I love writing. Stories, essays, blogs. Always hated poetry. Hated that it wasn't spelled-out. Hated that it lacked definition or rules. How will anyone understand what is not defined? How will I know they're understanding me if I don't explain it in plain prose? I wrestled with this for a decade. Maybe I wasn't meant for romantic poetry, but the first time I heard -this- poetry, I felt it. His words could paint my sordid past. Miguel Pinero's writing taught me to love poetry. He spoke for me.
this is for is baby and the gang that couln't shoot strait.maybe you did drugs with him or maybe he did somethingto you we don't know or maybe you envie his talent.becouse apperently you have none by the way you express youreself. its easy to point somebodys elses fault exept youre owns.everybody knows that he wasen't a saint t was the the work that inspired other like me to write what have you done?
this is for ashtray, people like you should not be talking about miguel since you donot have a brain, what have you ver done?everybody has somethings in their closets i mean who the hell and what rat hole did you come from?i don't think that you are intelligent enough to even conprehend the importance of what this grt poet did for la raza.i don't think that you realize of what miguel was taling about.
iam very proud to be a latino and what miguel pinero was expressing thru his poems is what were the latinos were going thru in those times i was born in new york and i hang out in the lower eastside in the 60s and the70sand love being there when i herd of pineros acomplisments as poet i felt grat pride that a puertorican won the obs for the firt time we had world recognition,i as a newyorican feel proud of him.
miguel pinero remenber this name and tell youre kids who he really was a poet .writter,playwrite,ect.the first puertoriqueno to be nominated and won them also, yes he had his demons but it was what it was and it is what it is and who ever has the first rock to throw who has no sin then throw it.i wish a could have more space to writte about him the poem the"cause"says what was going then and what going on now.
let him rest in peace, and like the first comment said, maybe not today,....but one day he will recognized;....not as a hero {far from it}.................but as the genius he was.
I so sick and tired of people idolizing mikey..I knew mikey and Tito, and I was a long standing member of The Family rep.
Mikey hung out with me, my brother Justice, Tito, Mafia, and lucky on 11 street avenue B the shooting Gallery..Mikey stole Short Eyes, took it to Algarin, he took it to Joe Papp. That's the true story..Sad that they have Boricuas think that mikey and Algarine ar5e heros...They infected so many young boys, and many died..and you aHoles look up to garbage like that..
I'm sure that he may have been garbage to you. I'm sure el cabron estava jodiendo por ahi, but the man was a poet. A poet in PUERTO RICAN history. Many back in the day would say that Edgar Allen Poe was nothing more then a drunk, but he's regarded in high standards in the history of poetry. Miguel hasn't even gained recognition on a larger scale. Us Puerto ricans need to stop hating on each other and bring our raza up. That's why we as a whole group don't get anywhere, because all we do is hate
My last comment was meant as a reply to ashylarry. I've looked up Marvin Camillo, his obit in the NYT. He died January 08, sounds like someone with drive and vision. Sure he was the person who got the prison play Short Eyes to develop, get done, happen, but Miguel was the diver who came up with the stuff.
margot980...it's so sad that you feel that way...what Pinhead did was rapped the family of it's words, fool, the words were from people who improved the play..mikey used people,to write for him,he knew nothing of structure...just poetry....Pancho and his kids should share in the estate of Short Eyes. Again...by the way Marvin didn't die as you read in a car rec...And Pinero, was beatin to death, for sodomizing a drug dealers kids..
It was truly a blessing when we went over Pinero's poems in lit class and this movie is so powerful and beautiful. If you guys ever get the chance watch it, it'll make you a changed person.

Try a brilliant wonderful lie. This movie pays no homeage to the man who put that junkie fuck ingrate on the center stage. Look up the name Marvin Camillo and see what you really learn.
I knew him personally & trust me, he was a thief. I am not frowning on his poetry skills, just on what he did to the man that actually wrote the play "Short Eyes." That man helped Miguel when he was locked up & guided him on a path filled with great opportunities. The proof is in the winner of the OB award. By the way, never give any junkies excuses for being the way they are. I can name a million other people that grew up like him & are living fine. I'm one of them.
Miguel wrote the poem "Short Eyes" which inspired the play that later became a movie in the 70's and the man that wrote & directed the play name was Marvin Camillo. He was my father, so despite what people say on this site, I do know what I'm saying. My father's mistake, like so many of us have done, was trust that a handshake was an honorable contract amongst "friendly coleagues." What is an OB? It is the equivelant to the TONY award & myfather won it for Short Eyes for best Play writer.
my pops was a heroin addict from the lower eastside so this hits home. I never evn met him...

Now watch Short Eyes, on the Ytube, 12 parts. It's hard. Glad I noted the funny and sweet to go back to after. It's hard.
Looked for it after seeing the movie on APTN last night.

Who was the man that actually wrote Short Eyes, who helped him? Details please. Short Eyes is amazing, right here on the tube.
What do you mean by the "winner of the OB award"?
