  • im sure their vocals are 10x better when they arent trying to sing and play erection inducing music

  • hey camera edit guy...was it necessary to change the angle every half sec? anyhoooo great song awesome band.

  • vocals are awful but all the instruments sound spot on!,

  • yeah the vocals are mediocre live, but at least the instrumentals are still solid while theyre singing.

  • oh! it's fuckin awesome oblivion performance! can't believe. it's like studio-album song.. how..weird but awesome!

  • just make Brann the lead singer from now on

  • @ShadowCrowX fuck i can't wish that because in the studio they fuckin rule

  • LMAO, they can't sing at all. There's a problem when the drummer sings better than the lead.

  • Brann sings = pretty good seeming as he's also drumming

Troy sings = has a good singing tone but no vocal skills apparently

Brent sings = forces me to leave the room

  • Love this song, but these dudes need vocal lessons. The album version is a but suspect now. Anyway love mastodon

  • bass sounding is perfect on this video

  • I don't usually listen to Mastadon, but when I do its a lifetime experience

  • Fucking awesome! Can't wait for them to write a song named skyrim

  • @dued27

lulz. you sir are a gentleman and a scholar. (maybe morrowind was an old demo?0

  • Alright let's give it up for Brann for keeping a relatively non processed drum sound compared to most metal bands today.

  • god what a great video...it sounds even better live than from the studio.

  • I really appreciate their instrumental skill, their overall sound and songwriting that makes Mastodon a cool band. What prevents them from being cool + great is the vocals, they are just not at the same level. Yes, of course, I get the tonal idea, yet it's sung wimpy and all in all not very tight. Pity, could have been so good.

  • Brann is so fucking talented. That beat is hard enough to play by it's damn self but then he has to sing while playing it.

    Fuckin' jealous...

  • they should have used sm57 on the drummer. even smaller diaphragm. epic band mastodon.

  • Yeah their artist talent is infinite, as shown by their ability to play. Vocals aren't absolutely amazing, ... Intact they make it hard to truly love the song, oh well... Still badass

  • These dudes are the evolution of metal.

  • wow hes using a vintage modern!

  • why is troy playing with a pick? i swear he uses his fingers

  • great song

  • This song makes me think about riding a horse through space :D

  • What's so awesome about mastodon is that everyone's x/vocals!

  • Why u interupt song?

  • I think given the kind of music they're playing they do very well to sing and play their instruments at the same time....they're not bad either. When I went seeing them they were very good, especially the vocals.

  • the cameraman obviously can't distinguish a bass guitar from an electric guitar. just watch the solo section.

  • @ericwilbert There are at least four cameramen here :P

  • @ericwilbert there are multiple cameramen, and they change their focus sometimes.

I imagine no one was covering Brent and he quickly panned, or he forgot that he was supposed to have been covering him during the solo.

Mastodon fuck up sometimes too, particularly on the vocals.

    :)

  • I saw them in Toronto at Heavy T.O. and they didn't do this song pretty pissed :( they can do it live so why I ask you why ????

  • They all have unique voices as well. Fucking amazing musicians.

  • i fucking love mastodon

  • The Switcher on this vid need to be shot in the face for giving brent fuck all for screen time. Way to step on a great solo asshat

  • dude the voice at the beginning freaked me out

  • I love Mastodon. I love how into the music they are. I love how you see the passion radiating from them.

  • @asbirdsdo You see it in their writing too, especially in this album.

  • None of these guys can sing all that well, but its because of that, that makes them even more of an amazing band. You can listen to a Mastodon song and when you hear the weird vocals you know immediatly that its them. You dont even have to listen to a chorus or something. You can tell by the first word they say.

  • @SlowmoLife AHAH wtf xD

they are not very good live, but they sound really good on the songs, songs like this one, search for the video clip.

  • @SlowmoLife Well studio-wise they all have great voices. but live i think troys the only one thats improved since this performance. hes great live now ^-^

  • @Mastodrummer888 I do believe brent is the best in the singing area. But it's truly all opinion.

  • They're such amazing musicians. Dailor's my favorite drummer ha. They really need an actual lead singer though.

  • @DrPerki i disagree i know there not really any good in singing but there cool the way they are and it would tottaly change there sound i think

  • @epicguitarbro You're probably right, ha.

