In all honesty, the Glee character is really offensive. Might as well make the kid a pedophile and sexual deviant as well. I mean, a lot of people think that about LGBTQ+, so why not add that? That's what his character is based off of, right? Stereotypes?
I totally agree, when you don't know one or several people in a "minority" and they appear on TV/in magazines etc. people see them and label not only them but the entire "group" this can be good/bad for the "group" depending on how this/these person/people act. It either shouldn't matter in a show (but it often does cous they have the "the" ... guy/girl) or it should be left out. I hope you have a great day and I hope I didn't misunderstand your opinion. :)
You are absolutely right. Why bother having a gay character on the show if it just perpetuates all the stereotypes of gay individuals and the queer community? We try so hard to rid ourselves of these tired, cliche stigmas and it's a shame that one of the most popular shows on tv, all about musical theater no less, chooses to portray it's "gay" as a cry-baby atheist loser.
I agree to a certain extent, I do feel like he might have some 'representation' however I think it's up to society to be open minded and judge people on an individual basis, not stereotypes or what they see on TV :)
Hey Miss Honey!! That is the truth! Media is sooo over-representational and it's very messed up when people look at media and don't have an other way to learn about the subjects represented. Keep your mind open and right! :D
WOAH. I didn't realize this until I saw this right now and got really confused, but I actually somehow missed this episode of glee. Thanks for bringing this to my attention!!
I think you actually handled that beautifully. I hesitate to say this, because so many people are fond of kurt, but anytime I've tried to watch the show I'm disappointed in how they handle his character. Hearing this just reconfirms my worry that idk . . .maybe any light shed on gays is positive, but I worry that glee might do more harm than good sometimes.
man i totally totally agree with you, cause ive seen it happen! It's so sad and ignorant that people are so fast to generalize and categorize for their own ease....
I absolutely love how respectful you are. And, whether your perception of the stereotype is good or bad, it's indeed too touchy of a subject to be placed on a character like Kurt. And having gay religious friends makes me agree with you even more.
hey! I hadn't seen this video! :S About the topic, I totally agree, when I saw that episode I was like, wtf? and what you said about the news interviewing the buffoon... you stole the word from me!! I love you, agree completely! hugs from Argentina
Albeit a stereotype, I find atheism among gays to be one of the "positive" stereotypes. Religion and negativity correlate. I mean, this is like when butch gay males get upset when fem queens like us are portrayed in the media. Think about it.
well, i clicked on this video expecting to hear just crap, but what you said it really true.
when you spotlight one stereotype, it speaks for the entire group, and i think they made a mistake by bringing in such a heavy topic like religion and making that a character trait of kurts.
it would be the same way if he was really religious. it paints the image only one color, when there is a multitude of people out there.
I think that it's one thing to fill a stereotype because it's the stereotype.. but it's another to be who you are and that person just so happens to fall into a stereotype. i agree that the media does feed into stereotypes... but i feel like they do this for the money and audiences.
i completely agree with what you're saying. BUT if he were to be religious it would also be inferring that the gay community is religious. whether its a stereotype or not, it is still true that most of the gay community is not spiritual because of gay hate among religion. also, you saying that it is not good for the gay community, i would imagine most would want to be represented as non-religious as that is actually the case. im not disagreeing with you, im just letting you know my opinion.:) x
I was distracted for at least half the video by the green nail polish lol awesome, but I don't watch TV shows, so I don't know the series, but I understand what you are saying. I am not Christian, however, people like to play into the stereotype that "God hates gays" and "You can't be Christian is you're gay" Religion is a personal choice, not something that sexual orientation has anything to do with. TV loves playing into silly stereotypes
I totally agree, people are so quick to judge and sometimes we have to watch what we as people say and do. It's a part of life and people will not care where you are from or what life you have or had and will deem you good or bad. The proof is how those peoples' response
completely true. anyone that says "it's only one person" doesn't understand that there are people out there who have never MET a gay person or anyone else from any group of people. justine made me watch queer as folk once before and i thought it was disgusting because of how they portrayed everyone. i mean okay, it's a drama, it's a tv show, but if someone just flipped it on and that was their first impression of gay people, that's the impression that would stick in their minds.
I can definately see your point. However, what is the alternative to representing such characters as whatever their written personality would dictate? In other words, should all "token" characters be a complete counter to the stereotype of what they are "tokens" for? The example being the South Park character named Token, who is a total anti-stereotype? Isn't it just as ridiculous (and perhaps the point of the Token character on SP) to expect such a character to act any particular way?
