  • This is a coordination drill, designed to instill in students an understanding of the principle of using the attacking hand for defense (kobo-ichi). We all want realism in our training, but realistically very few arts train by having partners rip full power punches at each others heads at close range. Boxers and Thai fighters use pads, and when sparring they use gloves and headgear. Otherwise no one would live long enough to compete and armies would take the field with only half their men.

  • Ok , I understand you may be tired , But could be a little closer , so if not blocked the punch would connect?

  • Yes that is correct, it could have been a little closer. However this is just a demonstration clip... feel free to post a video response showing how it should be done properly!

  • Again, I saw your responses as a very defensive reaction for a genuine question.

    I won't bother next time.

  • I think I have an explanation: the fact that their movements are a little stiff and that the distance is big indicate that this particular drill is new for them. So it is only natural that their start practicing at that speed and at that distance. Of course, I think they should get better as time goes by.

  • this may seem like a stupid question, but why bother blocking at all when the punch is clearly going to miss by at least 2 to 3 inches? wouldn't it be better to at least make the punch slightly real?

no offense intended, this is a genuine question :)

  • Not all techniques need to be practiced against a full strength attack. This video merely demonstrates a technique; it's an exercise. In the video we are training together in the video to practice. It is not made clear but we had been training on this particular day for 5 hours prior to this short video being recorded, as such we were sweaty and tired.