  • this is how josh homme, james hetfield, and rasputin made a side project

  • @aditsetan and zack galifinakis

  • mastodon is really really good at everything except in the vocal department

  • So many sexual innuendos on the comments, I know it's awesome but seriously people it's not porn...

  • Where have I been all these years?!?!?!?!?

Why didn't I look up Mastodon sooner?!

GRAAAH I've been missing out! lol

  • @103964988 You haven't. This is the first amazing album they've done. The one before it was okay but they're first two only had one good track: Blood and Thunder.

  • @NOWYOURGONNABURNHOE

    FUCK NO!

What about ''I am Ahab'', ''Megalodon'', ''

Joseph Merrick'', ''Iron Tusk'' etc. in ''Leviathan'' and ''March of the Fire Ants'', ''Where Strides the Behemoth'', ''Mother Puncher'', etc. in ''Remission''.

You don't like ir, ok. But they are two killer albums, like ''Blood Mountain'' and ''Crack the Skye''

  • i think i just saw zach galifikianis in the background! :D:D:D

  • The chorus blows my mind. It's beautiful

  • Currently the best band on earth

  • @dirty30jr agreed.

  • the LP that bill is playing is gorgeous.

  • graspop!

  • I could have sworn that my pants were on when I started this video.

  • this song, album and band is fucking epic, except for the fucking bassists vocals!

  • I was watching this video to figure out the fast part of the solo. Freaking camera man fail.

  • *Mastodon, sorry typo, kinda on my iPhone!

  • I love mastadon! And that silverburst fender American deluxe p-bass is freaking sweet! I want one so badly!

  • I have say, the singing here sounds a lot better than on their new live DVD, Live at the Aragon (and a lot better than when they were on David Letterman). Apparently they can sing and play at the same time, just not consistently.

The playing of course, is spot on, as usual.

  • lmao at the singing hahaha

  • Comment removed

  • can't wait to see them in Poland!

  • Fk*** awesome!!!!

  • Hum

Can't... I can't...I can't...... They really need a singer because it sucks during live.

  • right on this song is badass love it

  • Thumbs up if this song KICKS ASS!

  • the like/unlike bar looks like a lit up joint

  • Dude this is only my 3rd time listening to these guy I forgot the bands name, now I remember.

They look so much like pros when they play I'm jealous.

  • The Chorus is so fucking huge omg

  • I love how the camera avoided Brent like the plague during the ENTIRE solo.

  • I always sing when I masturbate j/k Crack The Skye I love this fucking album

  • amazing fucking chorus

  • typing oblivion into youtube should come up with this video, not some piece of shit faggot game

  • @Morain42 Dude Oblivion is awesome. Both the song and the game, you need a better taste in games.

  • @Packers909 i dont play games man haha

  • @Packers909 true dat

  • this is way better than the letterman version. my take on it is if they're ruining their voices by the way they do death metal vocals on about half their material...how about making up melodies and singing instead and then it can all be better. problem solved.

  • @derekdeprator dude :\ there's a technique called screaming, iff you're doing it right (like all professionals should be, and Mastodon are) then it won't cause any vocal damage. It's all perfectly healthy, and does not vocal damage whatsoever.

  • @MigelMeUp folks were talking about them not singing up to par and i had an idea. that's all. but to be honest, i don't know anybody that sings like that who doesn't lose their voice really quickly. just saying. that's all.

  • @derekdeprator yeah, I'm just saying your idea doesn't work and makes no sense. That's all.

  • The real problem is that Troy's vocal cords are so wrecked by all the screaming he's been doing his entire career, and the same goes for Brent. Brann sounds fine though, considering he's drumming at the same damn time.

  • @FourthHorseman666 There's not a single thing wrong with any of the vocals in this. Any more perfect than this would be annoyingly unreal and more like the bullshit music I try to stay away from.

  • The thing i like about mastodon all the members kinda have singing Parts even the mowhawk guys does backing growls on some songs

  • 2:18!! That is a fantastic addition that, for me, makes this performance so much better than the album! I watched this video once last year, and now everytime I hear this song, I hear that addition. Every Time! I. Freaking. Love. This. BAND!

  • @ianguitarist4 i know what you mean, even when i listen to the album version i expect to hear that bit :L

  • EPIC

  • Seriously, what are you guys whining about their singing? You ever heard any other bands sing live by any chance? Just seriously.. everyone sounds a bit different when they play an instrument and sing at the same time, compared to just singing.

