Watching this movie is like watching kung fu theatre. Which consists of bad acting, bad directing. I guess if you like that then it was a good movie two you I have higher standards.
This is one of those rare movies that got it right. So many revenge epics are produced and they're made horrible by stars with messiah complexes and directors with little regard for sincerity. Fantastic film. Spike Lee should realise the big mistake he's about to make, and if not, seemingly, Josh Brolin will have a lot to make up for when the remake comes out.
film looks really intriguing, but I wouldn't write off the "hollywood" version. Spike Lee and Josh Brolin have both been involved in great films and have a pretty select fan base, i'd say it stands a chance not being completely ruined. If someone like michael bay, JJ abrams, or sam raimi got it I'd write it off
@GotYourWingsYet You're completely right with regards to Bay, Abrams & Raimi. I just believe something like Oldboy shouldn't be redone, recreated, remastered or whatever. It seems to me as a financial stunt to show how powerful and amazing the Oldboy story is. and to, in turn, release it to the masses so anyone can get it. I think the beauty of the original is the fact that it is Korean, Korean's make fantastic films through visuals, plot, characters, etc. We'll have to see what happens.
@JZgames I'm not going to. Don't give me that silly comment everyone gives to those who have negative attitudes towards videos. I love this film, it's just stupid that Spike Lee feels the need to Americanise it. I'm allowed an opinion mate.
Its a weird film. The only reason I decided to watch it this weekend was due to it's high rating on LoveFilm. Personally its not my cup of tea, however I must admit that i did keep watching it all throughout because its quite weird and just keeps you curious but I kind of regret I kept on watching it now. anyways for those of you who like weird films - watch this!
I like suspense part of this film. I hate the ending and I hate the SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT I hate this being just about incest, duh! Revenge on rumors? duh
@MrLadyvonne *Spoiler Alerts* It's a modern bloody-revenge take on the classic and tragic story of Oedipus, through a series of events, he finds that he unknowingly killed his father and married his mother. And when learned of his crime, he blinded himself. So, yes. The end would reveal incest, but you're not seeing how wonderfully tragic the whole film plays out. You didn't experience the full film.

