  • definitely one of federer's most hard fought win between 2004 to 2008 in the US open

right up there with Agassi in 2004 and Djokovic in 2007

  • one of fed's most beautiful matches/tournaments

  • Back then tennis was Federers yard, I just wish he finds a way to get back to his best.

  • @WindsweptHQ He is past his prime I am afraid, oh well on to new people. Maybe someone with more personality.

  • @kelman221 yeah of course...*note sarcasm* he nearly beat the best player this season at the US, he beat him at the french.

  • @WindsweptHQ He is still past his prime either way, please tell me you aren' the generic fanboy that thinks Federer is always perfect no matter what :). I can't wait to see the next generation of players.

  • @kelman221 I think the real prime of Federer ended at the end of 2007 when he swept through the Shanghai Masters Cup. After that, and with the mono, he lost a step and his confidence. Obviously some players caught up, but he still was making it deep in slams (still is). 7 straight slam finals from Wimbledon 2008 to Australian 2010 (won 4 of them). Not too shabby for a guy past his prime, eh? New players are always welcome, especially now that Djokovic is winning. Ugh!!

  • @davd1986 Haha I couldn't agree more with you man.

  • @davd1986 fully agreed :-)

  • Man I miss how fearless Federer used to be. Looking at the scores of some of the points in this video, I noticed a lot of the points he plays cautiously or passively on today, would be the same type of points he'd just be all over back in the day.

    I miss this Federer.

  • federer was SO fast back then. he was all over every single ball. i hope he gets that form back for one more major.

  • roger had that deceptive speed, nobody thought he was as quick as he was

  • Hewitt was a good player back in the day, never great though, although he had no major weaknesses in his game, he just didn't have enough weapons to completly dominate. He filled in the void between the sampras and federer era's

  • 3:05 the hardest backhand ever hit

  • 2.08 2-0 Federer = The set is over

  • Hewitt choked, no belief

  • This is my fav tournament of roger's ever. Power of a million men

  • The hewitt here is at his prime, better than djokovic and murray.

  • Comment removed

  • federer at his peak here.... nadal n djokovic wouldnt be able to beat him here

  • Federer is starting to get back into form by being more aggressve now. Look how he has played since Wimbledon.

  • amazing match, this is just top notch tennis..

  • watching federer here, from this year, should remind us all why hes considered the greatest ever and it should also convince us he is the greatest ever. he is completely without weakness and without fault in anyway. the federer we see today, isnt what we have witnessed throughout his reign as the #1 and through the majority of his slams.

  • @radioxxflyer Again, why has he won as much in the last year and a half as he did then? Notice no one took advantage of his backhand back then, which has vastly improved since. The backhands he pulled against Murray at AU this year he would've never pulled back then, despite his fantastic passing ability off either wing. I do agree his forehand was fucking phenom this particular year of '05 though. Just disgustingly devastating. There wasn't the same competish back then however

  • @DanimalLawlz obviously its your view about he competition. But if your telling me that djokovic=more competition with the tennis he's been playing this year, and half way through last year, it was quite shocking. Murray yet to beat fed in a slam. And you talk about backhands, the best its ever been was shanghi 06, better than the murray match. Look at past masters series winners Ivan Lubicic (cant spell :)) he made masters finals in 06 and let a 2 set to love lead slip aginst rafa in 05....

  • @DanimalLawlz ....people like hewitt made semis or better from 04-06, and the main guy stopping him was federer. People think that davydenko has just popped up out of nowhere, but he was losing to federer in slam quaters and semi's in 06 and 07. Federers main priorities since 06 has been the slams, so rubbish master series performances dont really cont as more competition when people like Canas beat im in IW and miam, it is still the main people challenging in the slams, and but that, i mean...

  • @DanimalLawlz ...nadal. You cant expect him to win every slam, and when he loses there is more competition. That said, Im not saying that when fed loses a slam match, its because he doesnt play well or that the other guy didnt deserve it. But the end 03- beginning 07 level was just the most rediculous level anyone could have played tennis at, and people like murray, djoko and delpo would struggle to keep up with in a major, let alone beat. But again saying that, the AO10 final was the best ive..