I agree that minority characters represent the whole of their people to an extent. With that in mind, I don't see why it's negative that he doesn't believe in god; you seem to suggest that this is an embarrassing thing! Would there be a problem if the character believed in god? He would still be representing the beliefs of a people. I would much rather a gay character perpetuate the stereotype of gays being non-religious, as these religions are offensive to LGBTQs, than to promote archaic dogma.
@tylurlee Religion is a touchy subject. People get really into/angry from both sides. Believers and non-believers are very passionate about the subject. I just thought that it should have be left out of his story line altogether, but if they were going to have it in they should have had another gay that thought the opposite just to have balance.
@tylurlee You missed the WHOLE point. I was saying that it should have been left out of his storyline period. Or that they should have had another gay on the opposite side so that it was balanced.
@tylurlee I agree. It's rare to see anyone expressing the non theistic viewpoint so I'm happy if someone on glee said he didn't believe in god. I don't think it's a bad stereotype at all. I'm proud that LGBT people tend to be less religious than the general population. That said I really like cmaxxoxbiitch's video. He discusses the subject in a thoughtful way although I disagree with his conclusion.
I don't often watch your videos, but I had to comment:
I felt the exact same way watching the episode. I know so many gays, being one myself (but a strong believer in God), and I know many of them (but certainly not all) don't believe in God b/c of the way other believers portray him. Kurt's character being atheist is playing into a stereotype that just made me so angry. They could have either left it out or found a different way to spin it.
Hopefully the person they cast as his bf counters.
i think it makes sense in the context of the show for Kurt to be atheist, and I think it was more about his journey towards feeling some kind of hope or faith in his life, which for him was hope and faith in his friends in the club. Even in the episode after that when Rachel comes up to him and is talking to him about how she sees he's lonely and all that, it's about getting him to start to open up and kind of drop the veil he's been wearing for so long.
I completely agree with you, TV writers must be careful when giving life to a minority member cause they perpetuate stereotypes, but, having to be this careful so ignorant people wont judge a whole group by a tv character is a big problem also. People shouldn't be defined by their race or sexual orientation, (like in your I am video) a gay person should be able to express his/her wiews without worrying about the wellbeing of the community. This things harm our freedom, anyones freedom
I remember thinking the same thing as I was watching that episode, but didn't really think anything of it until you brought it up again in this video. I think the same could be said for any minority portrayed by the media.
It's actualy funny, because when i watch this episode, when Mercedes sung a gospel song for Kurt it was for me like "you don't believe in god, but god loves you anyway". Let's say your gay (daaaa) and society is homophobic - this song was like a date with a girl, to please other peoples, and Kurt beliefs ... doesn't matter. And when i thought that episode was to religious and fanatic, you said it was to laic. Funny, isn't it?
I can appreciate both sides of it. Yes it cast a bad shadow for people who dont know any people from whichever minority is being portrayed. However the fact that so many people dont view one character as a group representative and understand that people are all different is good. While they may need to learn that other people still do think that way, I think its a good sign and should be encouraged that so many dont see it like that. :)
i absolutley agree with you! you voiced your opinion well and im glad it bothered you enough to speak about it. hopefully people will understand and respect your opinion like i do. it truly bothers me when gays are seen as "people who hate god", thus making kurt's actions inappropiate, however if there was another gay student who had a different opinion of life it would have made the episode more "comforting"
You cant control mainstream culture , but you can control your own opinions and thoughts ..
I do respect you divulging your feeling about this however ,. because not many people talk about it . and you have an open, balanced and deep analysis .. and i think . its good to think ! and stimulate thought because most dont think twice about their consumption of t.v
I do agree with you. we need to remember that "television is a helluva drug". people get a lot of negative information about others from what they view on tv. that's why I hate how some ppl are portrayed on tv for others to see and really think that the group is actually like that. people have to look beyond that and remember that it's just that TV. c'mon now we have to think beyond the sterotypes.
I AGREE WITH YOU TOTALLY ABOUT THE GLEE CHARACTER.TRUE,YOU CAN SAY TILL THE COWS COME HOME THAT HE IS ONLY SPEAKING FOR HIMSELF NOT A WHOLE COMMUNITY,BUT,MOST PEOPLE DONT THINK THAT DEEP INTO IT.AND FOR THOSE AGAINST GAY PEOPLE,THEY ARE FIRST TO BELIEVE ANY RIDICULOUS STEREOTYPE THEY SEE OR HEAR IT ONLY GIVES THEM MORE AMMO.TV NEEDS TO PORTRAY ON THEIR SHOWS WHAT THEY ALREADY KNOW,THAT A BROAD AUDIENCE THAT DOES NOT ALWAYS READ BETWEEN THE LINES,BUT TAKES WHAT THEY ARE GIVEN...