@ococlaire I learned to love Lady Vengeance and Oldboy equally. They're both done in their own unique way. And I have seen Thirst, actually. Doesn't hold as well as Park Chan-Wook's earlier films (in my opinion), but I thought it had a lot of good aspects that made it worth the watch.
@lolguy42 I like the gentle beauty of Lady Vengence - the scene at the end in the snow for example, was just so beautiful for me. Also I need to watch oldboy again - so many layers!!!
@BlackZepellin all the ones that want me to give a damn about their characters and story, yes. Not saying they need to be gritty or extremely realistic but this was cartoonish unrealism that just took WAY too many leaps in logic. dunno maybe I just like movies where you gotta use ur brain even if only a little.
@ManWhoWasNotThere dude enjoy the movie.. if all movie was made realistic then we wont have the right to make movies at all. one point of movies is to be different then everyday life.
Ah, and they couldn't have picked a better leading actor than Josh Brolin. Perfect for the role I say. And Bale would be perfect as a villain i think. If it all goes that way, that is.
A very disturbing movie. I have to admit I couldn't predict the ending for a very long while into the movie and when I realized what is about to happen in the end I was shocked! I think I cried but can't remember. Ultimate revenge. Shit.
The music near the end of this movie is just shivering. When Dea su opens that violet box and he turns the pages...the music that builds up for every page hits my spine everytime...even if i know the twist that will come.Such is the power of this movie. You can know beforehand what the twist is and you'll still get shocked
SPOILER ALERT- Ok just saw this film and i thought it was gr8. Im aware the ending was intentionally made 2 be ambiguous but its annoying trying 2 decide if he remembers or not. i have 2 theories
1- His smile at the end turns in2 anguish because he still remembers, and monster is the part that remains
2- he doesnt remember, and considering the fact that he was locked up for 15 years, when the girl says she loves him it overwhelms him with a joy that can be interpreted as anguish
@Xmetal2thecoreX i still think that he still remembers, but loves her daughter so much that can't break her heart. and he understands how much pain it will cause him to make her happy. but it worth this, he thinks. he WILL, make her happy.
@Xmetal2thecoreX SPOILER ALERT-no he wouldn't remember the bad secret, the monster(knows the secret, hmself) inside of him died right before he woke up after walking 70 steps. So the remaining man was the man that has never been to penthouse to discover the horrible truth. It would make a lot of sense if you think of it that way. If you still remember the plot "there is a greater punishment than death", and that is to discover that the woman you fuck is your own daughter. Worst villain ever -_-
@Xmetal2thecoreX My thoughts are that you shouldn't put spoilers for a movie in the comments of the trailer for the movie. Seriously, this is like the first port of call for people who have never seen the film before.
should i watch this film? havent seen it yet ... im a fan of requiem for a dream, american history x,the crow, from dusk till dawn, natural born killers, maybe this one is going to be right for me.
I wouldn't say Hollywood movies are bad, I'd say the rest of the whole world is catching up. Cinema now is better than its ever been, ametures can do more with less. My only complaint is there are so many good movies I have yet to see. And as an american I believe that I have high doubts that Hollywood could ever come close to the origional.
cannot believe this is getting remade, its not right, seeing a classic coming off a hollywood assembly line, worst of all, you know its going to be a by the numbers, critically swered, safely predictable piece of shit you know morons who dont like subtitles will go see and, it'll make millions and the original wont even get a mention past the actors phoning in disengenous self praise in every interview, trying to convince everybody not to see the original and compare it with the new version.
@andy085773 i would have agreed with you a few years ago when they started remaking every successful asian film, i would, but not one has been in any way good, their just cheap cash-ins, rush jobs and easy cheques for burn outs and and b listers because american studios dont think their audience will see a movie with subtitles. at least Spike Lee is making it, since he has such a great track record of consistently good filmaking, i had a better hope with Spielberg and Will 'how much?' Smith.
@andy085773 okay, i'll give you that, its just, what's wrong with the original?, why doesn't it deserve a general release?, i think its just going to be watered down, they keep mentioning 'we're sticking to the source material' because the source material is alot more family friendly and less controversial and people in middle america will 'according to this survey' be more likely to see it if they can squeeze in a pg-13 rating. sorry for ranting at you by the way.
@ItsDannyBabez what kind of logic is that? hollywood makes a lot of movies each year and most of them are shit. that is the same idea as asia makes less movies each year compared to hollywood and some of them are good. i have a friend who watches korean movies that are complete bullshit and every title starts with "my girlfriend is..." is that any better than american movies with titles that end with "...movie"? fuck no.
have a question to youtube do you guys think that the hypnotization worked, did oh dae su cry or laugh at the end because it worked or failed, btw this film rocks! :)
You don't need Denzel Washington for every dramatic film. I'm sure Jamie Foxx or even Marlon Wayans who is very underrated as a black actor, would've done just fine. So no I don't think Denzel would've done better & I don't have a clue as to why 7 Lbs wasn't a big hit.
Marlon Wayans is good for such films & true he is underrated. Jamie Foxx is good, not better though. Seven Pounds wasn't as big as it is should've been because it did no deliver emotionally. Why? Because the main character "failed" to deliver such emotions. Yeah, some people were touched, but some is not enough.
You made some real great points, I can't lie. My main point was I feel Denzel isn't the only black actor for those type of films but you're definitely right.
I'm was not a fan of the Asian cinema, until I watched "Spirited Away" which blow my mind. Then I was looking for another Asian movie that I might like & this film seems like a masterpiece.
I regret messing all these Asian movies even-though I am from Asia.
@ItsDannyBabez i personly think indie films are the best made films most of them have an original plot and is well acted and made real well like garden state, buried, monsters, and win win all movies are original
@ItsDannyBabez Although I understand where you're coming from, it was put in a way which sounds foolish. Non United States countries tend to produce films which provoke a greater deal of thought and are shown to audiences that are generally more accepting of larger themes and slower paced, visual poetry. On the other hand, Hollywood and American filmmakers are still capable of producing such high caliber material, yet the bad "Hollywood" blockbusters are accompanied with the massive advertising.
Leave this film alone!!!! Fuck you spike lee you are a terrible filmmaker! People can't just enjoy movies any more they have to show their appreciation by making a terrible fucking remake god I hate american film makers!
@dd31406 spike lee is an excellent film maker. Do the right thing is one of the greatest movies in black cinema ever created. Now why he's directing a remake of a classic asian film.. who knows?
There are only two American directors worthy of making even a decent remake to this. Christopher Nolan or Quentin Tarantino. Spike Lee isnt even a good choice at alllll. Inside Man was his last 'okay' movie. They should just abandon a remake or have Park direct it himself. (P.S I think if Jackie Chan could be serious he would be perfect for Dai Su LOL)

