There is no real safe way to self-pierce, you cannot have clean equipment. I'm glad you started by saying not to, but giving tips is still a bad idea, people will rather look up youtube tutorials than look up how dangerous it is. Are any of yours self done?

There are ways and means to have clean equipment and the best way is to get them sterilised (there are places available to do it)

People will do it regardless, so I feel I'm doing some good teaching how to be somewhat hygeinic!

I agree with you about all this. I've pierced myself around 30 times. I'm only been infected 3 times, and those are from the times i pierced my hand. I pierced my tongue, had to take it out (i was arrested and it closed while i was in detention) and i repierced it 2 weeks later. :P

I don't pierce so much anymore. And sometimes i pierce my friends, but i'm always hesitant because i care about them, and anything could happen.

my piercer didn't use clamps on my tragus or belly button. could that be why they were the ones that got infected quickly?

@Irish77Dancer No, clamps are used to hold the skin still so the piercing is straight. Some piercers do freehand piercings but cleanliness is what will affect whether or not you get an infection

Question, I got my septum pierced back in last april. And ever since i have had many issues none stop of my nose being stuffy ever since i got it pierced. And i had a major nose bleed 3 weeks after it being pierced. it was done at a shop. it dosent hurt nore bother me. i just wonder if the non stuffy nose issue could be from the septum piercing?! Or be a issue when it was pierced?!

@bell9096 When you say infected, what is it doing? Is it red, hot to the touch and leaking greeny pus/foul smelling liquid?

If its just a bit red and sore then thats natural healing process. To help rid infection

1. clean your piercing with sea salt soaks at least twice a day making sure to rinse afterwards

2. don't pick or fiddle with your piercing, let it chill out ^0^

3. after a week, if it gets worse or doesnt clear up, go see your doctor for some antibiotics!

Thanx so much for the tips. i have been doing sea salt soaks twice a day since i got it pierced but i wasn't told to rinse it off afterwards so i will start doing that. I am going to get my septum done in a few days and i will ask them to check to make sure my tragus was pierced with titanium jewelery because i just assume it is but i am not 100% sure. @dragon77girl Sounds like hypotrophic scarring. Make sure your bar in your tragus is long enough and is titanium, do a sea salt soak twice a day and make sure to rinse afterwards! Try not to touch it and make sure when you wash your hair that you rinse any shampoo etc off your ears as well as that can cause irritation :)

It should start clearing up within a few days!

@RedEmeraldMoon Safety pins are just bad full stop. They're made from cheap metal which will flake off microscopically into the hole you just made, they cause bad scarring as its a blunt object (it makes a hole rather than a slit that a piercing needle does) and totally the wrong size. Not to mention that safety pins are meant to be used for holding clothing and material together, not to be put through your body -__-

umm..I see you have stretched ears..maybe you can help me out a bit (:

i was going from 6mm to 8mm using tapers..i didnt have plugs so i just left the tapers in..i got plugs the next day and when i took out the tapers one of the ears was bleeding (the other one was perfect)

any advice on what i should do to get it to heal quicker & better?

@punkrocker577 Sounds like you might of ripped it accidentally (Its very common when you sleep!)

Change to a plug (wood is best!) and sea salt soak it twice a day until your ear heals. Don't start stretching again for at least 2/4 weeks as your ear needs time to heal and stretching with a rip will cause infection and possible future blowouts which need surgery to fully heal.

its looking good now :) and the little rip healed already. it looked way worse with the blood. getting some bio oil tomorrow to treat em a little bit.

but I will wait the 2/4 weeks..blow out and a surgery is the last thing I want

I think this idea is brilliant and I don't know if anyone has started hating on you yet but really I don't see why anyone should. By just looking at the suggestions to the right you can see how many people self pierce and it is a pretty common occurance. Whether or not you'd have made this video I'm sure people still would have done it if they wanted to. They're done with a dermal punch thats a few .mm smaller than the jewellery being inserted. The dermal punch takes a bit of skin out, and the skindiver is inserted :)

You can also get tubs to dispose of needles and clinic gives them away free...I used to use a expresso machine to sterilise, as its superheated steam... few cycles through that worked quite well... Candular medical needle is a standard piercing needle ( what gauge do you recommend?)

I still stand by can't beat an autoclave just because! I've heard of many different self sterilisation techniques, but none of them clean 100%, steriliser is the safest and best bet.

I couldn't think of the name last night for the needles xD It only came to me afterwards!

Gauge, 1.2 or 1.6mm. For surface piercings then 1.6 deffo, Ears 1.2 etc

Great Video Paige! There is also a book called 'The Piercing Bible' by Elayne Angel which covers piercing in a lot of detail and is really helpful. Most people who share my profession would frown upon people piercing themselves but a lot of people do anyway for various reasons. So well done you for giving great advice!
