes u hear in ur head. but slash mostly for soloing solos or songs in the minor pentatonic scale, the natural and enharmonic minor scales, major scale and some modes. the beginning riff in sweet child o' mine is in a minor pentatonic scales. duh.
@GibsonGuitarist1022 Not true eddie van halen never learned scales and also even if you dont know scales while your playing after a while youll develope an ear for what works well in licks
@guitarman104 Maybe he didn't learn them right away as he started learning to play guitar, but you can rest well assured by the time Van Halen formed and started writing their own songs, he knew his scales and theory. Not only scales, but chords as well, such as triads. He definitely knew scales, chords, and theory. Same deal for him, he CANNOT play the way he does if he didn't know scales.
@guitarman104 That is not true dude. Eddie had studied classical piano BEFORE starting to play guitar. And his father was a jazz clarinet player. Alex had piano lessons too. You can bet your ass, he knew plenty or standard theory. Eddie always bullshitted his knowledge and techniques in his interviews back then just to screw with people who were trying to copy him. Like overdriving an amp with a Variac, That would cause amps to blow up. He admitted all that stuff was lies later on.
Slash actually uses a lot of the blues scale and a lot of blues licks if you listen. I dont think there is a single guitarist who doesnt use the blues scale, or pentatonic te be correct, with the blues note added.
No the first one is definately the harmonic minor, even though the tab is wrong for it lol.
Idk, it sounds more dissonaint/phrygian like to me. But I can't tell because the guy decided he should put the pattern up instead of the actual scale...which is what everyone is looking for...
But anyway, it could just be the harmonic minor scale again and this guy just doesn't know what he's doing lol
he DOES NOT he plays blues guitar and even says it himself, he hears something in his head, and plays it thats how he got his style it has nothing to do with scales
its just that blues scales are the backbone of that type of music in the first place so obviously some fuckhead like u is gonna go out naming all the fucking scales and tying it to his playing cuz u think ur some kind of fucking GENIUS
dude ill go at you all day with this. i understand he plays blues, but listen to the solo in double talkin jive and tell me hes has never used a scale to come up with that solo. i understand he hears something in his head and plays it, thats how most songs are written but you cant just play without having a sense of what to do and what to use. Slash also says HIMSELF as a kid he had a book of scales and practiced them redundantly. And if you play so well hit me up with a video of yourself playin
dude ur a retard he does use scales otherwise he wouldnt beable to solo. in the video response when slash says he doesnt practice scales he means he doesnt sit there going throught the scale up and down major scale pentatonic minor scale harmonic minor scale whatever it may be but he just solos through thoise scales and this guy is showing u the nes he uses mainly like the first was used alot in sweetchild of mine the harmonic minor and then yeah what evr key u put it in for that case e flat
he was goofing off playing what came to him and what he thought was a circus theme im not arguing what he plays comes in the form of scales and do u know why?
because ANY kind of blues rock solo is blues scaled influenced
my argument is that he doesnt learn a scale and then makes a solo out of it this shithead ^^ techdeckkin watever says
For christ sake give the guy a break, he took time out of his life to create a video to try and help people learn. Unless you're doing the same but better, you have no say. Try doing something useful like creating, instead of attempting to destroy.
I reckon you've done a good job mate, keep it up : ).
You have got to be the most ignorant and incredibly stupid person I've ever come across in my entire life. Of course he knows what fucking scale he's in. That's how ANY FUCKING GUITAR PLAYER KNOWS WHAT SOUND THEY WANT TO MAKE. BECAUSE THEY KNOW THE SCALE THAT MAKES THAT FUCKING SOUND. JESUS FUCKING CHRIST
thanks - ive been ryin to work his scales out for ages (i knew number 2 but that was it.) now to find out dimebag's scales (wish me luck - ill need it.)
Do you know the names of these scales? I already know the second is a blues pentatonic scale and I know all of those (except for the major ones which I'm kicking myself in the ass for not learning years ago) but I wanted to find the names of the first and second so I can learn all of the scales in every position.

he was goofing off playing what came to him and what he thought was a circus theme im not arguing what he plays comes in the form of scales and do u know why?
because ANY kind of blues rock solo is blues scaled influenced
my argument is that he doesnt learn a scale and then makes a solo out of it this shithead ^^ techdeckkin watever says
''im teaching u three scales slash USES''
thats why i said it
