Hey everyone, Sorry I haven't answered any of the questions that were posted here. I created this account on a whim and then misplaced the username and password, which has just been found. So, I'll try and address whatever questions that have come in and I'll try and record some "worthwhile activity" on at least one of my scanners to post here. Meanwhile, happy listening.
The BCD 996XT is a 2009 model, I got the two that I have on eBay, seller is salesgal. She sells them NEW for about $469. I got one for that price and the other for $449! CAN NOT BEAT THAT PRICE ANYWHERE!
Great sound from 996s and 15s, as good or better than some transceivers. The digital scanners are worth saving for because by January 2013 ALL public services MUST switch to narrow band digital (FCC mandate), making analogue scanners capable of only hearing HAM radio, aircraft and GMRS/FRS/MURS! Make sure you get the programming soft ware! So many people get frustrated because of whats involved in managing these new units. I use the ARC Pro soft ware and its GREAT! Worth every penny!!
@80209450; It's called 2013 FCC Narrowbanding Mandate that requires all public safety & business industrial LMR systems operating in the 150-512 MHz must move to 12.5 KHz narrowband voice channels. No more 25 KHz bandwith. This is no mandate for digital mode. However, I'm considering the BCD996XT.
Hi BonziBuddys, I know what you mean, itll only make companies like Motorola MUCH richer (as in buy stock now, even if its just 1 share). Millions and millions of dollars are spent on these digital systems that often do not improve service. Yes, there are some installations that make a world of difference for the better but in many cases they dont. Meanwhile, municipalities that are broke have to spend the money to comply! Crazy.
gillmore718, I lived in Manhattan for 18 years, lots to listen to but I also had HUGE amounts of "noise/QRM" from all the bad electrical systems etc - that would affect me even on VHF and UHF, aside from all the Mid-Town pagers. just the same, LOTS to listen to. Thanks for the coment - best, Donald
Within 2/3 years EVERY public service will have to switch to Digital, itll be mandated by the FCC. Analogue ONLY scanners will be limited to Aviation, Amateur Radio, MURS, FRS, GMRS, and not much else. Whats obvious (and thereve been many posts about this on the net) the new 996XT is obviously more sensitive. It hears better than the BCT15. As for as the sound quality, its great, if I recorded closer the sounds would seem better.
I haven'thad a scanner in awhile since a Yupi 7100 & Pro-2006. The speaker sounds good in the vid of your 996t. I do not have much here that is digital, so how would you rate your BCT15 Vs 996XT? I have always seemed to prefer Radio Shack scanners but these sound good.

@Pilot135R There's another scanner thats out of the shot. You can tell since when you hear the police traffic there's nothing on the 996XT's S meter.
