Liping Zhang's excellent new recital disc has just been released on EMI, with arias from Donizetti, Puccini and Verdi and is a wonderful description of the wide range of roles that this artist can sing besides Cio-Cio-San. She has sung Lucia in Covent Garden and Berlin, Mimi in Covent Garden, Norway and Detroit and Gilda in Parma, where the Italians went mad for her! She is also a very fine Micaela - very fragile but with a strong heart and voice!
I saw this opera on Saturday and found it disappointing. The title roles were well-sung, but the curtain caught on the set for 3 minutes at the beginning of the second act before they could pry it loose, and none of us cared for the director's choice to have the boy wander in such an unnatural manner (and environment) after the humming chorus. Suzuki's foot fell asleep and she stumbled onstage. Zhang doesn't seem 15, and the minimalism took away options that might have suggested her role's age.
You're intelligent, you have something interesting to tell but frankly, a smile would be less distracting than your cleavage.

Rachel: put your "cue cards" in front of the camera so you're looking at the lens and not to the side-secondly- nice outfit!
