The difference between Rock n Roll as done by Jerry Lee Lewis & Pop-Rock performed by Neil Sedaka can be explained by this simple example: 'Great Balls of Fire' is about SEX, While 'I Go Ape' is about HOLDING HANDS.
Rock Rolls over ALL barriers, and like Warren Smith's 'Ubangi Stomp' Killa Lee Lewis woulda bin proud to cut this Big Apeshit hit, with Neil's live-in-'65 hot take bringin true Chuck 'Crazylegs' Berry's propehcy "..now they tell me Stan Getz is cuttin 'Maybelline' - well Chuck baby Bossa Nova man Stan is Goin Ape here !
@InSenseAround "I Go Ape" was written and performed by Neil Sedaka. Jerry Lee Lewis never recorded "I Go Ape". This is Neil's original work and never intended to "rip" anyone off...His talent exceed such a thought.
@mrob75 It's a rip off. Gimme a break..... He's even doing the trademark piano wipes like Jerry Lee. It's like a bad impression. It was very much intended. If there was no Jerry Lee, this song would not exist. In reality he had 8 "hits", and they were not rock n roll.
@InSenseAround Neil's arpeggios are uniquely his and his alone as he was originally trained at New York's Juliard...Hence the classical quality to his music. Neil Sedaka was and is 100% Rock and Roll, no one can dispute that! His Billboard Top 40 hits here in the states exceed more than 20...13 Top 10 and 3 #1s! Around the world his records sold more!
@mrob75 It's a ripoff pal, get real. Juliard schmooleyard, who cares? There is no classical quality, and there is no rock and roll quality either. The word quality is not synonymous with Neil Sedaka. It's disposable pop drivel. There are only 8 well known song of his. He didn't even write the words. The Immigrant has nothing to do with John Lennon. Give it up already. Not rock n roll.
@InSenseAround Joining Howard Greenfield and later Phil Cody, Neil Sedaka wrote a string of hits not only for himself but other acts as well including Connie Francis Gene Pitney 5th DimensionTom Jones It's good to hear that at least 8 of Neil's numerous hits are amongst your favorites John Lennon was so honored when Neil paid tribute to his immigration plight via the song "The Immigrant" John and the other Beatles were all fans of Neil Sedaka and other early American 60s acts.
@mrob75 Sedaka bad mouths The Beatles to this day, and blames them for his demise. (see wiki) Truth be told, he was already washed up for a few years before Beatlemania. (see wiki discography) Lennon "loved" it so much that he wouldn't take the phone call. Do some research Bozo, he was trying to glom and failed. (see wiki) I don't like any of this old payola crap. Where the boys are, indeed. The word "Ape" is also synonymous with copying, you knave. This just sucks.
@InSenseAround I think that I Go Ape was a great answer song to Lewis' Great Balls of Fire He preformed it live on Dick Clarks Saturday Beachnut Show after playing Chopin Neil successfully propelled himself out of the early 60s sound into a rock & roll renaissance of the 1970s And most recently his signature sound has gained new audiences with the release of three very successful CDs His legacy to the world of rock and roll will continue to resonate in ears of generations to come
With all due respect to Neil(Always Liked Him) & the song,'I Go ape'(Always Liked It), It wasn't Rock N Roll but a take-off on it. He.along with,Frankie Avalon,Bobby Rydell,Fabian etc,etc were talented singers but they in no way represented Rock n Roll in the Raw (or Real) sense. They were a Glossed over ,Homogenized version of it.
This is definitely not 1959. The end credits show that Freddie and Dreamers were on this show as was the Supremes. They werent around until the early 60's, probably 1964 or maybe later.
"I Go Ape" was a (surprisingly) minor Neil Sedaka hit in 1959 (it peaked at #42). However, as "Shindig" only aired from 1964-6, this performance was clearly from then -- not 1959. Nonetheless, it is spectacular fun and a real thrill that it even exists -- as few perfomers with big hits will showcase one of their relative flops on TV half a decade later. Neil sure could rock, eh? His classic "I Go Ape" was pretty much Neil's answer to the "Great Balls of Fire" style of Jerry Lee Lewis.
You are so right with your info on this song! Remember that Neil debuted this song on the Dick Clark Saturday Night Beechnut Show...He opened with a Chopin excerpt and then broke into "I Go Ape"...The kids were so shocked to hear it in comparison to Chopin! Ha! By the Shindig years, I Go Ape was somewhat a little "sqaure"...Take Care :-)
It was 1965. At the end of the credits it appears in roman numerals (copyright). Not only that but if you'll notice, Marianne Faithfull was on the show...who would have been all of like 11 or 12 in 1959. What I find interesting is that this was since Rock & Roll was only about a decade old at this point, but changing dramatically, this song and Neil Sedaka were already considered "oldie goldies" by then.
Wow...my old English teachers would be disappointed to see my last sentence there. Let me try that again: What I find interesting is that since Rock & Roll was only about a decade old and by this point changing dramatically, Neil Sedaka and these hits from the '50's were already considered "oldie goldies".
I love Neil Sedaka. One of the most outstanding talents on the pop scene...ever. But this number, good as it was, was a very rare venture into the rock'n'roll genre. To put him in the Hall of Fame when really his strengths lie elsewhere? On the other hand, there's a heap of people in there with less reason than Neil. Madonna? Rock'n'roll? You what??
Neil Sedaka should be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. This man is a GIANT in the industry and this is long overdue. His songs are timeless classics that he has written and sang himself and they have also been performed by some of the greatest artists of our time!!! Neil Sedaka is without a doubt one of the pioneers of Rock & Roll!!
Jann Wenner can only be embarrassed that NEIL SEDAKA and most of the Brill Building participants are not in the Hall of Fame while Madonna and Leonard Cohen already have been inducted... Of course, no one knows where Rolling Stone is, its address or if its building has any history. But Sedaka and co always have 1619 Broadway, sitting there in all its splendor between 49th and 50th Streets, a living landmark. It will be there long after the whole debacle of the Hall of Fame is a distant memory.
It's really great to hear and see this classic song performed so well live, and to be reminded what a great rock'n'roll TV producer Jack Good was.
In fact, I still remember him writing excitedly in his Record Mirror about how wonderful this record was. I think he was instrumental in cementing Neil's enduring UK popularity.
This semi-obscure song sort of "got lost" between "The Diary" (Sedaka's first chart hit) and "Oh Carol" and "Stairway To Heaven," which both subsequently hit the Top 10 nationally.

This is exactly why he should NOT be in the rock and roll hall of fame. This is the worst cheesy rip off of Jerry Lee Lewis. Horrible.