  • @DanimalLawlz ..seen fed play since........probably...... the masters cup 07? maybe even the AO 07. the difference now, is that those performances are spaced out much more he produced a number before that, but its only 2 or 3 %, but it makes a massive difference at the top of the game.

Obviously its your opinion aboutthe competition, but they rose up during the later half of his career, so its difficult to say how they would fair against federer at his absolute best

  • @Jamus182 Yeah Nadal would always fair fairly well against Federer because his game is so perfectly suited against a righty single handed backhand, but obv no one could beat Roger on hard court at this level. Dude doesn't even need to come to the net here, just blasts that enormous forehand anywhere he wants. He doesn't have that same power in his forehand anymore, but that's to be expected as one nears 30 in tennis.

  • @DanimalLawlz it's the surface, it's even making federer's backhands look like lasers. theyve slowed all the courts considerably since. if you see cincy where the courts still very fast federer dominates there very easily, wiping the floor with djokovic/murray for the last couple of years. he may have lost a small percentage of power but for me the slower surfaces/harder hitters are more noticeable.

And Nadal has only made 2 hardcourt slam finals, his game is not (as) suited to fast surfaces

  • @demondayzzz Hmm...I think US Open is still the same surface now as it is here...obv they've switched surfaces as AUS and in the tour finals but I don't think they've changed anything but the colour in the last decade

  • @DanimalLawlz i'm talking about comparing his pace of shot at the US to a vid of him in the AUS or something and thinking he's lost power, which many people do. theyve kept the US more or less the same speed that's true

  • As I said he was only starting his comeback, Lleyton hewitt just beat Roger Federer in Queens,

  • @huangyishi Nice call, haha. It was in Halle, by the way.

  • @kdbq126

Haha yeah, that was my mistake :) All I knew was it was Wimbledon warm up tournament, sorry about that.

  • if only hewitt had the firepower, that some other player´s have..

  • This match clearly demonstrated how aweful Federer's one-handed backhand can be. It's serviceable at best, and when it gives you less unforced errors to stack on top of outright winners. Thank God coaches are forcing us to use to two handed to get rid of such primitive technique

  • @smithcm14 Oh my goodness, I am going to take personal offense to that comment. 'Primative', some of the most beautiful shots in tennis history are one-handers, lets not forget Justiene Hennins backhand, that is one of the most asthetically pleasing motions ever, not to mention one of the most effective. Coaches at a younger level, are promoting the two hander because it is more difficult for a four year old to hit a one hander. There is so much skill required in the timing of a OH.....

  • @smithcm14 ...Pete sampras said himself he didnt think he would have won as many majors, particularly wimbledon, if he had not had the OHer, its a more naturally agressive shot that required great timing. Im not saying the 2Her isn't nice, look at safin or nalbandian. Undisputably,Federer, Sampras, Borg, and Laver, are the four greatest tennis players ever, 3/4, have one handers......

  • @smithcm14 ...... its a shame so little people use the OH becasue people like Gasquet and Wawrinka can rip the ball on that side with less effort than it would take nadal to rip one, 'Primative'. And I refer you to Blake Federer Shanghi 06, berfore you call federers backhand 'servicable at best'

  • @Jamus182 Sorry you didn't catch the sarcasm, I have a one-handed backhand myself, and it's great. This match highlights some of the best one-handed backhands federer has ever hit.

  • @smithcm14 lol, sorry about that, I probably took it a bit too seriously any way, its was just I love watching the OHander. My bad for going off on one :) I was gonna say I thought feds backhand was pretty good in this match. Anyway, sorry about the rant :)

  • Wow, Hewitt played incredibly well. With such performance Federer, not many guys could take a set, Hewitt was one of the rare

  • i wish there were a HiQ vid for 3:06... it's just...i mean--!!! *lost for words* :)

  • Is it just me or were the courts faster back then?