superb film, Min-sik Choi really deserves more recognition for his performance, would recommend the film "I Saw the Devil", another brilliant film of his :)
i was kind of dissapointed at the end, because i heard how people kept saying the twist was so amazing, but halfway through the movie i had an idea of the ending, and i got it right. i still like "exam" better
@ItsDannyBabez Will Smith doesn't have the balls to remake this movie that would true to the original and Spielberg would screw it up as bad a Lucas screwed up the last three Star Wars films....
okay first off spike lee could direct a remake of this second off he shouldn't though. also @itsdannybabez are you a really saying that Oscar movies are the only good ones seriously dude seriously? how pretentious are you? Im sorry dude but you need to broaden your horizons, because most of the Greats in Hollywood never won or even got Oscar recognition.
@ItsDannyBabez Awesome film, shitty post. If you think Asian cinema doesn't have its colossal amount of shitty films you're terribly naive. Have your preference, but don't act like Asian cinema is nigh on perfection and Hollywood struggles to produce quality, intelligent films, the claim is as absurd as it is ignorant. Hollywood is rich with them and continues to be, maybe you should look deeper than what Marvel is churning out.
this movie is amazing if you haven't seen it yet you need to now!

Thoughts?

@Xmetal2thecoreX i still think that he still remembers, but loves her daughter so much that can't break her heart. and he understands how much pain it will cause him to make her happy. but it worth this, he thinks. he WILL, make her happy.

@Xmetal2thecoreX Dude, idk.... I saw this movie a couple of years ago and I thought that he probably still remembers....
mikevaldez9 4 months ago
@Xmetal2thecoreX SPOILER ALERT-no he wouldn't remember the bad secret, the monster(knows the secret, hmself) inside of him died right before he woke up after walking 70 steps. So the remaining man was the man that has never been to penthouse to discover the horrible truth. It would make a lot of sense if you think of it that way. If you still remember the plot "there is a greater punishment than death", and that is to discover that the woman you fuck is your own daughter. Worst villain ever -_-
ItlogNaEgg 4 months ago
@Xmetal2thecoreX My thoughts are that you shouldn't put spoilers for a movie in the comments of the trailer for the movie. Seriously, this is like the first port of call for people who have never seen the film before.

@ItsDannyBabez And Anything Clint Eastwood makes, he makes good shit.
TearsOfWar1 5 months ago
cannot believe this is getting remade, its not right, seeing a classic coming off a hollywood assembly line, worst of all, you know its going to be a by the numbers, critically swered, safely predictable piece of shit you know morons who dont like subtitles will go see and, it'll make millions and the original wont even get a mention past the actors phoning in disengenous self praise in every interview, trying to convince everybody not to see the original and compare it with the new version.
cologey 5 months ago
@cologey the full cast hasnt even been mentioned yet . wait untill you see the movie before you pass judgement

@andy085773 i would have agreed with you a few years ago when they started remaking every successful asian film, i would, but not one has been in any way good, their just cheap cash-ins, rush jobs and easy cheques for burn outs and and b listers because american studios dont think their audience will see a movie with subtitles. at least Spike Lee is making it, since he has such a great track record of consistently good filmaking, i had a better hope with Spielberg and Will 'how much?' Smith.
cologey 5 months ago
@cologey on the bright side it looks like Christian Bale and Josh Brolin will be in it so I suppose thats a positve
andy085773 5 months ago
@andy085773 okay, i'll give you that, its just, what's wrong with the original?, why doesn't it deserve a general release?, i think its just going to be watered down, they keep mentioning 'we're sticking to the source material' because the source material is alot more family friendly and less controversial and people in middle america will 'according to this survey' be more likely to see it if they can squeeze in a pg-13 rating. sorry for ranting at you by the way.