  • @MegaNekke Uh, I've seen plenty of bands live that are every bit as technical and/or heavy as Mastodon that don't sound like a vocal trainwreck. Watch the fucking Letterman performance and try not to cringe like I did at the fact that a BRILLIANT band like Mastodon sounds like a bunch of high schoolers at a talent show singing over a backtrack.

The bassist and the drummer NEED to get in and work with a vocal coach.

  • @uhwaykin The bassist and drummer can actually sing their own shit on key in most performances. The guitarist is the biggest trainwreck of all...I haven't heard him sing a single song off Crack the Skye live that hasn't sounded like, as you said, "a high schooler at a talent show singing over a backtrack".

  • @Raro404 Not from what I've seen. On further review, I think the drummer just goes out of key from time to time because he's got two other guys on stage who may as well be singing different songs. The bassist, however, is consistently awful in a way that I've seen before as someone who's played in bands. It's that "Oh shit, this guy actually doesn't know how to carry a note" kind of way.

Brent is also consistently bad in another way I've seen before. He doesn't know how to sing properly.

  • @uhwaykin By which I mean to say, I'm about 99% positive he's singing in a way that actually physically hurts. Which would explain why he seems to steadily drift off key the longer he sings, which can easily be corrected with some instruction.

The bassist is the real vocal problem, though.

  • MUY BUENO MASTODON!!!! ES UNO DE MIS GRUPOS FAVORITOS

  • You gotta give some credit to bill. yea he plays rhythm but thats the best and most creative rhythm I've ever heard. Those are some awesome CHORDS!!!!

  • uhh i sorry but troy what the fuck man... that sounded weak. like he was trying to push it out to hard.

  • This thread about singing is absolutely unecessary. Mustaine sings until this very day, right?

  • drum and sing? i cant even jerk off and sing

  • @dannycatastrophe

You should learn. Multitasking those two things changed my life forever.

  • @LittleJackHorror what jacking off and singing? lol just joking man

  • @dannycatastrophe I can!!! LAAAA!!! :D

  • @dannycatastrophe best comment in this f*cking community!

  • @dannycatastrophe *cough* Phil Collins

  • @donnishark Phil Collins can sing and masturbate simultaneously?

  • @HumansAreDead LOL i dont even know who phil collins is

  • @HumansAreDead No, Collins can't sing but he IS a total wanker

  • @dannycatastrophe actually drumming and singing is easier in my experience.

  • @dannycatastrophe Chuck Norris can jerk off and drum

  • @Ananth22by7 Chuck Norris also has a third fist as a chin so I'm not surprised he could jerk off and drum.

  • @dannycatastrophe Just wait till they play "Dry Bone Valley" live

  • Comment removed

  • Damn, Troy vocals made me shit all my pants D:

    What an emotional sing...

  • I'm not too big on the idea of getting a singer or anything like that, but seeing Josh Homme sing for Crack The Skye would be phenomial..

  • Instrumentaly is perfect.

  • the hangover anybody? omg.

  • damn these guys needauto tune live but mastodon is still kickass!

  • I don't get why everyone complains. The vocals are sub-par, sure, but they aren't really that bad. And the instrumentals are really what matters with Mastodon anyways.

  • Brent needs to sing his part alone

  • unique,

  • nice

  • So 3 guys sing ? That's cool refreshingly original .

  • great song but srsly. those live vocals sucks fucking ass :/

  • @whitepony1986 I admit, I'm not a huge fan of live vocals. I like the clean polished studio version better, but the song is bad ass.

  • @xxIncognitoxx the song is totally bad ass crazy fucking awsome, but this live vocals suck terribly.

  • Best Mastodon song!

  • they could of been having monitor issues, kinda hard to sing when you cant hear yourself, the letterman show was even worse than this one vocally...

  • must. go. to. the... bathroom.... but I cant!

  • No dejan de sorprenderme estos tipos...absolutamente geniales!!!!!!!

  • Yea, surprisingly Brann is the best singer and that says a lot considering that drumming and singing at the same time is really hard...especially when it's a Brann Dailor drum part.

  • holy crap i just realised Brent is plugged into a vintage modern in this vid!

  • They're so much better when you actually see them live. Let's be honest, live recordings of metal bands of any kind just don't translate well, and that's especially true for this band. Everything is different at 120 decibels.