  • @KoreanMilkman2007

the Grand slams are definitely getting slower. its definitely more noticable at the AO and Wimbledon, which at this point plays like the clay at RG, which has been sped up. The US Open courts I don't believe have been slowed down. There's a reason why Fed still won it in his 08 slump.

  • Court surfaces are the same, balls probably different, slightly thicker? or fuzzier who knows. The speed has been about the same for the past 5 years at the US Open I think, whenever they introduced the surface.

  • @IricForset court surfaces aren´t the same, the grass at wimbledon is thicker, puffier, therefore slower, indian wells and miami are gritty-sandy ,slow playing hard courts, australian open is a medium-fast acrilic hard court and some of the indoor courts are a bit slower, like the paris-indoor, apparently tennis balls are a bit heavier these day´s.

  • @reefric Stop going around and misinterpreting what I said. Do you really think I would be silly enough to think that all surfaces are the same? I see you post about a hundred comments on every damn Fed vid, just stop.

  • @IricForset why are you asking me, I don´t even know you,( don´t want to either) I can´t answer that for you, why do you even bother asking me a question, you probably already know the answer to...pffff, you wan´t me to stop posting comment´s on you tube? hahahaha!!! not sorry to dissapoint you, but the answer is a big fat NO, why´s that bad ass, you going to doing something about it , if I don´t stop posting comments..be my guest!

  • @reefric Are you on drugs or just not with it today. The guy asked whether the courts were slowed down at the US. In the past 4-5 years they have been the same speed, the balls might be fuzzier is all I am saying. I was getting annoyed because I am tired of people who go around making hundreds of comments on every possible video and misinterpreting what others say. Clearly from your response you're a bit of a lunatic as well.

  • @IricForset me a lunatic? ha, that´s fresh, consdering you´re the one patronizing me, talking to me, as if though im your son, maybe you ought to choose your words carefully next time in your comment´s, so other´s won´t misundertsand you..have a nice day..

  • @reefric Piss off you freak. I've seen you arguing with other people too. You got nothing better to do than go around harassing others?

  • @IricForset not really, you see, it´s my life´s purpose to go around youtube picking on people...my destiny is to make your life as miserable as possible...I can´t help it...it´s bad karma..

  • @reefric I said fuck off. Leave me alone thanks. Have a nice day :)

  • @IricForset I love you too..

  • Great match, a classic

  • 3:06 ...

  • Jesus, i almost forgot how Federer was back in those days.

  • @hubertus35

If one looks carefully, Federer spells "Jesus," which explains all the magic.

  • 2:56...federers so jacked lol

  • I think Hewitt is under-rated. He is much better then people think. He has just had some injuries lately. He got in the quarters and lost to Roddick in 5 sets, and his only STARTING his comeback.

  • he is underrated but we wont win any more slams or a masters series

  • @huangyishi hewitt is definitely one of the most confident player´s on the grass, he enjoy´s playing on the green and feel´s good on it, which help´s him a lot at queens and wimbledon.

  • @huangyishi lleyton is a great competitor, he´s a dark horse at grand slam´s, especially if he´s playing well..he can make it to the last round´s, if his game is clicking..

  • @extradutyfelt1 i agree lleyton can make a good run if hes healthy and prepared

  • @thespyrogyro at wimbledon especially, lleyton is one of the better grass court player´s, which he himself, say´s is his favorite surface..

  • @extradutyfelt1 yes very true hopefully he will make a run there

  • @thespyrogyro lleyton is a great competitor and for that he deserves respect..

  • @extradutyfelt1 yes that is very true

  • I love this camera angle.

  • Great series of highlights. I love how you included the replays. It makes it that much better as a learning tool for any serious tennis player.

  • i love hewitt's tenacity and grit.

hewitt played his best in the second and third set.

federer was just on that day and hewitt only got one set out of it.

if only roger was playing a little off like 80 to 90 percent maybe hewitt couldve pulled out a win but there was no one on earth that couldve beat roger that day...even now.