Leaving it simple...I know what you mean. Lolz. Love how it took a whole vlog for others to get it. But its cool. I actually just started watching glee and am totally still working on the first season but I have a feeling that when I get to this episode...I'll have a lot to say about it too. :)
I really appreciate how respectful you are when you are voicing your opinions. Thank you for it! This is how we can come to understand each other, and move the human race forward. :)
I was also bothered by the portrayal Kurt in this episode. Shows like Glee have a responsibility to change people's ideas about stereotypes. I agree that if there was another gay character to represent the other side, it would have been better. Kurt is supposed to have a love interest later in the season - they could have posed God questions then...Kurt doesn't believe, but his bf does. People are defensive of Glee just because its all the rage. Great thoughts in this video - thanks for sharing!
I'm a gay christian and I love that Kurt stood his own ground in regards to his beliefs. Maybe he'll change maybe not. Viewers who judge all gays based on him are ignorant anyway. Like others here have mentioned, the shows writers are introducing a new gay character this season. Hopefully that character will represent the other side of the spectrum.
I can actually provide a support for your statement. I moved to Texas for a year with my brother (Bro in Military) and he introduced me to a couple of his friends, but he would always say I am his older gay brother. Which they were surprised and a lot of them intrigued and started asking me personal questions. One of his friends made a comment to me 'he never picture a Latin Gay guy like me, educated, civil, honest, etc...' he always assumed we were all ghetto, flamboyant, sluts.
I totally understand your point 100%, however that's Kurt's character. He's always been very logical and calculating, also he was depressed because of what happened to his dad. People in general who are not Christians tend to have a negative attitude towards those who push the prayer issue on them regardless of whether they are gay or straight.
Also this IS the attitude of many young gay people who have not learned yet that being gay and being religious are not opposites. I was like that too.
@AdamKaoru I'm not saying that he was right or wrong for feeling that way or that he doesn't represent a number of people in & out of the gay community. I'm just feel that the only Gay character should not be put in the middle of the religion discussion.
Right but they shouldn't tip toe around it should they? I think it was totally in line with Kurt's character. It may be true that Kurt is representative of gay people within the context of Glee, however he shouldn't be perfect, and they shouldn't have to adhere or conform to what people want them to. And Kurt also has many redeemable qualities, and a supportive father which is uncharacteristic of gay teens..
I totally agree with everything you are saying. My best friend (whom is gay) and I are watching your video together and we think that you are amazing for speaking your mind on this subject. And we both appreciate you defending not only gays but everyone!!! We love you <3
But you already know how I feel about this. We all know that people aren't the same but sadly when there is a SINGLE representation for one form of minority people then generalize it for the entire group. It makes me upset that people don't realize that, and maybe it's a good thing they are a little jaded because then you live life a little happier. But even though we live life aloof to some of these things we can't live life through rose colored glasses.
I myself tell people i am atheist [tho i was raised catholic] and know other gays who don't practice religion as well but i know there are gays who are religious are out there and i totally see where you are coming from about the media always making gay characters dislike religion almost to an extreme. it would great if this so called new gay character [i think he's supposed to end up as kurt's love interest] would come out/be open as a gay man and be the opposite of the gay stereotype.
I totally agree with you!! Yikes, that makes me sad. Here's hoping that the storyline will show Kurt growing into, you know, an adult . I've noticed Kurt's character is a shit representation for gay men. I'd never want to be Kurt's friend. When I used to watch Glee, he was in lust with a straight man and led on his 'friend' into thinking he liked her. A while back, I had a dream the 5AGs gave Kurt a talking to. LOL
I love that Kurt is not perfect! Why should he be an amazingly mature person? He's supposed to be playing a 16 year old. None of the characters are perfect or very mature, they all have their flaws. When I was in high school, I was EXACTLY like him. I had a raging crush on a straight boy who wanted nothing to do with me, I tried to point out everyone who was gay, I did most of the things Kurt does... It's realistic. I believe Kurt comes partially from the director's own experiences.
In all honesty, the Glee character is really offensive. Might as well make the kid a pedophile and sexual deviant as well. I mean, a lot of people think that about LGBTQ+, so why not add that? That's what his character is based off of, right? Stereotypes?

And if we look at the other characters, they ALL represent that particular type of person, i.e. Mercedes.
Now you really make me want to do that video I suggested to you. I hate that you're not interested in co-starring. )=

I LOVE that green!
Great video, sweets

@ew1127 Don't worry he is exactly the kind of person I am talking about in this video. I deleted the comment and blocked him.

LOL

@elohelreh I agree! Close minded people think Gay men are on a mission to turn straight men gay and that is just not the case with most gays.