@ItsDannyBabez but i don't understand the language
fieryyanks95 5 months ago
@ItsDannyBabez what kind of logic is that? hollywood makes a lot of movies each year and most of them are shit. that is the same idea as asia makes less movies each year compared to hollywood and some of them are good. i have a friend who watches korean movies that are complete bullshit and every title starts with "my girlfriend is..." is that any better than american movies with titles that end with "...movie"? fuck no.

I wish Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale, Ethan Hawke, Denzel Washington or Brad Pitt will be assigned for the remake. Not Will Smith.
Will is a great actor, but he can't do great emotional scenes with depth, his acting just can't reach deep inside of you.
If it is going to be a black actor I'll vote for Denzel within a blink of an eye.

Oh yeah?
Watch Six Degrees of Separation or The Pursuit of Happiness then come back to me..
AgentZer0oo0 5 months ago
@AgentZer0oo0
I've seen the Pursuit of Happiness. That public toilet scene was really emotional, but it would've been better if Denzel did it.
Do you know why Seven Pound wasn't a critical hit ?
Darkony 5 months ago
@Darkony
AgentZer0oo0 5 months ago
@AgentZer0oo0
Darkony 5 months ago
@Darkony
You made some real great points, I can't lie. My main point was I feel Denzel isn't the only black actor for those type of films but you're definitely right.
AgentZer0oo0 5 months ago
I'm was not a fan of the Asian cinema, until I watched "Spirited Away" which blow my mind. Then I was looking for another Asian movie that I might like & this film seems like a masterpiece.
I regret messing all these Asian movies even-though I am from Asia.

@ItsDannyBabez hmm i like european cinema too.

@ItsDannyBabez i personly think indie films are the best made films most of them have an original plot and is well acted and made real well like garden state, buried, monsters, and win win all movies are original
donny273 5 months ago
@ItsDannyBabez Although I understand where you're coming from, it was put in a way which sounds foolish. Non United States countries tend to produce films which provoke a greater deal of thought and are shown to audiences that are generally more accepting of larger themes and slower paced, visual poetry. On the other hand, Hollywood and American filmmakers are still capable of producing such high caliber material, yet the bad "Hollywood" blockbusters are accompanied with the massive advertising.

Leave this film alone!!!! Fuck you spike lee you are a terrible filmmaker! People can't just enjoy movies any more they have to show their appreciation by making a terrible fucking remake god I hate american film makers!
dd31406 5 months ago
@dd31406 spike lee is an excellent film maker. Do the right thing is one of the greatest movies in black cinema ever created. Now why he's directing a remake of a classic asian film.. who knows?

There are only two American directors worthy of making even a decent remake to this. Christopher Nolan or Quentin Tarantino. Spike Lee isnt even a good choice at alllll. Inside Man was his last 'okay' movie. They should just abandon a remake or have Park direct it himself. (P.S I think if Jackie Chan could be serious he would be perfect for Dai Su LOL)

@robhartjr123 It's not a remake technically, it is based more on the manga, so there probably won't be the Daughter as Girlfriend aspect.

@ItsDannyBabez Will Smith doesn't have the balls to remake this movie that would true to the original and Spielberg would screw it up as bad a Lucas screwed up the last three Star Wars films....
ye11owsn0w 6 months ago
okay first off spike lee could direct a remake of this second off he shouldn't though. also @itsdannybabez are you a really saying that Oscar movies are the only good ones seriously dude seriously? how pretentious are you? Im sorry dude but you need to broaden your horizons, because most of the Greats in Hollywood never won or even got Oscar recognition.

great movie.. made me question the ending :)
BanditPeng 6 months ago
@ItsDannyBabez Awesome film, shitty post. If you think Asian cinema doesn't have its colossal amount of shitty films you're terribly naive. Have your preference, but don't act like Asian cinema is nigh on perfection and Hollywood struggles to produce quality, intelligent films, the claim is as absurd as it is ignorant. Hollywood is rich with them and continues to be, maybe you should look deeper than what Marvel is churning out.

@SYST3MSHOCK I agree. Each of them has their own good and bad films.