  • except safin....2005 australian open.

  • Hewitts a gun

  • Look at the guys hands on the bottom as Federer hits that sick midcourt swinging volley crosscourt at 9:14

  • One of the best sets I ever saw Hewitt play (3rd). Especially after blowing all those set points in the 2nd. After this match Hewitt turned terrible.

  • He played pretty good against Federer in Cincinatti 07 (even tho Federer won). But it was a close match that could have gone either way. Also check out his match against Roddick in Memphis last week.

  • Yeah, that match Roger had against Lleyton in Cincinatti was a great match. But lately, Hewitt has been slowly getting back into his groove. He reached his first final in 2 years, we'll see whether or not he'll win it though, however things look good as hes facing an unknown American player.

  • Both Hewitt and Agassi (two hall of famers very comfortable on the hard courts) played outstanding tennis at the open in 05, yet Federer beat them both in 4 sets. I think those two matches were the apex of Federer's game/career. He was simply amazing. My how things have changed. His movement isn't as fluid anymore. His backhand is unstable again. But, gosh, back in the summer of 05, he was the best that's ever been. No doubt about it. Beautiful to watch.

  • agassi might have played well but he was 35 yrs old, the best agassi ever to play at the us open was in 95, unfortunately he played so many hardcourt games prior to the open that he ran out of gas against sampras n lost.

  • I think Federer is simply amazing.

  • 9:12 was amazing....

  • 3:08- far i want to hit a backhand like that, such a beast shot!!!

  • this is about as in-form i've seen federer, with the forehands, half-volleys, volleys, backhands especially very devastating. you can hear and see the snap each of his shots make, and his backhand in this match is definitely better than hewitt's, who was supposed to have one of the best (if not the best) backhands at the time. the santoro match of this same tournament also had an on-fire federer. fast hardcourt has got to be fed's best surface.

  • Hewitt has NEVER had nearly the best backhand in the game! In fact, it's probably one of the weakest backhands when he was in the top ten (next to Roddick). He has a SOLID backhand but his forehand is actually stronger than his backhand. But this video is slighty biased because it doesn't show most of Hewitt's winners. This was actually a much more competitive match than this video demonstrates. Plus, these announcers are annoying as fuck! Why can't they just shut the fuck up sometimes?

  • I think his backhand was among the best, w/ passing shots, lobs, pace etc., but i can see that this isn't a very popular view...i don't know whether the commentators are trying to get new fans for the sport or cater to old ones. I like johnny mac though, as well as jimmy arias. as for Hewitt's winners, his best set was the second and i think they showed a good deal of them, but federer hit like 30 more or something but i can't find the stats. and they were a lot better looking! so ha!

  • i'm sorry i messed up on that one, hewitt won a set, i got confused with teh 2004 final.

  • The 2004 final Federer DOMINATED. But this one he didn't. Hewitt had set points in the second set and won the third set, but you don't really get that sense from watching this clip. I have this match on tape and Hewitt had some spectacular plays in the 3rd set but we don't get to see any of them here. I agree that Hewitt has the best lobs and some of the best passing shots around, but as far as backhand groundies go, I can think of dozens of current players who are better (including Federer).

  • Hewitt was among the best at returns, passing shots and lobs, but when it comes to depth, pace, angles and spins in the middle of a rally: Gasquet Haas Robredo Federer Blake Safin Murray Djokovic Nalbandian Nadal and of course Agassi ALL had a better backhand than Hewitt in my opinion.
  • totally agree, but that's more or less compared with hewitt of today. looking at old videos, esp v federer in 2004 Masters Cup, or that 5 setter in the davis cup, or vs kuerten, his backhand i agree doesn't look like the best in the world, but it looked up there. his speed and tenacity were what got him all that success though, you don't need the most powerful strokes if you have his counterpunch style (murray(sort of)for example. it helps w/ nadal though. and you have to be crazy fit.

  • Beautiful!