  • Damn they plays their songs so well live... man, Ive been listening to Metallica way too much

  • to those who think mastodon needs a vocalist....watch brann play, you'll forget about the vocals :)

  • 2:43 The monster awakens

  • in the other live videos the singing is incredibly good i think they were to fucked up on letterman to remember how to sing thats why i love these guys

  • @jorgon545 well not incredible but pretty good.

  • The vocals doesnt sound as goods as in the studio version, but is not that bat anyway. Plus, give them a break, playing that ans singing? Thats aint easy at all.

  • Actually, vocals were one of the things that got me interested in Mastodon. When I played Colony of Birchmen on the Rock Band videogame, I got somewhat intrigued by the "mix" of several voices (I thought all vocals were done by the same singer and just were added one on top of the other). Though I like fast songs more than slow ones, I do like Mastodon songs because they're so fresh due its vocal style

  • i mean none of them are real singers. lol this is the first album were they have actually as you say "sung" but its so dramartic it makes up for it

  • At least we know its live performance for sure :D

  • where is brent? oh there he is

  • where is brent?

  • the drummer is a vocalist? 0_o wow thats awesome

  • realistically, their vocal harmonies were a little off. no i could not sing better and play at the same time. if i remember right, this was early in the promo stages for crack the skye so they were probably nervous, underpracticed, and in brent's case probably a little stoned (or not stoned, whichever would fuck with his mind more). the album is also pretty hard to do justice to live cuz it is so perfect

  • they all sing in a different way. and their probably nervous. im sure u couldnt sing as good as they do and play an instrument at the same time. stop hating.

  • i actually like the singing.

  • This isn't a band about singing. This is a band about great instrumentals backed up by singing.

  • lol, i think they look like gimli ! they even got some pretty good axe skills to

  • good live performance.

    I like... actually, really like....

Anyone who gotta problem wit the vocal, GFURS.

    \m/\m/ long live mastodon!!!!

  • theres a problem when brent has the best vocal performance lol

  • Well, their singing did suck just now, but since when has heavy metal of any kind been about singing?

The singing in the studio version was pretty decent, IMHO, and their musicianship is amazing, especially in a time of simple Alternative Rock riffs where clean, polished production and vocals are the main focus instead of technicality and complex musical structures.

Mastodon is a superb band. I wouldn't like it if they got a separate singer. It's not necessary. They're great the way they are.

  • @Ananth22by7 actually, black sabbath, with dio and ozzy had ALOT to do about the singing, otherwise I agree with you.

  • @Ablutophobic What you said is true. I'm a big Iron Maiden fan and of course, with a singer like Bruce, singing is one of their strong points. But of course, if a metal band doesn't have a good singer, it doesn't mean they're poor and of course, if they do have one, what more do you want?

  • @Ananth22by7 Couldn't have said it better myself.

  • Damn, This version is better than the music video.

  • maybe not a new singer but some classes wouldn't hurt...

  • @moretimetokill31 i agree.... people are Full of it, they suck at singing

  • first time i ever heard mastodon was from this video..... hooked ever since!

  • @TheBlaziken437 You realize it was an xbox 360 launch game right?

  • vocalist required,,,,URGENTLY

  • @madatak ummm yeah, STAT

  • Orchestration and vision is brilliant for song.......truly a modern gem and breath of fresh air for the genre.....kudos!

  • HAHAHAHA all I can say to all the haters out there...is that you are more than likely all jealous of these guys! They rip on their instruments and the fact that they can sing over top of the craziness of the music is amazing! And if you still need convincing, go see them live. Maybe shitting your pants after seeing them live will teach you a lesson about hating. Fuckin mooks!

  • is it just me or does the lead guitarist (cant quite seem to remember his name right now) look exactly like zach galifiniakis (aka all the fat guy from the hangover...)

    thats fuckin sweet

  • dear lord get your eyes checked you fucking ass

  • Brann Dailor gives me more orgasms than my girlfriend. Do I fail or does Brad win ? o.O

  • And, it just wasn't mixed very good.

  • Needs more Reverb and Delay.

  • They have a vocalist ....they all all the members of the current band singing. People see a problem with this? Are you serious?

  • deffinatly not one of the best live bands.... vocally anyways

  • Brann Dailor is the new Lars Urich.

Only this time... He's actually good.

  • @NightShade1218 better than lars ulrich

  • @franliberty true that
