Most all manufacturing will probably be in China shortly. Like it or not, the US can't compete w/ the labor costs. China still has to build to our quality, material and process specs and our quality people still have to buy it off. That said, the only difference is cost of labor. Have it built here exactly to specs or have it built there exactly to specs at a fraction of the cost. I don't like it but that's the way it is.
It's aaa..... Great plane and aaa... And it's air coled and aaa..... and aaa... It's like 35lbs heavier and aaaa... I really like it and aaa.... I really recommend it and aaa....
And I will never buy aaa.. Plane from you aaa..... Somebody aaaa... So in cohesive aaa.....
And aaaa Cessna needs aaaa... new sales man aaa...
Cessna decided to maximize there profits. So what did they do? What does every company do to maximize profits? CHINA!!!! Built by the country that is not trusted to produce anything with more than two moving parts. I wonder if they will be selling portable parachutes just in case of the need to bail out. Produced for $30,000 and sold for $120,000. Why didn't they pass this 75% cost savings on to the consumer? Greed!!!!!
No yokes, ugly cowl styling, built in China, crazy price tag for a nothing plane and 2 out of 2 have crashed so far. If this plane attracts a crowd, it'll be those with a morbid curiosity rather than buyers.
Sorry Cessna, after producing quality aircraft for this long, a dud was bound to come up and I believe this is the one. :(
@airste172...its been a year since your comment so lets clear some things up. 1)production 162s look very little like the one in this video. different wing, cowling, rudder, etc. 2)have you ever heard of another manufacter's light sport crashing during developement? i didnt think so. the general public can rest assured that the Cessna 162 has been fully flight tested, by experimental test pilots; the crashes are proof of that, and have nothing to do with "producing quality aircraft."
3)the production 162 has VERY comparible performance numbers of a 172 all while saving some money. cessna is passing the savings on to the customer with a low price, only possible by producing them in China. american aviation workers aren't cheap. so, :( yourself...
490lb useful load? 890 fpm climb? $111,500.00? Why not just go buy a used Cub or Champ, learn to use the rudder pedals?
And built in China? Get real Cessna. What a let down. I guess I'll stop wasting time here and surf on over to look at used Luscombes, Cubs, Champs, Cheifs, and all kinds of other LSA eligible planes with almost the same specs for about half the price. Or, I could look at building a kit myself with better performance and specs all the way around for half the price.
Flying Magazine posted a press release that stated Cessna would be building the skycatcher in China. They stated that the market really needs this airplane. Sure it does. All the other LSA builders do not use slave labor and that is why they all sell for around 100,000. Cessna plans on saving 75% by building in China. Are they going to pass that savings on to the customer? I don't think so!!! I challenged Flying Magazine to call Bullshit on Cessna. Thus far no balls. Cessna owns Flying Mag.
Who designed the 162 a snake charmer? Curves everywhere? 110K for this plane, way too much! Just mass produce the 152
and tell Continental they need to drop their price on the O200 50%, or go have the Germans build a new one with modern technology and superior engineering. Surely one of your manufacturing engineers can figure out how to use a robot to rivet the wing together in no time! Henry Ford did it, can't you guys?
Ugly duckling, form fitting cowling looks like it might cause overheating of the engine. Why not continue making the 152, much, much better looking aircraft! The 152 has clean lines with a dignified look with beautiful tail feathers, truly a beautiful aircraft.
There's a reason CHINA doesn't sell cars in the U.S. It has nothing to do with cost and everything to do with safety. If they can't build a safe car what makes you think they can build a safe plane. Not gonna buy, not gonna fly, lost all interest.
krellLab r u crazy??!! the only difference is that china is cheaper to build it!!!!!! thats why it costs 110k if they were gonna make it in the us it would cost over 180k. do some research after u say something!
Isbrandho, since you live in China may think this is a good idea. I hate to tell you the cost of the airpalne is est. to be over $100,000 us dollars. If that what you call keeping down the cost we don't see eye to eye. If the plane was made in Europe that be a different matter. We had so many goods this past year enter the USA with lead paint,et. We had dog food that killed our dogs, tooth paste tthat was bad. Yes, we even have human rights here, strange thing isn't.
The $100+ price tag is mostly due to the liability insurance bills which Cessna has to foot in order to protect the company. Remember the Hudson River and Three Mile Island? Yes, countries will make mistakes (and inevitably affecting people's lifes). Give China a chance to fix what Mao and has messed up the last 40 odd years.
Let me get this straight... They're going to overcome problems with product liability by sourcing from the country with the worst track record for producing dangerous and failure-prone products?
Is it just me, or does this sound like it was dreamed up by a severely retarded manager who traded his last shred of common sense for an MBA?
Textron is doing what all other corporations are doing to Americans. Screwing us. Whoopie, Pay the china man 20 cents an hour and save those corporate profits. I hope the lead painted pos crashes.
Most of the comments are either inaccurate or biased. SAC and, to that effect, XAC manufacture quality parts for Boeing and Airbus. 100% of the tail rudders for 737's, for example, are manufactured at XAC. It's excellent that Cessna's Aniello decided to contract SAC so that this LSA can remain affordable. So, rather than throw eggs at Aniello, you should thank him for keeping LSAs low cost for folks like yourself.
Its a damn shame Cessna feels they need to build this P.O.S. in China, I hope they don't sell worth s damn. More and more of Cessna's jobs are heading to Mexico. Its just a shame that they are ruining a great American products built by proud Americas.
LSA for $100K ? More toys for fewer boys. I hope they factored in the extra weight of that lead-based paint. Oh, my bad.
Seriously though. Will the aluminum alloy be China sourced? If it is, it going to be contaminated with ferrous metals and rust. Yup sure as rain in Seattle. Lets see how soon the parts start to break from material failures.
There are other choices. If you want quality, get German or Japanese metals.
If Clyde Cessna seen how his kids decided to make the 162 in China, he would roll over in his grave. When a company as American as Cessna goes to China to save a few bucks, it time for the aviation world to stand up and tell Cessna they are wrong.
Cessna decided to make this aircraft in China! It's a sad day in aviation, All pilots need to stand up and boycott Cessna. They decided it was more important to save money with cheap labor, look at all the problems this past year with goods make in China, toys with lead paint, dog food that killed dogs, the list goes on. At the next Sun and Fun - Oshkosh Air Adventure Boycott them. Or drop off a bag of Rice!
Damit whats wrong with Cessna it so Americana and now their gunna make them in China that peice of shit isnt even gunna get airborne...they better not keep the stick on it
Made in China! What a piece of crap this airplane will be. Love the guy talking about how expensive air travel has become. Indexed for inflation, comercial air travel is cheaper than it ever was.
Continental O-200. (Which is like a pig evaluating an Arabian Stallion.) T.B.O. is a prime issue that the experienced buyer pays a lot of attention to (or should anyway.) "Track record baby"
Ugly, really. If you take a look at european LSA, you can see what DESIGN is. I think it has no appeal, no look. It seems designed by a kid, as Cessna NGP of course. Take a look at Tecnam P2004 Bravo, or Flyitalia MD3 Rider (sorry I'm Italian). Hope Cessna continues making only metal AG aircraft... CIAO!
Clyde Cessna would be so pissed at this dumb ass talk about "next generation" economical aircraft. The Continental 0-200 was on the Stiff spring steel J and K series Cessnas which was a P.O.S and had a low TBO and if you were very lucky you might squeeze 1400 hrs out of it. I am dissapointed in this fool try and talk like he "knows" Cessnas.
I hope that someone comes out with a reasonably affordable airplane. Even the "cheap" ones cost as much as a house! Considering how completely insane commercial air travel has become, the market is ripe for someone to manufacture a simple, affordable, reliable, and relatively safe GA aircraft.
This is the ugliest Cessna i have ever seen!! Sorry, forgive my honestity! I expected more from Cessna! Give us an experimental based on the Cessna 170A design and then i buy one from ya! :-)
When will Cessna ever learn that their trademark of having and aircraft painted mostly white with just a splash of colour as if it belonged to an airline make their aircraft look so boring. Their sales would increase if only they showed imagination when it comes to making an aircraft look appealing to the eye in much the same way car manufacturers have learnt by this decades ago. Cessna sorry but your aircraft look BORING.
Sometimes you have to let aesthetics trump air tunnel design parameters. This new Light Sport Aircraft LOOKS like a KIT PLANE; it lacks the venerable styling cues that we have come to expect from Cessna.

Why use this old junk engine technology and why use a damn stick between the legs that hinders getting in and out, a yoke would be better!
Use a light Gemini 100 Diesel with a turbo!
This think has failure written all over it!
I do like the metal, 2 door, 2 seat, high wing design, but the old stick and the old engine design give it the thumbs down, sorry.
